DC Films Swamp Thing

Something tells me that it was Swamp Thing.

I think it's more likely he's referring to the Authority. He said a similar statement a few months back when asked about it. It's the only movie that didn't have a director or writer attached.

Swamp Thing sinks further into the deep. Admittedly, this doesn't mean that Swamp Thing is on the backburner for Mangold or DC Studios, but it doesn't raise its prospects, either. Such is par for the course when it comes to Swamp Thing.

Paramount Signs Filmmaker James Mangold To Overall Deal

Paramount Pictures has just inked an overall deal with five-time Oscar-nominated filmmaker James Mangold, under which the Logan and Ford v. Ferrari filmmaker will develop, direct and produce feature film projects for the Skydance owned studio.

The deal comes in the wake of the new Paramount announcing its first big project under Studio Co-Chairs Josh Greenstein and Dana Goldberg on day one, that being Mangold’s reteam with Timothée Chalamet, High Side. Paramount won that project in a highly competitive bidding war.

Said Paramount Pictures Co-Chairs Josh Greenstein and Dana Goldberg, “James Mangold is one of the most talented filmmakers working today and we could not be more excited to welcome him to the Paramount family, starting with High Side and many more collaborations to come.”

This doesn't affect Swamp Thing or his Star Wars movie whatsoever.
It's not exclusive. He's free to work on prior projects with other studios, if he has prior projects that didn't have a distributor he can go to Paramount with those, new projects he has (or his production company gets) will be at Paramount.

As simple as that.

You're right. I'm sure his Star Wars project will come out as soon as Rian Johnson finishes writing his Star Wars trilogy. Let's not pretend that Swamp Thing will still be part of that first DCU slate, especially if Gunn has other ideas. After all, Man of Tomorrow wasn't part of that original announcement, and sure, plans change, but now that's happening soon.

Even if the film never gets made, it certainly won't be because of this deal, just as Tom Cruise's deal with Warner Bros. wouldn't prevent a possible Top Gun sequel.

That's not how these things work.
It's an overall deal, not exclusivity.
