to be honest I don't see spider-man as a rival to avatar anytime soon. I can see TA:AoU or a JL movie (even maybe Star Wars) to be a treat to it. People would prefer to see assemble movies more than they see a single hero. I know Spidey is very huge but that wouldn't just be enough to get near avatar

Avatar is the highest grossing movie of all time. I don't see any movie getting near that any time soon. Unless it's directed by James Cameron. Seriously, that guy directed the Titanic and ended up being the highest grossing movie of that time and then he directed Avatar and broke his own record. WTF is up with that guy?

wasn't your point a fantastic (4-5 star out of 5) spider-man movie would be a rival to avatar? if so I don't think I missed your point. if it's not then yeah

Some UK comparisons for the Spider-Man franchise:

Spider-Man (2002)
Opening Weekend: $13,926,679
Total box Office: $45,780,340

Spider-Man 2 (2004)
Opening Weekend:
$13,180,732
Total Box Office:
$49,702,580

Spider-Man 3 (2007)
Opening Weekend:
$23,555,095
Total Box Office:
$67,049,819

The Amazing Spider-Man (2012)
Opening Weekend:
$17,184,334 (6 DAY WEEKEND)
Total Box Office:
$40,286,388

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014)
Opening Weekend: $15 million (5 DAY WEEKEND)
Total Box Office: ???

I would struggle to spin this in too positive a light. It's an average debut. I was hoping it would crack $20 million again in the UK.

This is incorrect. Tomorrow is a holiday in the UK and we don't know how much the film will gross there over the course of the 6 day weekend. Spinning this into a negative is mindblowing to me.

So let's say it adds 2 million tomorrow and matches TASM's 6 day debut. That something you would consider earth shattering?

It's not negative. It's okay.

The movie released over here on Wednesday. Plus we have a 4 day bank holiday weekend

Il say it again its a shame the films not being released the same time Everywhere

It allows films to gain momentum before opening in the States. There's no better advertisement than strong overseas box office numbers.

The top market for the Sony franchise is the UK/Ireland which grabbed $15M. It marks a 49% bigger opening than Winter Soldier in the territory but in 2012, the first installment has a UK opening weekend tally of $17.1M. The same group of market, Sony says, opened comparably to the first installment — and true, some are higher and some are lower.

when i see TASM2 There were alot of kids there, Kids love spider-man

Its Easter here so many cinemas were closed on Sunday.
I have never heard of that before. Usually holiday weekends are big for movies. Do you mind telling me what country you are speaking of?

I agree with that but 2 or 3 weeks is too much for this. They should at least make a 24/25th April for Europe/Latin Asia etc and May 2nd for USA just like what Marvel does. One week seems to work better

Didn't it have a 47M opening? I'm confused.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think they're just referencing the amount for the UK only.

Nothing you mentioned apart from AOU will get near avatar

And I wont be surprised if AOU ends up making 10-15% lesser than than TA, saturation happens pretty quickly (Look at SM2's box office in comparison to SM1)

They are only a limited no of people you can please with a superhero movie while movies like Avatar or Titanic are universal treat for just anybody

I was looking at some of the movies that made a billion...

Like some made roughly $700M-$800M foreign, and $300M domestic. One made $609M foreign, $400M domestic.

Do you think TASM2 can perform like this? My gripe is I only see TASM2 hitting the high $200s domestically.

TASM made 262 DOM. I feel as if this movie is going to do a lot better domestically, probably around MOS numbers if not higher.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 actually came second at the foreign box office... being narrowly beaten Rio 2 going into it's third weekend.

Sony's “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” was second, with $47 million from 14 markets, led by a $15 million opening in the U.K. and Ireland. It opens in the United States on May 2.

What do we think of it's overall foreign prospects?

I am a huge Spidey fan, but the international open has been VERY lukewarm. Only $47 million, and that is after six days on the international market. I'd track this film to have a final gross that is somewhere between $550-650 million. Not a bad take, but not as solid as the first film.

Like I said I think China and Korea and the like could help make up for any under performance in European markets. Every article says that the movie did very well so I'm inclined to believe those articles. It's legs are going to matter of course.

As for domestic I'm lowering my prediction to 235-250mil. The first film made more than my domestic prediction so I might be wrong again.

It's kind of weird...

From my own personal perspective, I'm seeing no buzz what so ever for The Amazing Spider-Man 2. There is nothing on my personal facebook or twitter feed about the movie. It's been out nearly a week and neither me or my friends are dying to see it. We think we might go on Friday night but it's like... ''Eh... We'll see''.

Thats strange as we've attended opening night for every Spider-Man movie since 2002.

All I seen and heard at the end of March was ''Wooo... Captain America tonight!!!'' but nothing for Spider-Man.

Franchise fatigue or is no one else experiencing this?
