Superman: The Movie The 1978-1987 Films Appreciation Thread

What set of films does everyone own, I have several 'incarnations' but my fave is the most recent blu-ray set with a ton of extras and documentaries on.

I have the blu ray set with all six films (STM, SII, SII DC, SIII, SIV and SR), used to have the steel tin set on DVD but when I got the Blu ray set I gave to that a mate.

I have Supergirl on an international cut cause it's extended.

I also have the fan cut Restored International Cut of Superman II that preceded the official release of the Donner Cut.

I have STM & SM II on DVD in a collectors edition

Supergirl on DVD

Silver tin anniversary box with all on DVD (STM through to SR, plus docs)

Recent Blu-ray release which is the silver tin content just Blu ray spec, including Donner cut of SM II.

Anything particularly interesting on that extended cut of Supergirl?

I'm not actually sure what is different, I just know it's longer than the other official release of the film.

The DVD itself though has some really good extras too where the other official release is bare bones.

Personally quite like Supergirl, I think Slater gives it all a good effort, it's just a bit too 'glossy' for me, but it's a good stab at the character.

Okay, thanks. Might have to invest in a copy of Supergirl. I remember I quite liked it at the time and I've only seen it a couple of times since.

Agreed. I had a very nice poster of Slater as Supergirl on my bedroom wall!

Taking BH/HHH's lead from other threads, what are everyone's favourite scenes from the films ?

Superman '78 was the first movie I ever saw on the big screen at 3 years old and it's the only memory I have at that age. Last year I finally got to see it again on the big screen 38 years later when my AMC theater showed it on classic movie night. I didn't think I would ever get that chance again. The audience was a mixture of young and old and it was quite an experience to see the film with Superman fans. When the classic John Williams theme started the theater erupted.

Sir, I will leave that in your very capable hands, they are the brain child of your expertise :yay:

Haha okie coke, lets start with the first one and make our way through the series.

In the Henry Cavill thread there's been a lot of discussion on the events / affects of Superman 'killing' as a character, what are everyone's thoughts of this in the Reeve era ?

In Superman II, Superman does kill Zod as well.
But its done in a more "lighthearted" way. There's no real consequences.
Which isn't a knock against the movie. I enjoyed it.

Reeve era is classic - a much more mainstream, family-friendly version of Superman (though dated since made in the 70s, but still fun and enjoyable to watch).

Cavill Superman takes place in more cynical (more realistic?) environment - it's less mainstream - a darker interpretation for older audience members. There's consequences to his actions - when he fights, cities are leveled, innocents are collateral damage - and he's forced to kill the bad guys.

That's my take on it. I appreciate both interpretations for different reasons.

^ This exactly.

The big difference being as we are saying is, Reeve's Superman 'seemed' to take pleasure from the achievement of it all, and Cavill's Superman showed guilt, pain and it was his last option, not a choice.

Having not seen seen Donner's cut of II for so long, I'm not sure if Superman still 'kills' in his edit.

yea, Reeve's superman enjoys being a hero. but not because of ego, but it genuinely makes him feel good to help others out.
Cavill's has the weight of the world on his shoulders, because the world's questioning his every move - which in turns causes him to question and doubt himself.
i think both versions have their merits - the movies have made me appreciate superman even more.

I have not seen the Donner cut for II yet, but I did hear about there was a cut scene that shows Zod actually didn't die, but is shown being arrested? (since he lost his powers and has become essentially human).

He still kills in the Donner Cut. The scene of Zod and co been taken away by the artic police is a deleted scene. I don't know why they didn't add it back into the Donner Cut though. But given its deleted he definitely kills them.

Documentary on making of the first film...
