'Super Max' - Goyer's new DC film project - Part 1

Forget the Flash, this might be the perfect film project for David Goyer. From Wizard Magazine:

Maybe it was giving up the gig writing and directing “The Flash” for Warner Bros., but it seems like David Goyer’s a little bit more into villains these days.

Just weeks after he and Warners envisioned very different takes on the Flash, Goyer sold the studio on an idea that focused on the more villainous side of the DC Universe.

“Super Max” is Goyer’s take on supervillain incarceration in the DCU. Revolving around a wrongly convicted Green Arrow being whisked away to the super max prison for out-of-control heroes and villains (where he's forced to face a number of inmates he put there), Goyer says the flick—which he’s developing with writer Justin Marx—isn’t just a Green Arrow film.

“He’s Green Arrow for the first 10 minutes of the movie, and then he’s arrested and his secret identity is revealed,” says Goyer, who also has plans to do a graphic novel or miniseries that would tie in to the possible film. “They shave his goatee and they take his costume and send him to prison for life, and he has to escape. It’s like ‘Alcatraz,’ and he has to team up with, in some cases, some of the very same villains he is responsible for incarcerating in order to get out and clear his name. Of course, tons of people try to kill him while he’s in there. We’ve populated the prison with all sorts of B and C villains from the DC Universe. For the fans, there will be all sorts of characters the hardcore comic book junkies will know, but they’re all going to be there under their human names and no one is wearing a costume, but there will be a lot of characters with powers and things like that.”

Just imagine - one of the most right-winged, aggressive DC characters in prison. And imagine the possible villains - Deadshot, Deathstroke (all of whom have to work together). I have to admit this is a very good suggestion...

To be honest, origin movies have been done to death. Batman needed one, whereas Green Arrow doesn't (Smallville and JLU gave fans basic background knowledge...)

As opposed to someone like Hawkgirl. Who's both right and left wing.

^ Lol. But, yah, Green Arrow was always hardcore left wing. Smallville even tried to nail that point across.

With the talk of past DC film scripts may being looked at for a future DC animated film...Super Max should really be considered.

Which is a good thing, because the script was pretty lousy.

It would be a great season of Arrow, I think. Supermax the first half, Suicide Squad the second half. I'd love that.

My only thing is...green arrow isn't super powered. Why would he require a specialized prison that's built for the likes of icicle (who's been mentioned as being in the script).

He was basically sent to Super Max so he could be "taken care of", as I recall. He was more or less in a prison full of assassins.

Man, Super Max should be made by DC Animation. It is such an interesting concept. I remember being excited when the notion of it being made was announced all those years ago. Of course, I heard the screenplay is s***. But the concept is still interesting.

Even so, you just match Goyer up with a good director and they could take the idea and polish it up. Goyer generally shines when he has a strong director pointing him in the right direction.

I don't know what 'Supermax" is but it sounds disappointing.

I would have but they basically turned the island he washes up on into a penal colony. So no reason really to do a Supermax season.

Think of a concept like Batman: Arkham Asylum but with Green Arrow instead. Basically one superhero trapped in a prison with a ton of supervillains trying to survive with limited resources and with his wits.

I liked the "script" (really it was more a story layout), or at least the broad strokes of it.

I can't believe Goyer is actually on board with it now, though. This is a pretty big deal for the writer of that script.

Why exactly was the super-max concept thought up for green arrow really? or vice-versa i suppose? A super-hero known mostly for his bow and arrow gimmick that he would most likely not have in that prison.

I'm not sure why anyone felt GA was the right DC hero for the super-max concept in the first place?

the concept for Super Max sounds cool, but on film i think it would work best as a sequel after already having established Green Arrow in the 1st film

I like to think there is more to Green Arrow than just his arrows and the color green. Ollie is a 3-dimensional character

Yeah I'd agree with that

Goyer is one of writers who has some terrific ideas, but is prone to writing what I call "popcorn" dialogue; the overabundance of it has amplified my growing dislike of Batman Begins. Now, I am far from being a Tom Stoppard, but, I hope someone would slap if I wrote something as cringe-worthy as "Gotta get me one of those."
