I like Will Smith in general so I don't know what to tell you.

I could understand the complaint that he's not playing Floyd (even though his voice totally fits with some of his writing in the comics)

But come on Will Smith is fun and genuinely funny

This is exactly what just happened to me in my sold out theater.

I'll post my review again, since it wasn't seen before:

The critics are so, so, sooo wrong. This movie was absolutely phenomenal, and the sold out crowd in my theater was consistently engaged, responsive, and they applauded loudly at the end. They ate up every second of this. It was probably the most engaged crowd I've been a part of since TDK in 2008. And to those hating on Leto's Joker, the crowd (and I) seemed to absolutely love him too. Everything about this movie was likable and satisfying from beginning to end. I have no idea what the world is smoking, but they're entitled to their opinion... but damn, I have no clue how anyone could dislike this film. A high 9/10 for me, without question.

The good thing about the joker is he's completely insane, so it wouldn't be weird if he completely changed his characterisms for the batman solo.

Also you could technically say that in this movie its Harley that makes him the way he does. Once she's out of his life and moves on he can switch back to the old Joker (or a new one if you get what I'm saying)

I found GOTG a fun ride, but after I got it on home video, I've maybe seen it twice?

So what does this mean? Why do we not get this huge gap between critics and audience with other movies this year? What forces are at play?

Guardians of the Galaxy isn't my cup of tea. I get that it is beloved but I don't get it. I'm fine with being in the minority on that one and I hope that people continue to enjoy the GOTG films. To each their own. :yay:

How would you compare Guardians and Suicide Squad though?

I know the pacing/editing is better in GOTG. However, what about other areas?

I honestly think this is a pretty bad movie that is redeemed by a some good performances/characterizations.

The editing and music choices really were so cringe-worthy at times that I just wanted to sink into my chair. For some that might be a petty nitpick, but it really took me out of the film because it just came across as so desperately trying to create a sense of fun and edginess and it felt artificial at times. Guardians flirted with this problem, and this movie went full tilt with it. If that was the result of WB bringing in the trailer company to re-edit the film (and I suspect it was), I honestly feel bad for Ayer because it really did make the movie feel extremely uneven and I'm convinced WB's tinkering did nothing but damage the film.

Then you have the fact that story is very weak, the villain utterly lame and boring. You're really not left with much other than the characters. Thankfully Smith, Robbie, Courtney, Davis and Hernandez make it watchable.

The less said about Leto, the better.

I love GOTG, but when I see it get critical acclaim while other films are lampooned for "weak plot" "weak villains" or "poor story", it just doesn't make sense to me. So much of what has been said about Suicide Squad could be said about Guardians, yet they sit at opposite ends of the RT spectrum. Same with Deadpool.

I think it's completely overrated myself.
I did not know this about you. Sometimes I feel like I'm crazy when I talk about it because the vast majority of people love it so much.

Thats strangely how it is for me with most Marvel movies. :/

I enjoy them more than DC films at theaters. Watch DC films more at home.

Maybe this is just a case of both sides acknowledging the messiness of the technical aspects of the film, but the critics weighting that heavier (contributing to the lower score) and audiences willing to overlook it because the fun factor overwhelms it.

See the Transformers and Pirates franchise.

We're not really going to know too much until next weekend when the drop off happens.

Deadpool and Guardians have excellent pacing and editing though.

Here's my review. Be warned, spoilers below. Also, this is the first DCEU film I did not like.

I was really looking forward to Suicide Squad. Its a cool idea on paper, and you'd think it has the right ingredients to be a success. Bizarrely, this idea has been bungled in the execution.

The first major error is throwing us into the film with little introduction to these characters. The film's standout moments aren't its action sequences, but the two real character set pieces: a short conversation over drinks in the bar, and a series of dream sequences toward the end. But its too little. We needed more depth here. Too much time is based on the convoluted set-up for the villains of the piece and not enough is spent on the actual backstories of the members of Task Force X.

Harley and Joker are an absolute misfire on all counts, and it hurts to say that because I think Robbie and Leto are well cast. They are just given nothing to work with. There's no sense of the complexity of their relationship. There's no abusive lover backstory. Its reduced to something very generic, and the characters suffer for it. I need to see more of Leto's Joker to make any real judgment in that area (he's not in the film much). But his Joker lacks any real screen presence. I wanted to be wowed by him, but I felt mere ambivalence.

It feels like a whole movie is missing here. Why is Katana not given any backstory until the film is almost over? Same with El Diablo. Its an interesting backstory, but by the time we hear about it the story is done. Its like there is no third act, just a first, second, and then a final fight scene. The middle and end of the story are overly compressed. It smacks of studio interference and sloppy editing.

The visuals were great, Amanda Waller was terrific (right out of the JL animated series), I liked Enchantress and Deadshot. But they without a doubt fumbled the ball on this one, and its the weakest DCEU outing to date. A wasted opportunity that could have been something great, all but for a loss of nerve.

5/10

I can see the trailer now, Leto steps out of a shadow in a traditional dapper suit straight out of the comics and takes off his wide brim hat (think killing joke) to show us his tattoo-less forehead and grill-less smile.

Maybe he could put a spin on the famous quote

"If I'm going to have an identity, I prefer....multiple choice"

And crowd goes wild

I found it to be an adequate film, but was vastly over praised IMO.

Movie was great. I loved it, super entertaining and fun as hell. Lower your expectations and stop the complaining. A breath of fresh air the DCEU needed!

8/10

Part of me wonders if the critics were tricked or something, because I don't know what movie they watched. I'm willing to bet there is going to be a gap of 50+ between the critics score and audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

I thought it was really good, and the theater I was in seemed to feel the same.

Margot Robbie stole the show.

I'm beginning to not even enjoy MCU flicks as much in theaters, BP aside, Civil War fell flat for me.

I preferred the characters and performances in Suicide Squad and it lacked the deep smugness that GOTG had. And I preferred SS's jokes as well.
