wasn't there a report a while back that sony got some money back from the budget? anyone remember something like that? i don't remember what it was but i remember something about them getting money back

Yep, they got a tax credit of 30% by filming in New York

I think it's get an extra 25 million in China and an extra 5 million is each major market.

That should be enough to cross 800 m.

We'll have a better idea next Sunday.

Marking the biggest opening internationally of 2014, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has taken international markets by storm, grossing an estimated $47M as it bows in major territories, including the U.K., Spain, Germany and Belgium and other top spots of Mexico and Australia, to name a few of the 14 markets. The top market for the Sony franchise was the UK/Ireland with grabbed $15M. It marks a 49% bigger opening than Winter Soldier in the territory. The same group of territories, Sony says, opened comparably to the first installment and well above Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Of note is a huge $2.3M from 50 IMAX screens to equal a monster $47,000 per screen average. The first installment of The Amazing Spider-Man in 2012 grossed a total of $40.3M in this territory in 2012, so we’ll see how it plays out. Spider-Man has done particularly well overseas traditionally, although it has yet to top the $1B mark like other Marvel titles have done. China should be a great box office catch for this film as the first installment did exceptionally grossing a total of $48.8M in 2012. Latin America was also very strong for Spidey. Japan, Korea and Russia — which together brought in $96.8M — will be part of the 21 pack of territories The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will open in next weekend.

In Mexico, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 became the highest opener of the year — 26% higher than the Cap — with an $11.1M take. Spidey spun a $6.2M web around Germany — a whopping 70% higher opening than the Cap — and Australia opened with $5.2M (only 2% bigger than the first installment). Other territories such as Belgium ($940K), Austria ($550K), Sweden ($1.1M) and Denmark ($875K) all also beat the opening of The Winter Soldier. It will open in 21 more markets next weekend, including Japan, Russia and South Korea. It was expected to open in Israel this weekend, but Sony said it didn’t.

But in Spain — yikes — this Spiderman sequel got caught in its own web, failing to open in the No. 1 spot. That honor continues to go to the local language pic Spanish Affairs, which has had a stronghold on the market for six weeks in a row. It is the biggest film ever in Spain with $52.8M to date. In 330 runs, it grossed $5.8M this weekend to grab 44% of the marketshare — twice as big as The Amazing Spider-Man 2. In terms of admissions, it holds the record with 6.43M, surpassing the 6.41M title previously held for the past 13 years by The Others. The pic, handled by Universal Pictures International, is now the 4th highest grossing film of all time in the territory, only behind Avatar, The Impossible and Titantic.

That's a safe bet I think. The Spidey name the romance and the action mean a gigantic few weeks for this movie. A billion should be a possibility.

IMO a (near) masterpiece Spidey movie , with acclaim and buzz approaching TDK or TA or even IM levels, makes Avengers money guaranteed.

Soo....SM2 adjusted for inflation?

This movie is no where near TDK or TA levels.

I'm not impressed with these numbers.

Hoping Asia will save the day.

Nope. Last track I had the movie was tracking for an $80 milllion range opening. That's not even Man of Steel buzz.

They still are estimations, but I see this numbers as the beginning of an impressive box office run for TASM2.

Wait what "buzz" is that???

The buzz that the likes of you and others here will keep denying once the film starts its box office run. Once it reaches $1B, you'll be saying that it's the TF2 of the Spider-Man franchise and yadda yadda. This film does have some great buzz and wom from those who have actually seen it. The legs for this will be strong, while people keep making excuses for that.

The hate online against this franchise is strong, but people professing their love for TASM2 is growing exponentially. I feel May will be a very interesting time for Spider-Man enthusiasts all over the world. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is the event film of the year, just like Iron Man 3 last year.

If you don't like the TDK and TA comparisons, it's fine. Call it Iron Man 3 buzz, because that film is brilliant and the GA loved the **** out of it, that's where I believe TASM2 is going. :word:

yeah last i heard like a week or so ago it was tracking for 95 million and captian america 2 made 95 million and captian america is way less popular then spider man so i see no way this movie dosnt make at least 100 on OW

I'm not impressed with these numbers either. I mean they are good but I don't see the growth I thought I would. Asia should save it though, especially China.

I'm starting to think it's going to make less than the first in North America.

SM2 acclaim with TDK quality and TA nerdgasm levels and .modern fx in today's widely expanded marketplace equals 2 billion plus. Throw in some new technology/format (4D, smellovision 2.0, oculus rift stations, 120 fps, etc) at a premium and Avatar is within reach.

OK, not too sure where or what this came from. I dont remember "denying" anything about what this film would make in terms of money.

I was just asking about this great buzz you yourself had heard as I was interested in hearing about it, as I had read a lot of mixed views on it so far from both critics and the general view on this site.

You dont seem to happy about something though so dont worry about it too much.

Lol I was talking about a hypothetical future Spidey film. Haven't seen asm2 yet but haven't heard the word masterpiece come up yet. I was just underlining the fact that as a character/ property Spidey is huge and a ta/TDK/im1 level film would obliterate the box office and could certainly rival avatar.

Some UK comparisons for the Spider-Man franchise:

Spider-Man (2002)
Opening Weekend: $13,926,679
Total box Office: $45,780,340

Spider-Man 2 (2004)
Opening Weekend:
$13,180,732
Total Box Office:
$49,702,580

Spider-Man 3 (2007)
Opening Weekend:
$23,555,095
Total Box Office:
$67,049,819

The Amazing Spider-Man (2012)
Opening Weekend:
$17,184,334 (6 DAY WEEKEND)
Total Box Office:
$40,286,388

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014)
Opening Weekend: $15 million (5 DAY WEEKEND)
Total Box Office: ???

I would struggle to spin this in too positive a light. It's an average debut. I was hoping it would crack $20 million again in the UK.
