Isn't the audience usually quite during trailers? I can't imagine people talking during TDKR trailer either. I assume you mean in the few seconds afterwards.

I've heard plenty of audiences laugh, cheer, gasp, etc. during trailers. Yeah...they react.

no trying to be mean but the new Spiderman will not be the first summer blockbuster after september 11. like in 2002.

My theater reacts by chattering. A little kid did excitedly call out "Spider-Man!" in my theater. I thought that was cute. As I said Spider-Man is beloved and the movie will make some change but it won't make 800mil change.

First Class fans said that it would make alot of money despite the previous efforts and it didn't. Same with Batman Begins fans. It's just the way it is with soft or hard reboots.

I don't understand that 9/11 made Spider-Man a hit thing? Spider-Made around what the first Batman and Superman movie made adjusted because he's that popular. 9/11 didn't make Spider-Man popular. It was always a lock to make well over 300mil because it was the first Spider-Man movie and it happened to be good/entertaining.

in a way spiderman deserves to underperform. when a previous director made a fantastic origin its an insult to make a new origin.

And by special/relevant you mean copying Nolan's Batman?:oldrazz: Sorry but I don't see Spider-Man pulling 800mil out of his webbing this time.

I wonder what you would be calling it if this was a pre nolan world. Probably something less derivative. It looks like the 90's cartoon. I never said it would do 800mill. But it sure as hell will wipe the floor with BB's numbers(unless it pulls a GL).

This Marvel company is making product. I'm not going to argue with that. Ofcourse these films would be better if they weren't complete product and build up to The Avengers. I've been complaining about these new Marvel films more than anyone. I liked Iron Man and Cap but thats it. Iron Man 2 was terrible, Thor was too mediocre, small and too silly for words and TIH was forgettable.
Looks like we agree once more. As much of a step up Iron man (and cap..) are, it's still mostly underwhelming in my opinion(though with these two I blame the directors more than than the studio mantra)

I loved TDK and I too miss Batman. I'm in the minority who thinks that Bale is a great actor but an uncompelling Batman/Bruce Wayne.
The funny thing is Bale has it in him to be the perfect incarnation of the character. I just think Nolan is clueless to the aspect. A five minute combination of both American Psycho and Equilibrium and we'd have gotten a lot more of a reason to watch bale/bruce than in these movies.

I love that Bale get's praise whilst Routh get's screwed, when both of their work has been equally misguided. That's the one thing I love about the marvel films, they have strong characterization.

I don't get the impression that the teaser was a big success. The movie's lone money shot is some bad CGI first person view. It was cool but it would be cooler if it didn't like s**t. They better come out with something more compelling than that.

It's a good teaser, but a bad trailer. Not sure who they were trying to impress with that cut scene though..honestly, who cares about that stuff even if it was practical. Should have had a game changing practical stunt(post bay).

No, no, they should have had him standing on top of a building in new york, a reverse shot of him putting on his mask, the wind blowing so hard he looks about as heavy as an insect. The he should have marked a crossed o his chest(cause you know America loves god). And he should have jumped, fell, done the web shooter motion but nothing comes out. end teaser...spiderman begins. loud and clear.

I'll give them a pass in light of the fact that they had the guts to show CG this early in the production. Avengers and Nolan are smarter than that.

It could be a good movie for all I know but I don't give a s**t about it because I've been there and done that. I don't care who was unhappy with Raimi's Spider-Man movies because I got what I wanted. Feel free to love and adore The Amazing Spider-Man but I'm not going to pretend that I'm interested in Spider-Man turnning into Nolan's Batman. I'm just not.

And no I'm not against another Spider-Man movie with a new cast, crew and tone but making it an origin story was a bad idea.

EDIT:

Yes we do agree on certain things.

"I see spidey" has no love for the new spiderman movie.
clever.

I've witnessed reactions during trailers for comedies that go over well. Never during strong films of the fincher ilk.

I've seen kids go nuts after Transformers trailers
and I've heard chatter after things like Watchmen.

I guess it's just the time and place I go.
For example It's dead silent during the new Mission Impossible trailer but I just assume that's the way it's supposed to be.

Star trek and TDK I think are the most successful trailer campaigns of the past few years though.

The film has to be good if they want to make enough before TDKR comes in to destroy everything in its path. The origin again doesn't help things.

My main fear for this film is to not be thinking, "I already saw this ten years ago" when I watch it in theaters. If they pull this origin off, hoepfully I won't be thinking about it. That will be difficult. Webb really has to come through with this.

I was talking to my friend's 7-year-old son a few weeks ago, and told him there was a new Spiderman movie coming out next summer. He got all excited and said "SPIDERMAN 4?!?!?!"

And I told him that no, they were basically doing Spiderman 1 all over again. He didn't understand why, and honestly, I couldn't explain why they were doing it either.

When we've reached the point where first graders are throwing their hands in the air over why Hollywood needs to remake these movies so quickly, we've got a problem.

The guy sitting behind me at Captain America this weekend nearly had heart failure at the post-credits Avengers trailer.

I've definitely seen audiences react to trailers, particularly the opening night crowds.

My favorite this summer was a little boy at X-Men First Class after the trailer for Girl With the Dragon Tattoo: "What was THAT?!?!"

He seemed perfectly fine till you decided to tell him why he shouldn't be excited for it.

I actually smiled. Very cute.
Must have caught you on good day.

That's not what I said to him.

He's been Spiderman-obsessed since he was 3, and I told him there was a new Spiderman movie coming out next year in 3D, which I thought he'd be excited about.

He said "SPIDERMAN 4?!?!?"

I said, no, it was a new Spiderman movie. It's going to be kind of like Spiderman 1 all over again. I wasn't downplaying it or anything, I was just telling him what the new Spiderman movie was going to be - I wasn't going to lie to the kid and tell him it was Spiderman 4.

I wasn't expecting him to be disappointed by that news, but he was. I even hyped the 3D part again, thinking he'd at least like that. That part didn't really work either. He kept asking why they needed to do Part 1 all over again, and I really didn't have a good answer for it because I don't really know either. And because he's 7.

Again, the only reason I mentioned it at all was because he's a Spidey-maniac and I thought he'd be excited to hear a new movie was coming.

Honestly, I have not reached that point in life where I'm telling 7-year-olds why they shouldn't like movies.

It's hard to say what type of comprehension was going down in his mind.

All I take from that is that the brand is still hella viable in name alone.
As far was the semantics. No, its not the same movie outside of some structure elements.
Major aspects have been altered.
There is no Willem Defoe(yay)
There is no Wrestling scene with Randy
There is no Goblin antagonist
There is no MJ
There is no Harry(I say these two because they haven't castanyone noteworthy)

All of those were huge huge aspects to the orignal "origin" the fact that none of them are present means this 7 year old kid might actually go in and watch something new. It would be as if Martin Scorsese made an ironman reboot and didn't include Obidiah Stane.
You might very well get the Howard Hughes Aviator film Iron man was always supposed to be.

All I'm saying is that the production deserves more than excited kids being told it's that Raimi movie all over again.

I actually agree with this. So many Marvel fans are happy with the MS films but I've felt they're more products and part of a marketing plan/business model than individual films. They all are consistently average. None are bad movies. But other than IM1, none have attempted to reach for the quality and scope of the Raimi Spideys, the Nolan Batmans, even the Burton Batmans, IMO. And IM1 was probably only so great because of Downey, Paltrow and Bridges chemistry and energy in that movie.

Though I have to say that I prefer Thor to CA. Thor is almost a comedy and not a grande epic, so I can see why some dislike it. But it was very entertaining and Branagh brought a level of fun and slyness to the proceedings as well as earnest Shakespearian angst that I found it throughly enjoyable, if disposable. CA had a much better first 2/3, but really dropped the ball and did not feel nearly as organic.

I think the trailer's biggest problem is other than a much darker tone, it really didn't look narratively any different from Raimi's SM1. Showing the Lizard and a more differentiated plot in the next trailer is an absolute. As well as better money shots, as you have said.

The '90s cartoon?

The '90s cartoon was pretty light and happy-go-lucky (much like the character) focused on romantic melodrama and colorful villains. it honestly made Raimi's vision (sans dancing in SM3) look dark.

I must be alone in thinking Bale is excellent as Batman beyond the silly voice. He captures Bruce's journey as an epic one of self-sacrifice. I also like his animalistic Batman in movements and stares....but that voice.

And Bale gets the "pass" because he is very charismatic whether you like his interpretation or not, he is interesting to watch. Routh? Well he seems like a nice guy.

No, no, they should have had him standing on top of a building in new york, a reverse shot of him putting on his mask, the wind blowing so hard he looks about as heavy as an insect. I think that was designed specifically for the trailer...it's just the CGI is still not ready.

It's still a remake of SM1's origin, no matter how different it is. The Woflman remake was very different from the original last year, but it was still a remake.

Also "No MJ" isn't that big a deal when they are using the same "one love interest who is his childhood crush/girl next door" archetype again in this movie.

You're right. I should have pointed all of these things out to the 7-year-old who was only on the phone to read me the Star Wars Mad Libs I got him for his birthday. What was I thinking?

But DACrowe, you don't get it, Webb is doing his origin movie, it'll be different from Raimi's origin because we all know if nothing else Raimi really screwed that up.

Must have just been the impression I got when I was a kid. Parker was a very smart science kid(enough for hank mckoy to notice) building webshooters and discovering the truth behind his parents, while Aunt may plays a larger role to his development. His girl friends have apparent tragic ends and he has genuine passion during his battles when he's not quipping(especially where the goblin is concerned. The Brundle like transformation from man to spider...

I think the roboot will be more like the 90's whereas I guess Raimi was looking at the 60's version.

Never said anything about pointing any of that out. Just said it deserves more than us running around telling kids they've (amost literally) seen it before

And that's still not what I told him.

Hell, I told him about it because I figured he'd be excited about it. I wasn't expecting that response. And I wasn't going to get into some detailed explanation that would have gone over his head anyway. Have I mentioned that he's only 7?

If it's the word remake that scares you so much, why not apply it to the likes of Startrek, and Batman...perhaps even Lord of the Rings...parhaps even Xmen First Class.

Remake can mean a lot of things, I wouldn't be so quick to write it off.

Also "No MJ" isn't that big a deal when they are using the same "one love interest who is his childhood crush/girl next door" archetype again in this movie.

I think it's a big enough deal when she's a science geek and not a model or whatever the hell she was in Raimi's world. I think it's different when she knows his secret. When he and her dad are pretty much at high level odds.

And how do you know it's a childhood crush next door?

CAPTAIN AMERICA was #1 on Monday earning $7.8 mil. Total for Marvel's latest is nearly $73 mil.
