Rent is not a good movie. It was critically panned for good reason. And I get wanting to use as many members of the original cast as possible, but frankly, when you make the characters way too old in a story like that, you really undermine the emotional impact imo. Tick, Tick…Boom! is my preferred Larson musical in general though.

Chicago was a solid adaptation but is an overrated stage musical to begin with tbh.

Maybe the Rent movie aged okay because as a millennial I can totally buy a bunch of 30-somethings complaining about the cost of living.

Also to be fair, at least it wasn't nearly as distracting as Ben Platt pushing 30 (and very much looking it) starring as a high schooler in the Dear Evan Hansen movie.

On the subject of musicals, I mean it's not my favorite genre onscreen, but if I had to go with anything I would pick Dreamgirls as my favorite. They took some liberties with the Broadway play, but they made good, distinctive choices.

Really a well done movie IMO.

I didn't expect to like Spielberg's West Side Story, but damn I was hooked.

Again, not a big western canon musical guy but Better Man ruled. Especially about a guy I never knew was a big thing in the UK.

Funny story, I didn't like this much when I first saw it (except for the Roxanne scene, that's epic as hell no matter how you feel about the movie) but I came around to it more over the years.

Maybe an unpopular musical opinion: Maybe it's because I just love the musical so much but apart from the weird AF cinematography I thought the Les Mis movie was good. I can even forgive Russell Crowe being miscast as a singer because he at least turned in one of his last decent performances besides The Nice Guys. Still, the first couple of lines he belts out give me the giggles.

I didn't use to like musicals (Rent being the biggest offender), but I've turned into a fan during the last five years or so. Some of my favorites are Sound of Music, Rocketman, Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio, Wonka, Better Man, both versions of West Side Story, Wicked...
