Superhero Cinematic Civil War - Part 57

Letitia Wright is ultra Christian and oddly enough some of those folks seem to really be into conspiracy theory stuff.

Governments have historically carried out experiments on the general population in the past.

During the Cold War, the British Government used the general public as unwitting biological and chemical warfare guinea pigs. British military aircraft dropped thousands of kilos of a chemical of ‘largely unknown toxic potential’ on British civilian populations in and around Salisbury in Wiltshire, Cardington in Bedfordshire and Norwich in Norfolk.

Well, I guess she's making Marvel's decision about whether to make Shuri the face of the franchise or to recast T'challa easier now.

They made the decision months ago. BP2 starts shooting in July, meaning that the script is done and they're beginning pre-production soon.

Being uncritical or fanatical in your belief in anything (not just religion) will make more inclined to believe things that conform to your preconceived views, no matter how absurd they might be.

This is how the MAGA cult are able to delude themselves into believing that there was some grand, Biden-Soros-Chinese-Venezuelan plot to stuff the ballot boxes with millions of fake votes and steal the election.

Not to mention the Soviets carrying out nuclear tests inside their own country, thereby exposing their own people to the deadly consequences of nuclear fallout. Northern Kazakhstan, where most of the tests were carried out, still has unusually high rates of cancer and genetic deformities as a result.

People will shame her but the US government has used people or more specifically black people as guinea pigs before. I can understand the skepticism
Uh... it isn’t just that she’s a anti-vaxxer. She also seems to be transphobic as well. That same video included anti-trans propaganda.

And as a black person myself, I certainly understand the historical distrust of vaccines in the community, but it doesn’t excuse her using her platform irresponsibly to disseminate misinformation about a vaccine that can save lives. Or transphobia. I’ve lost a lot of respect for her because of this, and if she really takes over the BP mantle for the sequel, I don’t know if I can stomach watching her in it.

Totally agree. In these times perhaps more than any other, it is crucial to have evidence to support our claims. Otherwise you will end up going down the rabbit hole of conspiracism and never being seen again.

Until we have evidence that the Covid vaccine is dangerous and is being used in a cruel experiment against POC, we should not make such allegations.

Daredevil season 3 episodes 3-4.....

@kguillou it's hard to believe that after the stuff that happened here the show can get even better, but I'll bite. My one issue is
Why does Kingpin have access to prison surveillance? He's under house arrest, strictly supervised, and there isn't much reason for the FBI officers keeping guard on him to keep an eye on what happens in the prison he was moved out of temporarily.. is there?

Aside from that; 9.5 or 10 out of 10, for both episodes.

Oh it does get better my friend. Season 3 just takes things to another level. Again, episode 6. Just wait. Hot damn.

He’s the Kingpin dude, dont think too much about it. Thats what the Kingpin does. He’s got his hands in everything and controls everything—thats why he's such a formidable threat.

Yeah, if it was just being anti-vax, it would be one thing. Just an anti-vax video, I doubt there would be much of an uproar. That the video also has transphobic and antisemitic content is where the big problem lies.

And while Black Panther 2 stuff may have been decided, never underestimate a studio to force massive last minute changes.

I've always thought Danai Gurira's Okoye was better suited to take on the Black Panther mantle anyway. We've seen the King and BP role split when T'Chaka was on the throne and T'Challa was running around in the cat suit, so putting the suit on Okoye and the crown on Suri seems like the right call.

Okoye would be damn scary as Black Panther.
I’d love to see her take it on.

That would have to alter Wakandan lore/culture though since, unlike the office of king, the mantle of the Black Panther is something specific to the Panther Tribe, and Okoye is of the Border Tribe.

Why can’t we all make this easier and just recast T’Challa? RIP to Chadwick Boseman but I’ve yet to hear a convincing argument for why they shouldn’t recast other than “Chadwick is irreplaceable.” However, there’s plenty of young talented black actors who would honor Boseman’s work on the role but make it their own. They wouldn’t be ‘replacing’ him in the sense of trying to emulate what he did; more adding on to the legacy that Chadwick was involved in.

There’s no need to have Shuri or someone else take on the mantle and kill off the T’Challa character. Besides, T’Challa already died in Infinity War. Why kill the character off again(this time on-screen) to adjust for a real-life tragedy? T’Challa’s character deserves to continue, imo. His story isn’t over yet. Not by a long shot, imo. Marvel would make a fatal mistake in not continuing the character’s story in the sequels. The show must go on. T’Challa must go on. We have to continue his story.

It's not just that video, either. One of the other recent ones features the same guy asking his brother why he's single and his brother responds by blaming "independent woman culture".

I become more convinced of the simulation theory every year.

Because Black Panther, and T'challa in particular, was an important cultural milestone. You just need to see the reaction to Boseman's death to see it. There is no easy answer. And as a white man, my opinion does not matter.

And as black man, I think it’s important for a character like T’Challa to continue. I fully understand that the idea of replacing Boseman remains a touchy subject. Believe me, I know that no matter what decision they make it’ll be controversial, but the reality is, and I hope I’m not being insensitive when I say this - the character was always bigger than Boseman. Boseman brilliantly portrayed a character that meant the world to millions of people, especially people who look like me. Marginalized communities needs more heroes to represent us. To embody us. To empower us. If you kill T’Challa off-screen after his triumphant return in the highest grossing movie of all time then what does that say? I think it’d be disappointing to many millions who loved character that you just killed him off.

Like James Bond (and pretty much any superhero) T’ Challa is a larger-than-life character who is larger than the life of any actor who plays him. While Boseman can never truly be replaced, his legacy can be honored. And I want the next actor to play T’Challa to do that by playing him the best way he can, and keep the character alive. Yes, I’m aware if Marvel recasts then there likely will be backlash, I’m sure, but people will largely accept it over time but I highly doubt there’s going to be a boycott over the new actor cast in the role. People will have their opinions but they’ll largely be understanding and just be happy that the series can continue. T’Challa’s story just can’t end with one actor life passing... it just can’t, imo. He’s a character that has to continue. We should get to see more adventures.

Remember Boseman’s line in Civil War? “In my culture, death is not the end.” In the context of the film, T’Challa is saying that his father is not truly gone but since Boseman’s unfortunate passing, I found new meaning in that line. Now, for me, that line touches on the inherent mythic power of characters like him that transcends life. He’s a symbol that cannot die and we must not let death be the end of T’Challa.

I’m black. You can have an opinion. The issue is knowing when and when not to voice it without adding that caveat. I don’t think this is one of those times, but that’s ultimately up to you.

Episode 6 is pretty cool, but it's the last 15 minutes that really make that episode for me. Episodes 3-5 are easily more engaging to me, but this could change positively in favor of this episode in future viewings of this season.

:yay:

I don't think they should recast T'Challa but ask me again tomorrow and I might have a different take. I can be convinced of either frankly.

I really don't know. Either way, I trust Cogler and co.

Same here. I don’t think there is a definitive right answer. People have different preferences which is fine. For me as long as it’s handled respectfully (which I am totally sure it will be), I will be happy whatever route they take.

If the pandemic leads to theaters dying, then Joker would literally be the last comic book movie ever to reach a billion dollars. And I don’t know how to feel about that...
