You know, the movie by James Cameron The Abyss came out around 1989.

I just rewatched it. I have the Special edition, which actually has the full movie. About an extra 30 minutes from the movie that was originally released.

I gotta say, after watching it again, I really found this movie to be excellently done.
Its always been one of those movies that kind of touch you on some sort of an emotional level

Anyone else watch the full version?

Weird. I just brought the Special edition yesterday and finished watching both versions. And yes, it's a very underrated film. My second favourite Cameron film. Prefere the ending of the original and the extended scenes which were cut out of the original. After Terminator 2 Cameron had the final say on all his films which is funny since Titanic could have done with some trimming.

However, this and Payback are two examples of how a Special Edition or Directors Cut can make a film better unlike Donnie Darko: Directors Cut, which took a cult medicore film and made it even more boring and crappy and spoon fed to the audience.

I liked it a lot. Really tugs on your emotions.

i rented and watched it late last year. i must've watched it about 5 or 6 times before i returned it. i love that movie and the special edition only makes it better. you hit the nail on the head when you said it touches you on an emotional level. everytime i see Bud's reaction to Lindsey waking back up, i get all teary eyed. it's definitely one of my fave movies of all time and to this day no one has been able to make a movie that comes close to the look and feel of the Abyss. i commend James Cameron for all the hard work that was put into that film. it's one of the greatest underrated movies imo.

Yup.
I agree...I work from home 2 days a week...and typically while working, I put a movie in.
Well, I am in the process of Ripping ALL my DVDs and just watched this one while ripping another.

Its frankly put, just awesome how he integrates the heart into the movie. As you all stated, the moment when Bud is trying to save Lindsey.

Then, when he types on his keyboard
"Knew this was a one way trip, but I had to come"
"Love you wife"

You just sit there, getting a little emotional taking it in.

the thing i love about this movie is that (almost) everything feels real. it's not until the end that it starts getting fantastical, but up until then you can believe that everything can happen in the real world. imo, that's what sets good movies apart from bad ones. even though the ideas are otherworldly, Cameron found a way to make the movie feel so real that your emotions are invested in these "real" characters in very dark, grim, and "real" situations.

That is true too! Its believable...and seems real

I remember watching an episode of 'The Directors' which showed the work of James Cameron. In it he explained that The Abyss was the most physically difficult film he made due to the fact 90% of it was filmed underwater. He even had to watch the dailies underwater since he didn't have time to be de-pressurised from the depth of water he had been in.

On a side note, alot of people talk crap about Cameron since he is always hard to his cast and crew but he just wants the best to come from the production team, even if it means being stern on set. Think of the hard time the crew of Alins gave him.

James Cameron is the epitome of "perfectionist" and the more of perfectionist someone is, the less compromise there is. i admire Cameron's perfectionism because if he weren't the way he is then we wouldn't have as many great movies...including the ones inspired by Cameron and his films.

Huh...never seen it :(

it's kinda one of those movies that you have to be in the mood to watch, but it's definitely a classic.

I've always been a huge fan of this movie and always felt that it was underrated. If I remember correctly, at the time it was released, it was raked over the coals for being overly expensive. (Soon afterwards, "Waterworld" came about and pretty much received the same treatment.)

The one part that really fascinated me was the breathable fluid stuff. Apparently it was real and the rat in the scene is really breathing it. But it wasn't able to be used by humans. Apparently the rat died some time after the filming of the scene and I believe the ASPCA had to inspect the rat to ensure that it hadn't died from the fluid. (All of this may have been some elaborate marketing ploy by 20th Century Fox, but I honestly think it was all true.)

right you are, matt. that rat died from different circumstances unrelated to that scene. they haven't come up with a solution for humans to breath any similar liquid that i know of...but i do love that idea. it's a totally plausible idea, we just haven't achieved it yet.

I disliked The Abyss, but I suppose I can see why some find it classic.

Please elaborate, i never heard of any problems with that movie, both Biehn, Paxton and Weaver have all worked with him again.

As for The Abyss, yes it is a very under-rated movie, its a very emotional movie also, possibly THE most emotional movie i have ever watched, Cameron is a master film-maker, he is possibly my favourite of all time. And I for one, cant wait to see what Avatar has in store for us.

Nobody's talking about the cast. The crew didn't like James Cameron. The only major film he had done so far was The Terminator, and they thought that he was too young and inexperienced for a movie such Aliens, especially since he had to follow Ridley Scott's footsteps. They didn't like the way he worked and often would not follow his directions.

I love the Abyss. It's just such a great film. Suspenseful, interesting, well acted, and with a lot of heart. It has a pretty memorable score as well.

I haven't watched the movie in years and a few weeks ago I came across the special edition dvd. After watching it again for the first time in awhile, it was well worth it, again. It's such a wonderful movie, it was done so well. It is on my list of favorite movies, that's for sure.

My apologies, i misunterstood.

How wrong the crew were proven though huh?

Watching
the wrecked sub fill up with water while Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio stayed behind waiting to drown
was devastating.
She reminded me of my girlfriend at the time and I felt like I was living it. Wh00.

Its the weakest Cameron film imo, but still a 4/5.
