It made more than Thor on Monday I have a feeling it will finish second to Pirates this weekend I guess some women like pee and fart jokes

Actually The Hangover still costs more to make bnly a few million.

It was never to supposed to uproot Thor and I don't think that was ever the goal. It made nearly twice as much as expected and many women did see this movie. I have no idea where you're getting your information from.

Bridesmaids is a smash. No denying that.

Hangover budget was 35 million. The marketing budget was 40 million. = 75 million total. It made 277 domestic with a RT score of 79%. It was a smash hit.

Bridesmaids budget was 33 million. The marketing budget was likely the same or above at 40-50 million (no concrete number has been released but it had damn commercials every other break) = 73-83 million total. It will likely make 50-60ish million domestic with a RT score of 89%. It will make a profit.

So what is the difference? Why will this movie make 1/4 of what Hangover did? Is it because it is geared towards women? I didn't know it wasn't supposed to uproot Thor. HENCE MY SURPRISE:wow: I thought it would do a lot better with all the marketing and it being labeled by the marketing team as the Hangover for women. I am getting my information from the box office results. There are more women in this country than men. So why did it not even remotely capture the same foot hold that Hangover did? The movie is obviously pretty good with such high RT and Metacritic scores. So it's not the quality. It was a new movie opening with a terrible movie, Priest. So it's not that it had tough competition. So why didn't it do better? You can say it wasn't predicted to do that well...ok so why is that? Why was it only predicted to make 18 million opening weekend? If I say that I guess women don't like pee and fart jokes as much as men do, how can you refute that? How can you say I am wrong and that tons of women went to see this when the movie won't even do 1/4 of what the movie it is trying to emulate did, which was geared towards men?

Bridesmaids has done good. It is by no means a failure. It will make a good profit. It isn't a smash hit like Hangover was but it will do good. I just thought it would do better by their advertising campaign and reviews of the movie. The only thing I can think of is that men didn't go see it because it was geared towards women and a lot of women didn't go see it because they don't enjoy pee and fart jokes as much as men do. I think that is an apt observation.

It is but some are trying to undermine its success for some reason

Nobody is undermining its success. If you say you thought a movie would do better that doesn't equal someone saying the movie sucks and it's a bomb:dry:

honestly i don't know why you think bridesmaids will only finish with 60m...i think the rule of thumb should be to wait and see how weekend 2 goes before blindly following the numbers game...you can do the math all you want but there's no way to put a number on word of mouth. i've seen the movie and it was leaps and bounds funnier than anything i've seen in a long time. is it gonna do hangover numbers? no...but i think it has the potential to make 100m+ with the kind of positive reactions it is getting. Because its really that good.

Too soon to give it that label. However, I do think it's going to end up being the preferred comedy this summer; yes, including The Hangover Part II.

Why do I think that the new Kevin James movie is going to be number one on its opening weekend?

Because he's one of the current comedy stars on film right now (Sandler, Ferrell, Carrel and him), and audiences genuinely like the guy.

That's right, and he was popular from his sitcom too.

Brides Maids is doing better than I thought it would, I wouldn't be surprised if it were another leggy comedy hit like Wedding Crashers, Theres Something About Mary and The Hangover.

There's a Kevin James movie out this week?

...

People who think that BM didn't do well no nothing about how the boxoffice works. It was never expected to be number one over the weekend and do to the fact that it's staring Women it was never going to have a Hangover style opening weekend.

Now it is to soon to call it a smash (over 100mil would be fantastic) but it's not to early to lable it a hit.

Let's take the marketing budget out of this, because we don't have a certain number, and I doubt that the marketing budget was that high for a comedy like this.

It was supposed to be a more low key movie than the Hangover and it's marketing. I doubt the studios would sell a movie with rated-R female comedy with a mostly female cast full of tv stars with a $40 million marketing budget.

And let's take the RT score out of expectations, because when this film was budgeted no one says "This film will get high reviews so it can do better than a big budget superhero film", even if it's in it's second week.

Bridesmaids exceeded expectations and that's an understatement within itself. I know you may not be, but like Zant said, it feels like you're trying to undermine the success of this film. No one though this film would make over $20 million OW. Most people thought though it would make around $12-15 million. I don't know why you think this film would beat Thor, and it would also should have made more.

This.

And calling it a film of just pee and fart jokes undermines the film a bit (not aimed at you Zant). It was deeper than that.

Aimed at me! It was raunchy and profane. It relied on shock comedy...like the Hangover. It relied on pee and fart jokes. Yes it has a redeeming/meaninful message towards the end and that makes it deeper but it was marketed to be a raunchy comedy with pee and fart jokes. **** all the trailers have fart jokes in it. Even Superbad has a meaningful/deep meaning in the third act but that movie relied solely on raunchy and profane sex jokes and that was how it was marketed. Both good movies but come on...you don't go see these movies because they have a deep meaning hidden between lines that pops out at the end. You go see these movies to laugh your ass off. If you have beef with the movie being labeled the female Hangover or a raunchy female movie with pee and fart jokes then take that up with their marketing department.

Well, if you wanted it aimed at you I guess it is.....

I'm saying that it was more than that because it is clearly that. And of course it was marketed as such and yes you go to laugh your ass off to it, but that doesn't get rid of the underlying subtext of each film. There is a clear difference between movies like Bridesmaids/Hangover and movies like Grownups/Paul Blart. The latter fails to attract people on more than a superficial level and other films does. It has nothing to box office and marketing.

I have no problem the movie being marketed as such (that route makes you the most money), but I say it was more than.

I didn't find Hangover to be very funny so the comparasion to BM isn't exactly thrilling me. Then again I didn't want to see it in the first place, I was just commenting on it's boxoffice.
