Comics The '07 X-Event: Endangered Species, Messiah Complex, & Disassembled

You know what I'd love right now? For Gambit to turn out to be a skrull. Yeah, he's been one since 1997; the real one's been chilling in the Caribbean since then.

Simultaneous loving a la Chef circa 1998.

And shame on you if you don't get the reference.

I bear the mark of shame forevermore. Whats the reference?

Chef in South Park. Episode "Summer Sucks"

He's on vacation on some unnamed tropical island. The kids call him to ask for help. He tells to f**k off so he can back to singing about "simultaneous loving" to the 2/3 chicks surrounding him. :D

I remember that episode now.

"Now children, you know I don't usually say this...but fug ya!"

*hangs up*

...I miss Chef.

So I guess he tried to look for them, thus why he was absent from 201. Of course, he couldn't find them, so he just went on.

What is it with dudes and South Park?

The show being a howler, mostly. Well, most of seasons 1 through 8.

Past 2-3 years have been so-so although the last few episodes rocked hard.

Slant said:
Eh, they gave him a new pair for 200 and he already threw them away.

Thats gotta be a record.

Refer to the howler thingy I just mentioned.

From potentially bada$$ to lovesick in the span of, what, a DAY? :wow:

I damn near pissed myself during the two "Imagination Land" Episodes we've seen so far. Absolutely priceless.

I've only seen part of the first one, but it was hilarious. We've got:

Talking woodland critters raping Kurt Russel and a squad of marines to death(they're devil-worshippers).

Jesus on the High Council of Imaginary characters.

Cartman's quest to force Kyle to suck his balls.

Terrorists suicide-bombing imagination-land

And the Army about to nuke our imaginations.

To answer your question, Queen, THATS why guys like South Park. :woot:

can't wait till they clear up the whole House of M depowerment thing. It suck

Not really. In all honesty, The HoM Aftermath brought out alot of good stories.... not right away, mind you, but it did. Hell, we'd probably have way lamer stories coming out than we already have. (Not that I think the stories we have now are lame, but others do. I love the x-books.) Hell, because of HoM, Jubilee is in an ongoing title. Jubilee, of all people.(I grew up with Jubes from the cartoon, my love for her is automatic.)

Our coverage for "Messiah Complex" is winding down, but we still have some goodies waiting for you. Don't forget, the first issue of the X-event ships this Wednesday!

Moving along, there are a few more concepts we wanted to touch upon that we felt were important to "Messiah Complex." Today's is simply the notion of mutants being an endangered species. Past events, no matter how high the stakes, did have trouble convincing us that mutants would disappear from the face of the Earth. This time around things are a little different - there are only a few hundred mutants out there, and their numbers are slowly decreasing.

Despite being a few weeks too long (let's be honest), the "Endangered Species" back-up stories touched upon this topic repeatedly. Beast's futile search for a cure or solution to his species' bleak future served to remind readers that this isn't something that can be changed through the course of a battle. Those of you just getting ready to pick up an X-book for the first time in years should definitely be aware of the situation. In the end it appears that the X-Men will be undone by age and attrition, not because of some sinister plot by Apocalypse.

We tossed in a couple cool images from New X-Men because thematically we felt the youngest students of Charles Xavier fit this idea. This is effectively the last class of Xavier's School for Gifted Children. As they graduate and move on, few if any will replace them. Making matters more tense is that the kids clearly want to help resolve this problem, despite Xavier's objections. Readers can also get a glimpse at Humberto Ramos' stylings of the youthful mutants. What fate lies in store for the New X-Men? Can this species ever be saved? We'll start to find out this Wednesday. As always, we contacted Nick Lowe for some commentary on our topic for today.

Day Eleven
Endangered Species - The Beginning of the End

Nick Lowe: "What we were trying to do with "Endangered Species" was try and drive the point home—Mutants have no hope. For a species, birth is hope. Each new member of that species represents the chance for proliferation. With no new mutant proliferation, they're done.

" 'Endangered Species' was one of the first things Axel put into motion when he became X-Men Group Editor. We'd had the creative summit and planned out "Messiah CompleX". Axel wanted to be sure that the idea of "no more mutants" had taken hold. So we made an increased push in the ongoing series to drive the fact home and "Endangered Species" came into existence. That's why Beast made sense for the center of that story. He was the one who would keep looking. And when your biggest brain, the foremost scientist, comes up dry… That's a dark time for the X-Men.

"That's why the baby's birth is so huge. It's the ray of light. It's the possibility that there is hope for a species that had none."

Many thanks as always, Nick. Stay tuned for tomorrow's update, which includes some killer art and more commentary from the editorial peanut gallery. In just a couple short days you will be able to wander down the same path we have. The thing to keep in mind is that the first chapter merely sets the spark and eventually ignites a fire. Stay tuned for more...

It's better than forcing him into the "benevolent father-figure" role. Again.

I called it. I told you all he'd get his ass kicked.

I'm guessing Rogue swoops in to save him in the next page.

I'm sorry, but I still find the new outfits cool. And Although I sometimes get mad at Ramos' art, overall like it. Scratch that, I like it completely.
