Comics The '07 X-Event: Endangered Species, Messiah Complex, & Disassembled

Yep, always have. Even through that Morrison stuff. Excited for the future though, I am so glad Carey is out there looking out for our muties.

I support only X-Books with Rogue in it.

...oh, ****ake, wait. I meant, only X-Books with Rogue and Gambit in it.

Or that new blue-haired electric chick in New Mutants. Me like her too.

^I support any team with an X on it. Gotta love the excitment this big summer event is stirring up.

Take a guided tour of the 'X-Men' #200 cover with writer Mike Carey
And editor Andy Schmidt.
They say a picture's worth a thousand words, but when you get the people behind the current X-Men books talking, one picture's worth far moreespecially one so beautifully drawn by David Finch. "Celebrating the 200th issue of X-Men with a variant cover was a no-brainer for X-Editor Andy Schmidt, and Finch proved the popular choice around the office to draw every member of the X-Men from past and present, both living and dead. I decided to celebrate the 200 issues like the Jim Lee cover that had all the X-Men of the time [X-Men #1], so we did one with all the X-Men ever," Schmidt explains. "Dave had wanted to do the X-Men, so I called him up, asked him and he did it." The issue is not only a celebration of an X-Men anniversary, but it also puts the Children of the Atom on the much-anticipated road to the upcoming 'Endangered Species' mega-crossover. Now, without further delay, here are Schmidt and X-Men writer Mike Carey to discuss their favorite characters, what they might be up to in the following year and why certain characters appear the way they do on this monumental cover.

HUSK (1) "Paige GuthrieHuskis a character I've got a lot of time for," says Carey. "Crazy power with loads of anarchic potential, and a really engaging personality."

MYSTIQUE (2) "Mystique is a much more complicated proposition, and I think it's impossible to give a straight answer there because you never know what her program is until she reveals it herself," Carey says. "She's a Machiavellian character and she plays her cards very close to her chest. Is she only out for herself? No, not entirely. She's shown on many occasions that she has a wider agenda, and her spiky, indefinable relationship with Rogue has to be taken into account too. But she does play her own game and she never fully opens up to anyone. It's not in her nature to do that."

SABRETOOTH (3) "Sabretooth can't be redeemed," says Carey. "He can't even be housebroken. All you can ever hope to do is to keep him on a tight enough leash that he does no harm to innocent bystanders or to his own side." Schmidt notes, "One of the things that Mike Carey and Mike Marts did when they put that book together was to be really careful that Sabretooth wasn't a hero. The reason that Rogue left and took with Sabretooth was to get him away from the mansion. We saw what happened the last time when he was chained up in the mansionhe escaped and killed Psylocke. Now there's a whole school there with all these kids, and you don't want Sabretooth there. I think that's why Cannonball went too; after his brother died he didn't want Sabretooth there."

ANGEL (8 )"There's something interesting going on with Angel too," Schmidt says, "because he's going to be involved in 'World War Hulk' and he's on the Hulk's side, which probably isn't going to go over very well when Hulk comes to smash the mansion in World War Hulk: X-Men. So we're trying to figure out how that will work out."

BANSHEE (9) "I would have put Banshee in the green costume, but that's the costume he was in when Finch was really reading the book, and it looks great," Schmidt says.

BISHOP (10) "Bishop is on that line where he's always an outsider," Schmidt says. "And I think the characters react to him that way, which I don't know if it's a subconscious thing, but I think the characters have always kept him at arm's length and haven't let him in. There's an 'Endangered Species' one-shot coming out the week before X-Men #200 ships in which Bishop has a really interesting exchange with some of the characters that shows the tension there."

CANNONBALL (11) , ICEMAN (12) "You've got Cannonball and Iceman next to each other there, charging straight into the camera," Carey notes. "That might mean they're going to be fighting side by side in the thick of some serious action."

ROGUE (13) "Rogue will not be leading the X-Men for much longer," reveals Schmidt. "Rogue may not be alive for much longer. In the arc leading up to X-Men #200 there is a severe change in her character that will have ripple effects for quite a while, so she'll have plenty to deal with. She'll be looking for help, but I can't say if she'll find it. She'll remain an important character, but not in a way that anyone can understand. She'll be important, but severely altered."

PSYLOCKE (14) "Well, it's no secret that I've got a hankering to add Psylocke to my crew," Carey says. "If she ever stops by in this universe on her way to someplace else, I'm going to make her a job offer."

GAMBIT (15) "I can point to most [characters] and say, 'I loved it when they did this or that," says Schmidt. So what's his favorite Gambit moment? "When he shot the whole 52-card deck into Gladiator's stomach out on the Shi'ar Empire from the Claremont-Jim Lee issues."

BEAST (16) "The funniest thing [Finch] did was the Beast, because when you look at him he looks like the classic ape Beast, but if you go in closely he actually has the cat lip," Schmidt says. "So he actually drew the proper Beast, but he cheated in the original version. So, I think all the Beast fans will be happy."

HAVOK (17) "He was a favorite for a long time," says Schmidt. "I think I really liked all the concentric circles."

CABLE (18) "Cable is a terrorist and paramilitary whose personal history is one of working around authority or facing it down," Carey says.

CYCLOPS (19) Regarding the possibility of Cyclops showing up and having powers, Carey says, "You can bet good money on the first. As for the second...well, we'll see."

STORM (20) "You're going to see Storm in an X-book, definitely," Carey promises. "She's got other stuff of her own to deal with, but she's not going to turn her back on her friends."

JEAN GREY (21) Will she show up in "Endangered Species" "Sure, why not? Elvis has been dead a long time, and people still see him," Carey says. "There was a debate as to whether Jean Grey should be green or red, so we went with green because it's from when she was good," notes Schmidt.

NIGHTCRAWLER (24) "I've actually become a pretty big Nightcrawler fan in the last five years," Schmidt says. "I like how introspective and religious he is. Given this fictional world where he's hated and yet he's religious, I like that a lot."

MARROW (25), MAGGOTT (26), DR. REYES(27) "I have absolutely nothing against those characters, but they came out when I wasn't really reading comics," Schmidt admits. "I don't dislike them, but I don't have a whole lot of love for them. Of the three I like Cecilia Reyes the best, because I liked her attitude."

LONGSHOT (28), DAZZLER (29) Carey acknowledges he's "always had a soft spot for Longshotless so for Dazzler. Longshot's powers are very cool and I loved the way his personality had been shaped by his powers. His naivety and directness have always been very appealing to me. With Dazzler, beyond her powers and her career, I don't have a strong sense of who she is as a person. She seems to have fluctuated a lot over time."

PROFESSOR X (30) "[He's most important] because he started the ball rolling in the first place," says Carey. "Everything that's happened in X-continuity, for good or bad, has happened as a result of his original vision. He's the pebble that started the avalanche."

MAGNETO (31) "Hey, doesn't Magneto look like he's contemplating something a whole lot darker than a picnic?" ponders Carey. "Xavier too, come to think of it. There's certainly a great, towering mountain of unfinished business there. I'm sure it will come into the equation at some point, and probably sooner than later."

MORE OBSCURE MUTANTS "Bear in mind that the X-universe has contracted," says Carey. "Since House of M there hasn't been this near-infinite supporting cast of mutants that had grown up over the previous couple of decades. Now we're in a position where every life counts and every mutant shares the spotlight just by virtue of still having powers. It's a whole new ballgame."

DEAD X-MEN
It's hard to keep a good mutant down, but sometimes, some of them actually stay dead. Here are the ones lucky enough to grace Finch's cover.

BANSHEE (9) The longtime X-Man met his bitter end when Vulcan returned with a vengeance and guided an airplane into his face. (X-Men: Deadly Genesis #1)

JEAN GREY (21) Holding the record for most deaths in X-Men history, Jean met her most recent end at the finale of Grant Morrison's run in a battle with Magneto/Xorn. An aspect of her returned in X-Men: Phoenix Warsong, but the woman herself continues to push up daisies. (New X-Men #150)

MAGGOTT (26) Maggott's mutant power was that the maggots he controlled were actually his digestive system. Gross. Anyway, he died in one of Weapon X's concentration camps, but not before giving one of his maggots to two kids who were also in the camp. (Weapon X [Vol. 2] #5)

REVANCHE (4) Revanche, at one point, shared a consciousness with Psylocke. Later she joined the X-Men only to find out she had contracted the Legacy Virus. Instead of letting it ravage her body, she chose to end her own life. (X-Men #31)

THUNDERBIRD (5) Thunderbird holds the distinction of being the first dead X-Man. On his second mission, T-Bird jumped onto a plane to take out Count Nefaria, but the exploding plane took him out instead. Curiously, Banshee, who would suffer a similar fate, tried to stop him. (X-Men #95)

JOSEPH (6) Originally thought to be a mind-warped Magneto, Joseph turned out to be Magneto's clone instead. That didn't stop the true Master of Magnetism from killing him in battle, though. (X-Men #87)

CHANGELING (7) Changeling began his career as a villain, but took the place of Professor X when Charles had to prepare for a battle unbeknownst to the X-Men. Changeling died imitating Xavier. (X-Men #42)

SWAY (22), PETRA (23) X-Men: Deadly Genesis revealed a completely unknown team of X-Men featuring Vulcan, Darwin, Petra and Sway who were sent to save the original X-Men when they were stranded on Krakoa. Unfortunately, they were all seemingly killed. Since then, Darwin and Vulcan have returned, but Petra and Sway have had the decency to stay dead. (X-Men: Deadly Genesis)

Long, but good read. I definitely want Carey to get Psylocke in his book.

Lord knows Claremont's not going to do anything good with her in Exiles. Plus, she doesn't belong there. She belongs in the 616 universe. Maybe when she comes back, she should bring Blink with her.

Marvel to Kill Major X-Men Characters
Endangered species, indeed. Who dies?

May 18, 2007 - "No more mutants."

Those three words, uttered by the Scarlet Witch during the finale of House of M, changed the landscape of the world. Millions of mutants were instantly powerless. This June, X-Men: Endangered Species will closely examine the impact of these changes. What happens to a species when there are no new births in the population? Can anything be done to reverse the situation? Will anyone help a group that is widely regarded as a menace?

Writer Mike Carey and Scot Eaton will helm a special one-shot that will then kick off an ongoing series of backstories throughout some of the core X-Men books. This storyline will then lead to a major Marvel mutant event in the fall, though the company is remaining quiet on details. Below is the cover to the one-shot. We see a group of X-Men gathering on the hillside of a graveyard. Who has passed? Prior to today we had no idea who might die during Endangered. IGN is about to change that.

One thing is for sure, the X-Men will have their hands full. We've seen that Mr. Sinister is lurking in the shadows, and that definitely doesn't bode well for the team. We've also heard rumblings about Magneto. He's currently powerless, but you never know what might happen in the next five months. Marvel has provided IGN with two images from the special. The first shows Wolverine, Nightcrawler, Cannonball, Cyclops and Iceman rushing into battle.

Without a doubt, that is one formidable group of mutants. We've seen countless foes taken down by less powerful X-Men. But this is Endangered Species, and major changes are in store for Marvel's Mighty Mutants. Mike Carey has also established a trend for creating incredibly powerful villains. Ordinarily we'd assume a team like this could handle any threat, but then we took a look at the second image.

Wolverine is the only one left. Surrounding him are the tombstones of Ororo Monroe (Storm), Hank McCoy (Beast), Kitty Pryde (Shadowcat), two tombs labeled Summers (Cyclops and Cable) and perhaps one for Bishop. That is one hefty body count. What could result in such carnage? Who has the potential to unleash such an apocalypse? Certainly something sinister is happening, and there's no telling if the upcoming one-shot will provide answers or merely show us that certain doom is coming in just a few months.

I think they're completely overreacting here a tad, don't ya think. Sheesh. I know that Carey's arc leading up to the event is going to have a death, but there's nothing been said that confirms there will be a bunch of deaths in the event itself, and this doesn't really confirm anything either.

WTF in the second picture they are all rushing into battle and emma is a
standing aroung like its a fashion shoot!

Well she might be, uh...thinking really hard.

...

I dunno.

Wow, what a coincidence! There's a cover that features the gravesones of X-Men, and only WOLVERINE is still alive to mourn. That's so original!

God I hate Marvel sometimes.

So does this mean all the mutants on the cover of 200 will be in the One-shot or something?

Um, I thought Magneto was believed "dead" after the helicopter explosion when The Collective possessed him

ROFL! That IS a coincidence.

Agreed.

I hate having her in the exiles. She is going no where, shes practically in limbo.

I want her on a main team in the 616 too.
