Suicide Squad: General Discussion and Speculation - Part 2

A worldwide gross of three times production budget is good for almost any film. It sets a film up for a good profit against total costs after home entertainment revenue. A lot of films, even successful ones, don't get into the black from theatrical box office alone when measured against total costs. Production and marketing costs are too high for that. While some giant hits achieve significant theatrical profitability, it's not what the business model is built on these days. Home entertainment isn't an afterthought. It's an integral part of the total revenue versus total costs package.

Well if you are going to include other expenses than you should also include other revenues.

You make triple your production budget and there is no reason your movie shouldn't make money

If that's the case with these numbers, then somebody better call Del Toro and tell him that Hellboy 3 financing is imminent. Same thing with the Robocop sequel.

Immortals was NOT a success no matter how you slice it. The studios that help produce it barely broke even. Marketing costs count with the budget even if it doesn't show up officially. Add to the fact that out of those 226 million WW, about 40 million (Universal and Relatively didn't even see that full amount in return) was international revenue.

In what dimension is that 'good'?

I think people are overstating how much Ayer "hyped" this up. It's not like he took to Twitter last night posting things like:

"YOU'RE ALL GOING TO WANT TO TUNE IN TOMORROW NIGHT!"
"BIG THINGS ARE COMING!"
"YOU'RE NOT READY FOR THIS!"
"TIME TO DESTROY THE INTERNET!"

He said "Something's happening." And after months of fans speculating about Leto's hair and beard, I don't think Ayer was too out of line teasing something that, frankly, people have been wanting to know about.

Hellboy 3 isn't going to get financed because Del Torro wants a 200 million budget

Hellboy made 100 million on a 66 million budget and hellboy 2 made 160 million on an 85 million budget

How is that even remotely the same as tripling your production budget?

obviously universal didn't see the full amount in return in international revenue. they didn't see the full amount in return in the domestic revenue either.

Agreed. *****es by whylin', yo.

Hellboy II didn't gross three times its production budget. It didn't even gross twice its production budget. If it had grossed three times its production budget - $255 million rather than the $160 million it actually grossed - then a third film would probably have been financed with no problem. The first film only grossed one a half times its production budget, so it was a leap of faith for Universal to give the series a second shot in the first place, the original studio, Sony, having passed on a sequel.

As for RoboCop, a sequel is indeed possible given its level of worldwide box office relative to its budget.

That's exactly my point. Universal wasn't hoping for the minimum here, especially with other studios involved in its production.

The other studios didn't just share in the revenues. They shared in the costs, too. The fact that there were multiple studios involved doesn't really change the financial situation.

It's been a full year now. If Fox were interested in a sequel, there would be some type of movement. This is a movie studio that is seeking cash cows after all. Robocop 2 with Joel Kinnaman ain't happening. Why? Because Robocop grossed about 242 million WW on a 130-140 million dollar budget. More than half of that grossing (185 million) was made internationally.

Again, if that's 'good' then Fox executives were doing cartwheels -- odds are they didn't.

Tripling the production budget is good. 242 is not triple 100. And there are plenty of other factors that go into a sequel.

We'll see if it gets a sequel or not. Not every film that turns a good overall profit gets a sequel. If the studio thinks the gross is likely to drop with the next release then a sequel won't be forthcoming. Or there may be complications with disputes between various rights holders that hold things up. Plus if domestic box office is too weak then domestic theater owners will resist a sequel.

It kinda does. Depending on the agreement, the financial pie always shrinks. I'm pretty confident that Universal wasn't hoping for anything less than 350 million too with the marketing blitz the film had towards the last three weeks.

Nothing less than over four and a half times the production budget would do, eh?

I didn't think they would give us a Joker pic but hyping a haircut is stupid...we knew he was going to get a haircut. No need for hype

Eh, it has to do more with reading between the lines. Ayer and Leto probably tested the joker ''look'' and most likely took some pics. Something did probably happen today, we just didn't get to see it.

Lawd.

Leto is the ultimate tease. :funny:

It does kinda look like he's missing an eyebrow there.

I would totally be down with a sequence with Leto showing an average day in the life of an incarcerated Joker. Imagine what that would be like? All the prisoners giving him a wider berth. Eating alone in the mess hall with a table all to himself. Doing Jazzercise or Tai Chi alone in his cell.

Imagine if for the viral marketing there was video footage from Arkham of Joker.

Special reports from a faux Daily Planet website! Make it happen WB! That could be a hub for all sorts of marketing for the DCCU. Plus... Maybe we'd see some more of Amy. Imagine a report by Lois Lane, interviewing the Warden of Belle Reve Parrish Correctional, one Amanda Waller, covering known domestic terrorist and serial murder "The Joker" and his transfer from the Arkham Asylum For the Criminally Insane to her prison via Federal Govt. fiat?

I've suggested viral marketing of BvS by way of the Daily Planet for the last year or so. Would work with Suicide Squad as well.

That... would actually be really cool.
