For me Man of Steel took itself too seriously. It was pretentious. Some people make that same claim about The Dark Knight but that film is so well written that it earns its gravitas.

And I wouldn't even consider TASM a particularly fun movie. I really like it, but I don't feel like there was quite enough action and playfulness to it. Peter didn't ever get to be happy. The sequel looks like it's going to better balance drama and light-heartedness.

I do find TDK to be a little pretentious (forced metaphors and speeches), and I think it did take itself too seriously. It just happened to be a great movie.

I thought TASM was somewhat fun, but I thought it was a really good movie. It was kind of "small" in scope, so it could only be so adventurous. But the sequel on the other hand.. that looks like its going to be a load of fun. Can't wait!

MOS wasn't that fun(I loved it though). TASM was a fun movie IMO. Every Spidey movie is.

I thought MOS was fun because of its action sequences (though they went to far with them). To me, its just a dumb popcorn film.

I do agree about every spidey film being fun though!

The Avengers is the prototypical fun film. Sitting in a packed house on opening night with everyone laughing and enjoying the tremendous spectacle was one of my favorite theater-going experiences.

Honestly, I don't consider MOS to be that much of a popcorn movie.

Yes. *nods approval*

I wouldn't mind a look at the Rhino soon. I really want to see how that costume turns out.

It's more than likely going to be mechanical. Hopefully they can avoid the Transformers look and go for something different.

Well it's gonna have a horn so that differentiates it immediately. Plus it has Paul Giamatti inside. Last time I checked Optimus Prime was purely robotic, so... :yay:

I dunno. In the trailer Giamatti was driving a large truck... :awesome:

Spider-Man Transformers crossover confirmed!

I actually liked The Rock, and Transformers 1. Bad Boys 2 was fun too.

I just want something huge as Rhino. A bulky threat to Spider-Man.

TDK is a little pretentious, indeed, but in a good way. TDKR is when Nolan went a little overboard with it.

And I agree with you guys about Rachel. Ugh I hated her so much!

Picard, can I ask why you think SM2 is the best comic book film ever?

Technically speaking, Spider-Man 2 has the least "Rotten" reviews on Rotten Tomatoes out of every CBM. For what it's worth, it's something. 94% for a CBM doesn't happen often, it'd tied with TDK as the highest.

TDK earned it. TDKR crossed the line.

Agree with you 100%

Because..... I do? Does that come off as strange to you? Its not like I said SM3 is the best CBM ever. lol

It has the perfect balance of action/adventure, comedy, drama, romance, and even a little horror. Its a movie that, IMO, most realistically portrays what the life of a superhero would be like if one did exist. Not only is this a fantastic Spider-Man movie (or CBM movie in general), its also a great film.

And its not as if I place Spider-Man 2 leagues ahead of TDK or The Avengers... I'd give all three a 9/10. I just happen to like Spider-Man 2 slightly more than those other two.

I hate when people use the word "pretentious" especially when it comes to CBM's. First of all, the word is ENTIRELY subjective. For instance, I found nothing pretentious about any of Nolan's Batfilms. Second, I feel that too many people use that word to try and justify hating a movie, but don't really justify their use of the word.

You sound pretentious by saying that. :o

Or maybe they legitimately find some of the Nolan films pretentious. ;)

It feels like TDK & TDKR over analyze just about everything, and throw in as many metaphors as possible that sound cool when you first hear them, but after a few viewings you start to wonder if they have any real meaning at all.

Wait, we're talking about the very solid, competent script for TDK, not Prometheus, right?

Yeah, I don't see where TDK threw in "as many metaphors as possible." It analyzed specific issues. Also, people still haven't pointed to anything specific that was pretentious in TDK. You can't just throw the word out there and not back up your claim, sorry. Prometheus was pretentious, had some of the most idiotic characters ever seen on screen, and plot holes big enough to drive a starship through.

The only Nolan film in the Batman trilogy I like is Batman Begins, the less said about the rest, the better..

Don't you know? On the internet, anything with aspirations beyond dumb, popcorn fun is pretentious, and everyone with a different opinion is a hipster.

Isn't being part of the lowest common denominator fun?!?!?
