Taika Waititi’ - “Jojo Rabbit”

I somehow forgot Rockwell is in this. :wowe:

Anyway, looking good. A bit of a Monty Python vibe to it.
I'm so excited to see Rockwell in an insane role like this again, it's what he does best.

I had forgotten Alfie Allen was in it, and was very pleasently surprised to be reminded. Good to see him getting parts in stuff like this, after finally getting a conciliatory Emmy Nom this year.

Geez it feels like so long since we saw a film like this. Hopefully it’s the most successful indie in ages and revitalises the indie circuit
Wasn't Get Out an indie flick? That did pretty well for itself. :D

If Scarjo can refrain from talking about playing Mulan and Pocahontas in future movies, she will be nominated for her first Oscar for this.

:o

Knowing how savy RR is, marketing wise, he probably loves this... :D

JOJO RABBIT | Fantastic Fest
FULL DESCRIPTION

It is simply impossible to think about Taika Waititi without recognizing that his heart is so big it could likely power at least a dozen humans. Throughout his films — from EAGLE VS SHARK to BOY to WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS to HUNT FOR THE WILDERPEOPLE and even to a Marvel property like THOR: RAGNAROK — it is apparent that his affection for his stories and his characters has no boundaries. That affection is also insanely infectious, as we also come to love these stories, the worlds he builds, and the people who fill them. His optimism and sense of wonder give us a ray of hope when we desperately need it.

Hope in the darkest time is a nice segue into talking about his latest film: a WWII/Holocaust satire. The Third Reich and comedy are two things that have rarely gone together in entertainment. Chaplin’s THE GREAT DICTATOR is a classic because he was willing to juxtapose war and humor to advocate that the US join the effort to stop German fascism and its relocation and murder of Europe’s Jews. Mel Brooks’ THE PRODUCERS is a perfect comedy in every way, but Brooks was less concerned with making a political statement than making a cinematic one: comedy should be limitless.

Considering the importance of the historical precedents and the endearing heart of Waititi’s films, it’s no surprise that JOJO RABBIT is an instant and important classic. It’s brilliant and hilarious, with an incredible amount of benevolence at its center. He’s not pulling his punches — the humor in JOJO shows the darkest aspects of humanity, but that darkness is needed in this film. The heart, compassion, and charity that fill all of Taika’s films serve as the ultimate counterpoint to that darkness. And friends, fear not: JOJO RABBIT has both a wealth of heart and a great deal of laughs. It’s a special film from a special filmmaker and it exemplifies all the things that make us want to share movies with the Fantastic Fest audience. (JAMES EMANUEL SHAPIRO)

Taika Waititi To Receive Toronto Film Festival Ebert Director Award – Deadline

Taika Waititi is to receive the Toronto Film Festival’s (September 5–15) Ebert Director Award at this year’s inaugural TIFF Tribute Gala awards event.

The award recognizes and honors a filmmaker for their outstanding contribution to cinema. Taking place on Monday, September 9 at Fairmont Royal York, during the festival, the Gala is an annual fundraiser to support TIFF’s year-round programs.

The award is an evolution of the organization’s former Roger Ebert Golden Thumb Award, which celebrated a filmmaker who reflected renowned film critic Roger Ebert’s passion for cinema. Past recipients include Claire Denis, Martin Scorsese, Ava DuVernay, Agnès Varda, and Wim Wenders.
“Taika Waititi is one of the most innovative, bold, and exciting filmmakers working in the industry right now,” said Joana Vicente, TIFF Co-Head. “TIFF is thrilled to honour his extraordinary talent with the inaugural TIFF Ebert Director Award.”

“Taika Waititi is the rock star cinema needs right now,” added fellow Co-Head Cameron Bailey. “His films are full of razor-sharp humour, faultless style, and boundless generosity. Somehow he manages to stuff both indie hits and massive crowd-pleasers with big, radical ideas. We’re thrilled to be premiering his latest, Jojo Rabbit, at the festival and to hand over the inaugural TIFF Tribute Award for direction to this 21st-century master.”

Disney Executive Fears Taika Waititi’s Nazi Satire ‘Jojo Rabbit’ Is Too Edgy For Studio Image — Report – IndieWire

According to Variety, the Nazi subject matter at the heart of “Jojo Rabbit” is worrying some Disney executives. Variety’s report reads: “The scathing takedown of Nazism may, however, prove a little too edgy for Disney brass accustomed to producing movies suitable for parents and kids. Searchlight has started to screen the film for its new parent company. Halfway through one recent viewing one executive grew audibly uncomfortable, worrying aloud that the material would alienate Disney fans.”

Who exactly are those "Disney fans", and why do those execs believe they are the main target of this movie?

Well, Disney, maybe you should've thought of that when you bought the studio that you know doesn't make family-friendly films all the time.

It's not a safe concept that's for sure. It's not meant to be either. It's an FSL project so that should also be taken into consideration. Disney should just let the movie play out and do not interfere with FSL's successful approach of making award winning movies. Trust them to deliver an interesting, unique and relevant product.

The several screenings responses relating to the movie's quality have been overwhelming positive. I don't wanna see the movie being tinkered with, in any shape or form... Also the FSL execs had this to say back in 2018:
“We believe in Taika as a filmmaker, and we felt like this was a movie where we can make it on our scale and the right way . . . He doesn’t have to sand off the edges, doesn’t have to change the humor,”
“We hope that any company will value what we do,” Greenfield said of the potential deal. “We feel like the filmmakers we work with . . . [could] then go on to make big movies for the main division.”
Can the Scrappy Fox Searchlight Execs Who Green-Lit The Shape of Water Survive Inside Disney?

“Jojo Rabbit” (October 18)

After directing the Marvel blockbuster “Thor: Ragnarok” to the tune of $854 million worldwide, Taika Waititi is returning to his indie roots this fall with “Jojo Rabbit.” Billed by distributor Fox Searchlight Pictures as an “anti-hate satire,” Waititi’s latest is set in Nazi Germany and follows a young boy (newcomer Roman Griffin Davis, destined for breakout status) whose nationalism is challenged after his mother (Scarlett Johansson) agrees to hide a young Jewish woman (Thomasin McKenzie) in their home. Waititi has stirred up headlines for portraying an imaginary Adolf Hitler in the movie, but it’s his bold visual style and idiosyncratic humor that will most likely leave people talking. —ZS

If “Disney fans” think this is a film for parents and kids, they’re probably just as dumb as that exec sounds.

Unless he's planning on having JoJo merch and cast members dressed as Hitler interacting with Snow White and Micky Mouse at Disneyland I'm not sure what this idiot executive is on about.

Well from the reports it was only 1 Disney exec who ''audibly grew uncomfortable with the content of the movie at a screening''. So it is a hyperbole to suggest this was a consesus opinion from the Disney execs as a whole.

Nevertheless, it is concerning that this is the mindset of some execs. Hopefully this isn't common otherwise we will not be getting any adult-orientated movies with edgier subject matters like confronting Nazism (cough, Magnetos origin)

The MCU Magneto will be a colonizer who tried to invade Wakanda instead.

Definitely sounds like it could be a case of the media blowing things out of proportion and film social media sphere overreacting as well. That never happens :D

^^^ THIS. They played all this lip service about staying committed to quality art. I hope the majority opinion will keep the hands of idiots like this off of FSL. But it is worrisome for mainline projects like X-Men.

Not sure why it's worrisome for X-Men after some of the worst X-Men movies of all time.
