In the plus column, at least this guy has a definite style and point of view. His own work that he became known for twists the familiar with the offbeat. I do like that the DCEU is willing to take chances, and given that Zack Snyder seems to be the central mastermind here, haha, I can't say I'm too surprised that we're being surprised with this.

I'm neutral on this guy as I don't know anything about his work, but I'm excited that Flash has a writer/ director. Here's hoping for the best.

Said elsewhere but the director of Deadpool is also a first time director, however i will say that the flash will most likely be getting a budget over the 75-78 million that Deadpool was being made for
I was going bring up the Deadpool director as well. This isn't a defense or anything as I'm leery about that one as well.

WB definitely doesn't cheap out on their Superhero films like Fox does. I know it sounds like I'm just bashing Fox but if the shoe fits...

The great thing is that this film is 3 years away and they've already picked a director and have a working idea and script on the film, they've got plenty of time to fix stuff up.

As I said in the BvS Boards, I hate this choice.

Hope beyond hope that the guy can prove me wrong, but I despised Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter and Dark Shadows. He's gonna have to win me over in a big way.

Just to offer some perspective, he is the author of the Abe Lincoln book which was, admittedly, pretty popular and successful. I'm not sure if you mean you despise the book or movie, but this guy just co-wrote the screenplay for the film version. Didn't direct it, so I wouldn't lay the blame of it sucking solely at his footsteps. It probably was a concept that never should have been made into a movie in the first place.

Same for Dark Shadows. He wrote the script, but Tim Burton directed. Burton hasn't exactly had the best track record in recent years.

So at this point, he is basically the definition of an untested film talent. I'm sure WB will give him all the help he needs, and I wouldn't be surprised if they added a co-writer or pull a "Terrio" and bring someone in for more polishing later. I like that this guy will be working from a treatment by Lord and Miller, though.

I am uneasy with this choice as I am with the rumor of the director of THOR3. We have had lots of surprises with CBMs in terms of directors though. Who would guess the current golden boys of Marvel would be the Russos, right?

Still... First time out director with an effects heavy film on his shoulders? I... Yeah, a little worried. That said, he is in the Lord and Miller orbit and perhaps they gave the recommendation for him to take over when they bowed out? Fingers crossed...

In a weird, counter-intuitive way, his lack of directorial experience has me even more excited than I normally would be. WB knows they can't afford to f*** around here, so Seth really must have blown them away for them to put their trust in him with something like this.

It's a confusing choice. He must have impressed behind closed doors, because he's not a guy who has much of anything resembling a directing resume outside of Two episodes of the Hard times of RJ Burger.

My feeling is that maybe he will be great for the material and has great ideas. I'm giving the guy a shot just like I'm giving the Thor 3 dude a shot.

I'm not worried, I think he'll do a good job. How long until we start hearing about more casting news? I know the movie is still 1.5 years away but, still

Hopefully not before we hear Wonder Woman casting news. Yes I'm still whining about that. :oldrazz:

Don't care about her promoting an article that isn't even about that. She's being used by a white dork whom is only mad about the hiring because Marvel didn't do it.

The article wasn't the point though. Just how being a White male in Hollywood is great for one's career.

Rapidly losing respect for her. :o

And she's losing respect for you too! :cmad:

Thanks, I was dying to know Ava thought about this Flash news.

You're very welcome.

She linked to the article. I agree that there should be more than white-males directing these films but that is a Marvel vs. DC article and thus I'd prefer to read an article about the subject that isn't about only taking shots at one studio.

More negative reactions..

Male Privilege Watch: First-Time Film Director Seth Grahame-Smith To Direct 'The Flash'

By Melissa Silverstein | Women and Hollywood

In today's chapter in the annals of dude with no experience gets job no woman would ever get, our dude with no directing experience is writer Seth Grahame-Smith of “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter” and “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies” fame. He is the author of the books -- he didn't even direct their big-screen adaptations. He is also the screenwriter behind the horribly-reviewed "Dark Shadows" and upcoming mind boggling (as in WTF is this movie about?) "Lego Batman."

But still none of that matters as he has been anointed wunderkind and given the reins of the upcoming "The Flash" film from Warner Brothers.

Ok, so Grahame-Smith has directed two episodes of MTV's "The Hard Times of RJ Berger," a series he co-created. So he doesn't have zero experience. But let's remember "The Flash" is a big studio superhero flick with a budget rumored to be in the $100 million range. This is a man with ZERO film directing experience and he is being offered the keys to the kingdom. The film already has a release date of March 2018.

Ironically, this announcement comes just a couple of days after we learn that the EEOC will begin talking with women directors about their experiences of discrimination in the industry. BTW, Warner Brothers is one of the worst studios in hiring women directors: From 2009-2013, an abysmal 2.3% of their projects were directed by women.

This practice of hiring men with no or very little experience is commonplace, so much so that it is not even shocking anymore. But it should be. It should be shocking and unacceptable that the word director in Hollywood has become virtually synonymous with being a man -- generally a white one.

See at least that article is calling out every studio and I can get behind that.

What kind of buttnugget directs the movie of their own book?

And I get that they're angry but pretending not to understand why a Lego Batman is happening just makes the person sound dim.

But, given her comments, it's pretty clear she was just talking about Hollywood in general and how someone like Grahame-Smith can get such a big/high profile film from the get-go. I mean, it's right there in the title as to what her point was. Nothing to really do with WB/DC specifically or even BMD.
