Suicide Squad: General Discussion and Speculation - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Part 34

I just finished the novelization. DEAR LORD is it so much better. First act is completely restructured. They actually have multiple scenes developing Flagg/Moon's relationship. The original dinner scene with Amanda Waller is kept intact. Little bits of added dialogue throughout the whole thing really add a lot. There is actually a build-up to the Midway City attack. The second act is more similar to what we got in the movie, only developed far better with each action sequence progressively building and showing the teamwork developing between the Squad. Third act is mostly the same. Unfortunately they still nix most of the Joker/Harley story. But had the movie kept same structure of the novel and had the full Joker/Harley relationship fleshed out(abuse and all) this movie could have been an easy 9/10 for me(as it stands now, I have it at a 6). I love 85% of the content of the movie(liked Enchantress up until she became a CG God with a horrendous voice, and pissed they cut out the heart of the Joker/Harley story) but the technical issues of this movie are unforgivable.

I'm reading it right now and it really makes me sad, because "Suicide Squad" could've been so much better than what we got. I remember seeing the leaked footage of the Joker slapping Harley and thinking, I can't believe they're gonna do it right. So much for that. :whatever:

Well yeah, it was. Which is nonsensical because you cannot just make one movie and then after it is all done and shot try to change it into whole different movie. And you can't just edit the movie with trailer production company. And you can't just downgrade supporting performance you built marketing around to a cameo.

But WB went 'yeah, we can' :/

These are all reasons why I hate the fact that this movie is doing well in the theater. WB does not deserve to make money on this film. It should have been the line in the sand that says stop messing with these movies and making the decisions they have been.

Instead they make money and will probably believe it's okay to put out this type of product. "Who cares, it'll still make money."

Note that I do want a sequel but man they need some new creative minds on these movies.

I know people are ripping on the script, but after reading the novelization it appears the script was in MUCH better shape before they tried to twist the entire movie around in the 11th hour. The only issue for me script wise that would have still been an issue would be Enchantress, particularly during the third act. I'd like to see what the 3rd act looked like before reshoots, because right off the bat the Joker during the climax wouldn't have made sense given Harley's "I lost my puddin, but you can bring him back right?"- so clearly that was added. I'm willing to bet that Enchantress fighting the Squad ninja-style was added too, as that just doesn't make a whole lot of sense given her powers.

I don't think they are going to be "ok" with the reception its getting, not as long as Marvel is killing it critically. Not to mention, how well a movie does critically is a direct factor into how much money it makes. So while SS is doing well, it certainly could have been a lot better, just like BVS. I don't think the creative minds are the issue here. It's the studio interference. I for one love the content of the DCEU thus far, but BVS TC and SS look like they were put together by a 5 year old.

#SuicideSquad “reshoots for humor” is silly. When a studio loves your movie and asks what else you want, go for it! #ThanksWB #moreaction

It's clear the Waller dinner scene was reshot. and presumably the entire climax. I don't think Ayer is lying here, there wasn't "humor" in those parts but it seems WB did in fact go to him and basically asked him what he needed in order to make the two different cuts they had "meet in the middle"- all these reshoots did was turn it into a generic action movie

You're right, but the generic sky-beam was always going to be in the movie. I think Ayer fundamentally dropped the ball by introducing that element.

I don't mind the generic "end of the world" ghostbusters-esque finale, my problem is the execution. Even Ghostbusters was able to give a greater scope and stakes to it than is done here. Aside from that my real issue is that she is building this all powerful machine that destroying satellites and the like across the globe, but then fights the Squad with swords and her fists. One could argue that she was trying to get them on her side as opposed to killing them, but that didn't come across enough if that was the case. I think a bit more thought could have gone a long way and made a great memorable finale honestly. And they needed to ditch the weird dubbed voice and "Goddess Enchantress and God Brother"- she was creepy and cool looking as dark witch, and her brother should have had a similar primitive design. I quite liked the delivery of "let's do something fun" which ironically wasn't in the movie.

I think if had "grounded" her a bit more, and made her abilities more about smoke and mirrors, teleporting, visions etc etc than real God-like abilities it would have been very very cool. Something more along the lines of Gandalf/Saruman powers in LOTR. A lot of missed opportunities in this climax. Again, hoping to see the original ending on Blu-ray.

Are we sure about that? I know something like it showed up in the trailers, but the version I recall was a *lot* smaller.

Anyway, comparing the three movies, its really hard to pick an exact order, because the type of flaws are so different. For instance, is "showed great potential, got destroyed in editing" better or worse than "was always going to suck"?

Even though I would have preferred a more grounded villain for this, I think the supernatural Enchantress threat could have worked if executed better. There's something about seeing a group of underpowered individuals fighting something that's completely beyond their scope, it gives it an underdog feel. But it definitely could've and should've been executed better.

For what its worth though, and I'm probably the only person who thinks this, but I actually liked how Enchantress' psychedelic special effects contrasted with the dark colors of the rest of the movie.

agree on all points. As i said before I had no issues with purple vortex of doom. I just didn't like her costume change and stupid voice and weird fighting.

literally shocked how anyone could like BVS more than SS

why does it seem that alot of folks that enjoyed it preface all their reviews with "i went in with low expectations" lol.

Uh, guys, not related to SS per say but....WE'RE GETTING A FREAKING JL DARK MOVIE. DOUG LIMAN IS DIRECTING!! HOT DAMN I'M SO HAPPY!!!

Phew, ok, sorry. But yeah, this is awesome news for the DCEU and it shows that WB is not shying away from the DC's fringe properties and this train ain't stopping. Variety just reported this.

I'm not sure how to react to that. I am not familiar with JL Dark but I am familiar with Doug Liman's movies and I enjoy them

Do I have reason to be excited?

I hope that El Diablo is the villain, and they play it so that when he assumed his godly form (as he seemed to be a reincarnated Aztec fire god) at the end of the movie he regained his godly memories and with that came the brutality, cruelty and viciousness inherent in Aztec gods and culture with the JLD's only way to stop him would be to either kill him or reawaken his forgotten humanity before he can resurrect the other Aztec gods or whatever apocalyptic plan he has in mind.

Of course. I'm also glad WB moved away from Guillermo del Toro who has been on a major cold streak these last few years.

I'm just happy to see more offbeat "Suicide Squad-esque" movies coming out of DC. Variety is important, I dont want every DC film being a "superhero" film. This has the potential to explore the horror/supernatural side of the DCEU.

Although, like its title suggests, this movie has to be dark in nature so WB cant go messing with this one to make it lighter and quippier.
