The Accent

Which Accent Should Doctor Strange Have?

  • American (Like the comics)

  • British (Benedict's natural voice)

Because Harrison Ford wasn't able to be Solo, Indy and Deckard, people only saw Ford as Han Solo :o
Strange

True. It worked for him.
Hopefully it will work for Cumberbatch too.

^- Just gonna go with what seems to be a popular way of making a point on these forums...

But seriously, you have a point. I doubt it will be bad, I just hope it won't affect anything in a bad way.

I'm still torn. Neither gets my vote for now. Anyone else have any more reasons for or against a British/American accent?

Pros of American - Comic accurate

Pros of British - Benedicts natural accent, his american accent doesn't have the same presence, worldwide heroes, Strange could easily be a pompous private school Brit

I wouldn't be upset if he's American obviously, I just think out the two British makes sense.

If this was Spider-man, Batman or Superman for example I wouldn't want them not American (and I'm not American) but Dr Strange I don't feel matters what his nationality is, a lot of the time he is beyond Earthly matters anyway.

I have loved the character of Doctor Strange for literally decades, and I want him to be portrayed as the brilliant, dedicated sorcerer I have always seen him to be. If the actor's admittedly incredible voice is accentuated by retaining his accent, I have zero objection, because I want to believe in the character. I want to hear him say "By the Vishanti" and believe it. I want to believe when the character walks into the room he sees more about reality than everyone else. If Benedict does that, him sounding American or English has no importance to me, and I do push for things to be like the comic. I must say, I am far more interested in him having a beard and white temples, than what he sounds like, accent -wise. Because I have seen Doctor Strange for decades, but with little exception, none of the voice actors from cartoons really sound like what I have always pictured him to sound. Like an elegant man, educated and calm in all circumstances. Where every statement could have many different meanings. I don't see why he couldn't sound English.

I think that's about as good as we're going to do. Aaaand... /thread. :)

I say let him keep his normal accent. Just because Benedict has one of the coolest sounding voices I've ever heard.

well i think.... i think Benny will pull a posh American "accent", which isnt so much accent as more of manner of speaking and decorum. so yeah very high society, Ivy League-ish type person, which fits very well with the superior-than-thou, pre-accident Dr Strange.

Keep his British accent, then I'm British so I would say that.

i honestly think there shouldnt be too much of a problem with straying from cannon and letting him keep his natural accent, i mean its not the firs time marvel has changed the nationality of characters. Ulysses Klaw is apparently south african now

why?

If hes from New York city, why would he have a British accent? Are they gonna make him a Brit living in NYC? Thats kinda strange. If Christian Bale can do American for Bruce Wayne, I think Benny can do it for Doc Strange. Although Fitz and Simmons on AOS (set in USA) have Brit accents so I guess its possible.

I really dont mind what his accent is like as long as it makes sense and the character is great.

What's so odd (decided to avoid using the word strange) about a Brit (particularly a world-renowned surgeon) living in New York City? I bet there are some living there right now.

I'm trying to figure out why so many want Strange to be British now just so he can have a British accent. i never understood why a British accent somehow adds elegance to a character. It doesn't. Just because Hollywood has put forth this scenario means nothing. They do it all the time and frankly it's silly to think someone with an American accent doesn't make a character sound cool. it would be such a cliche to make Strange a British wizard now. I highly doubt Marvel will do this and Strange will be American as h should. Besides we just got 8 films full of British witches and Wizards in the Potter films. I'm proud to be an American and we do speak in cool and awesome ways. Their is such diversity in the english language here in the states, it'll be a shame to ignore how great our accent is because people have been brainwashed the a Brit accent is somehow better than an american one.

You wouldn't be down for a Geordie or Cockney Strange?

It will likely be generic American or Received Pronunciation.

It's cos Cumberbatches voice specifically sounds awesome that's why and it clearly loses a lot of the gravitas when he does an american accent

It has nothing to do with British vs American.

That's my view. I think the casting choice of Benedict Cumberbatch helped determine the decision. Plus, I think a British accent helps increase both the story of egotistical A-Hole that he starts with and mysterious sorceror.

+1.

His British accent is just on a different stratosphere, mostly seen as the best voice in the industry by far. Why not use that ? He is crazy with voices and has created so many different British ones each British accent he does is different I'm sure he can come up with a good one.

He does great American accents too BUT it doesn't stand out as great as the British ones in comparison. When you have 2 different accents and one is superior to the other why go with the lesser one ? Makes no sense.

English please. I'm obviously biased of course, but I just like the fact that it would set Strange apart a little bit too.

Yeah if they're pushing the global aspects of the Marvel brand, he should be a Brit
the percentage of American superheroes in the MCU is too damn high!

He was born in america. His father became the american ambassador to britain so spent many years there. Then moved back to new york to do his medical studies and because doctors in the states get a hell of a lot more money then british ones.

Sorted he's american with british accent.

Sequence of Dr Strange going through all these weird realms, getting visions, seeing strange creatures, demons etc. suddenly we see a blurry image of what looks like an wise old man sitting in a small room praying, it gets a bit clearer....clearer still...until we see

...its actually TREVOR SLATTERY aka Sir Laurence Oblivier going to the bathroom in his tiny jail cell. He lets out a loud *PBBBLT* then says Bloody ell! and starts chuckling...as he mumbles something about "no more toast n beans for dinner" the image blurs up again.

Dr Strange looks horrified...onto the next dimension...

would be hilarious if he spoke american english but went full british during spell casting :funny:
