Comics The '07 X-Event: Endangered Species, Messiah Complex, & Disassembled

i think it's quite sad that people are rushing to identify as either gay or straight...we have such a screwed up society, as if it all really matters....
Are you referring to the obvious joking in this thread or in real life?

I just love those Illyana pages!!! I can't believe she is finally back after all this time, she is such a favorite of mine it's preposterous... I LOVE HER! :D

Same here!!! :woot: I'm really, really excited.

Wow, Im shocked that Marvel is using Illyana. I thought her plot was going to die after New X-men ended. She would be the perfect fit to end up in AXM with her brother there, and her history with Storm, Emma and Kitty. Illyana would be a good choice to have react to what happened with Kitty. Those 2 were always close and Illyana just missed her. I can see her trying to save her

*shrugs* Honestly, people here and in real life can think that I participate in lesbian orgies every Wednesday for all I care.

that explains alot. Now we know why you don't mind that your boyfriend likes to grease other men up...its all a part of the *arrangement* bravo my dead, bravo

Rest assured that we'd probably be bugging you for stories and/or video evidence if that was the case. :woot:

And, Outcry, you're normally one of the coolest posters here on the Hype. But I honestly have to tell you to grow a backbone on this one and stop being so paranoid. As strange as it may seem to you, not everyone has strong feelings about this subject and can't stand the thought of being considered as anything but straight. I have several friends who are gay or bi, but that's not exactly how I identify them.

To be completely straightforward, people need to stop being so touchy about a lot of subjects. Look, I've got more Native American in me than any other race/nationality. I identify more with those cultures in many ways than I do what we've built here in America. Do I get upset when I see teams like the Redskins or Blackhawks? No. They're freaking sports teams and certainly nothing to get upset about. Despite that, the Arkansas State Indians had to change their mascot and become the Arkansas State Red Wolves because of an NCAA ruling so that Native Americans wouldn't be offended. So did other teams with similar names.

I don't know if you live in the U.S., but as a whole we've become far too thin-skinned as a society. There's a routine by one of the more famous black comedians that talks about the jokes that blacks can get away with (the word n****r was used frequently) that would ruin the career of a white comedian if he or she ever used it. And the guy (Chris Rock, I think) was right. You or any other non-straight person here can make remarks all day with impunity, but those of us making the same remarks have to worry about being labeled (discretely, but still labeled) closet homophobes. If the question had been, "Raise your hand if you're gay or bi," you'd say it was to show one's pride in one's sexuality. Because it wasn't, you imply that we were just trying to avoid the label of "gay."

I'm sorry that this post rambled on so long and I probably shouldn't have posted now, but Finals Week is about to start, it's late, and the quiet implications of homophobia started to tick me off. I don't think anyone who had a problem with people of different sexualities, races, religions, or, heck, overall backgrounds wound hang out in forums like this where one sees people of all kinds. Just remember that discrimination can always run both ways.

*ahem*...was this directed at me? really? me?
you could have even used the term *reverse racism* to complete your useless rant. does thou protest too much?

i never claimed or accused anyone of anything. to assume is cleary to mkae an *ass* more of u than me.

i merely stated that it was sad that people had to claim one thing or another in order to feel safe and happy about themselves....just how does that justify you likening it to Native Americans being offended because National teams and college teams use native american mascots? i personally think none should...but tell that to the seminole tribe that sold out and allowed Florida State to keep their name...for a fee.

as far as African Americans and the N word...that certainly didn't stop you from typing the word out in its entirety or did u merely use the 'n' and count out the little stars that substitute for letters in profane words? i cannot make excuses as for why the word is used by people in that community against each other nonetheless, but why would YOU or anyone else want to use it? would you be using it to describe black people only? or would you use it as a 'term of endearment' when describing one of your 'majorily native american' friendds or otherwise? go ahead. feel free. eat your heart out.

never called you nor anyone else a homophobe, nor was it thinly implied. what u got out of it is all your own doings, but perhaps its just the stress of finals wearing down on you, who knows?

You accuse Brand of making assumptions, but in the very next sentence assume that my hand raising joke was made in order to feel safe/happy.

2+2=5

I figured somebody would catch feelings, but not you Outcry. Not as much as you enjoy givin me a good ribbin about greasing men up

*ahem*...was this directed at me? really? me?

Part of it was directed at you, yes. But the rest is how I honestly see our culture now--too quick to sue, too quick to be offended if we see the slightest opening.

i never claimed or accused anyone of anything. to assume is cleary to mkae an *ass* more of u than me.

This all started when you quoted one of my posts, then later said "it's all bred from 'real life.' " The fact that you had to (quietly) chastise those posters taking place in the joke, even though you never singled anyone out, is where the assumption took place--you must have assumed we either had something against gays/bis or couldn't stand the thought of being considered gay/bi. It couldn't have been JUST A JOKE.

Turning that around, if, say, Valechan had started this and asked for all the gay people to raise their hands, would you have had the same reaction? Would you have said that such a thing was done because Valechan and anyone else was proud of their sexuality or that they couldn't stand the thought of mistakenly being considered straight?

i merely stated that it was sad that people had to claim one thing or another in order to feel safe and happy about themselves....just how does that justify you likening it to Native Americans being offended because National teams and college teams use native american mascots? i personally think none should...but tell that to the seminole tribe that sold out and allowed Florida State to keep their name...for a fee.

I didn't liken people claiming gay or straight to Native American mascots. I was comparing people getting offended over little things when there are much bigger things to worry about. Not all people of Native American descent are worried about such trivial things, fortunately. Similarly, I think people shouldn't worry about looking for every little thing to worry over. Sometimes a joke is just a joke and doesn't hint at any hidden maliciousness.

as far as African Americans and the N word...that certainly didn't stop you from typing the word out in its entirety or did u merely use the 'n' and count out the little stars that substitute for letters in profane words? i cannot make excuses as for why the word is used by people in that community against each other nonetheless, but why would YOU or anyone else want to use it? would you be using it to describe black people only? or would you use it as a 'term of endearment' when describing one of your 'majorily native american' friendds or otherwise? go ahead. feel free. eat your heart out.
The auto-editor blocks out all of the letters of an edited word. I "used" the word--described the act, not insulted anyone--because I was giving an example of the double standards we see every day around us It's fine for my school's basketball team (who all live one building over from mine and use the adjacent court) to use that word, but if I or any other Caucasian were to say that in real life, even if it wasn't meant in anger or as an insult? Then there would be problems.

never called you nor anyone else a homophobe, nor was it thinly implied. what u got out of it is all your own doings, but perhaps its just the stress of finals wearing down on you, who knows?

Like I said, this all got started when you quoted one of my posts and took "on our side" totally out of context. Those of us who posted weren't rushing to avoid the title of "gay." We were just joking about how few of us there are, relatively, around here.

As for Finals, I'm sure that hasn't helped. Catching eight hours of sleep in three days really sucks, but at least I feel ready to face the coming week of hell. :woot:

Dudes, chill, I can't believe you're discussing issues like this in a Messiah Complex thread... damn straights ¬¬ (jk :P)

See? Now that's more like it! :oldrazz:

Alright, I'm off to fail my Botany Final. See ya'll after the dust clears.

Boo, plants

You think that's bad, you should try working on a plant collection. If anything is gonna sink my Botany grade, it'll be the darn collection we had to work on all semester--especially since most of the trees here only started to leaf out a few weeks ago. Barring a bad grade on that, I should escape with a solid B.

Really looking forward to next semester's bug collection . . . watch out, local spider population. :wow:

again...i didn't chastise anyone. if you were offended then perhaps that says more about you than me. i didnt assume anything. thats all you buddy. i merely asked why there was a need to 'choose sides'

actually, if it HAD been the other way around yes, i would have made the exact same comments, as i said before, you protest too much.

I didn't liken people claiming gay or straight to Native American mascots. I was comparing people getting offended over little things when there are much bigger things to worry about. hey, i like jokes too. i just have yet to see any. and i would hardly call the objectification of a whole group of people trivial. reducing them to archetypes in order to profit off of them is not trivial.

wow...your school's basketball team? implying what exactly? that they are ALL African American...how Imus-like of you. and before you stated you are native American...now you are Caucasian? interesting. problems indeed.

Like I said, this all got started when you quoted one of my posts and took "on our side" totally out of context. Those of us who posted weren't rushing to avoid the title of "gay." We were just joking about how few of us there are, relatively, around here.

oh, and good luck with the finals

Again, we weren't choosing sides. We weren't exactly about to start a war here. It was a joke. You didn't find it funny, and that's fine. Different strokes for different folks, and all that.

actually, if it HAD been the other way around yes, i would have made the exact same comments, as i said before, you protest too much.

I hope so, but I'll just let this drop rather than pushing any further.

hey, i like jokes too. i just have yet to see any. and i would hardly call the objectification of a whole group of people trivial. reducing them to archetypes in order to profit off of them is not trivial.

The entire sports world is about objectification and entertainment. It's about making money and having a good time. What about the Notre Dame Fighting Irish? Isn't that offensive?

Just about every mascot out there is a mockery of some kind. The "cowboys" that I've seen in no way represent people who do that sort of work and wouldn't last a day on a real ranch. MSU's Spartan? That steroid-pumped freak is an insult to Greeks. And should we really be glorifying a destructive force like a hurricane, a storm that kills so many every year, by having the Miami Hurricanes?

It's easy to find something to be offended by if you just look around.

I think it's great that the Seminole nation is getting paid for FSU using the Seminole name. I don't have a problem with that. But if the issue had never come up, I don't think it would have been that big of a deal. After all, I don't think Notre Dame has to pay a stipend to Ireland.

wow...your school's basketball team? implying what exactly? that they are ALL African American...how Imus-like of you. and before you stated you are native American...now you are Caucasian? interesting. problems indeed.

Yep. Every single player, on both of our teams, is African American or of AA descent. We had one white player last year from New Zealand, but I haven't seen him around this year. One of my lab partners is on our women's team and just got accepted to Cincinnati; she's half-AA and half-Native American. I don't know of any others of mixed descent. It's the guys who frequent the court outside my apartment most often, and that's where I hear the "n" word used usually. The female players I know avoid using it, for the most part.

And, I didn't say I was Native American before. I said I had more Native American blood than any other nationality/race and identified with them quite strongly. I'm close to 1/2 blood from two different tribes (most of it Cherokee from my father's side), but I also have a little bit of Danish, Irish, and who knows what else. That leaves me with brown hair, brown eyes, and the whitest skin you've ever seen. No one would ever classify me as "Native American." :woot:

uh huh.

oh, and good luck with the finals

Thanks. One down, three to go. Thankfully, the one I've finished was one of the two hard ones.

I don't post in two months and THIS is what I come back to? Gosh.

And since WHEN did the comic book price tag go up a FULL DOLLAR? F-ing sucks.

everything's gone up in price bc our economy absolutely sucks at the moment

Comics went up? Since when?

I'm still paying $2.99 for normals, and $3.99 for extended/specialty issues.

X-Men: Divided We Stand Book 2 will arrive in stores on May 21 from Marvel Comics. The issue is written by Mike Carey, C.B. Cebulski, Duane Swierczynski and Andy Schmidt, with art by Scot Eaton, David LaFuente, Frazer Irving and more and a cover by Brandon Peterson.

Here's how Marvel describes the issue:

"Exploring the fallout of Messiah CompleX, the second part of this collection of short stories follows some of our favorite mutants as they make their way in a world without the X-Men. And only those who adapt will survive. Featuring Beast, Dark Beast, Havok, Vulcan and Surge!"

X-Men: Divided We Stand Book 2 will be 48 pages and will cost $3.50

Havok is gonna be a hardazz when he gets out of prison. The Magik story interests me and i wanna know wassup wit Dani and Surge..also..Forge is gonna bring Cable back, i got a feelin

I loved the last Divided We Stand. I think my favorite one was Havok's story. Beast's was surprisingly good. The only one I didnt care for was Forge as I dont like his character
