Shortly after Disney's planned acquisition of most of 21st Century Fox was announced, Johansson was at a dinner for Disney board members with some of her Avengers castmates and Disney executives. "The Disney execs were saying, 'We're excited about Jojo.' They had just acquired it," she says. "I said, 'How is that going to be?' Because Searchlight's made quite a lot of subversive films. It's harder and harder to try to find a home for something that's more off-color or subversive and push the limit. I thought, 'There's no way Disney would bring [Jojo Rabbit] out. ... This doesn't belong to that [Disney] family.' " Johansson's tablemates reassured her, she says, pointing out, "Whether it's Pixar or Marvel, the most important thing is when Disney acquires a company that's working, they let the studio continue to have their own style. The creative freedom of that studio stays, the DNA of the studio stays intact. Ultimately when Jojo Rabbit went over [to Disney], it didn't make any difference, which was cool. Because I was worried that maybe it would." In fact, Disney is so bullish on Jojo Rabbit that CEO Bob Iger will host a private screening of the film as part of its Oscar campaign in a show of his support for Fox Searchlight.
Someone pointed out that he and his best friend look like a time-lost childhood Simon Pegg and Nick Frost and now I can't unsee it.JoJo's actor really does look like he could be the son of of Scarlett Johansson
The thing its, it Waititi. It being polarizing with critics makes so little sense if it is his usual quality. Still not a lot of reviews out there, but I am definitely curious now. Especially as it seems the issue are that it is rather tame. It's a polarizing movie. Some critics hate it and others love it.
The audience response from the screenings has been very positive though.
The issue for the most part seems to be the satirizing of somes aspects of WW2 stuff, nazis, Hitler... and in the way it was done. Some critics simply could not cope with that. Some didn't even entertain the idea of giving this movie a chance. I saw negative comparisons say this was "as bad as Life is Beautiful"... a movie that i actually love. The thing its, it Waititi. See, I am not seeing that. I am seeing that the satire is missing bite, while the third act turns very sentiment, very typical. The issue for the most part seems to be the satirizing of somes aspects of WW2 stuff, nazis, Hitler... and in the way it was done. There are a ton of fresh reviews, much more than rotten, that haven't been added yet... So plenty of critics liked/loved the movie. The audience from the screenings at Toronto Film Festival gave a strong positive response too.
It's Taika and i trust him to deliver something great. I'll be there for this opening weekend and judge it for myself.

That early rating was conditioned by the small number of reviews. Yep the RT for this has increased considerably. 74 now and quite a lot of great reviews. Rising from the aches like a Phoenix. The Tomatometer went up quite a bit from the last time I looked at it. It was rotten, now fresh at 72%. That seems more like where I thought it would be, I was surprised to see it rotten after the initial TIFF reactions.
