Goku was based off of a Chinese legend (wherein his name is pronounced "Wu Kon," btw), but that doesn't mean Goku gets to claim to be thousands of years old. By the same logic I could claim that Wonder Woman was based off of ancient Greek mythology so she predates western civilization.

Toriyama-san designed the character and the world in the 80s, and that's how long the character has been around.
