If adjusted for inflation, all 3 of Raimi's Spider-Man films would have made a billion.
Sure, but it also falls on the marketing. The "fun movie with heart" angle they're pushing makes the movie stand out, and it's probably the very thing that's gonna give it legs. Even if the villain overkill ends up being a problem. If they're going for the widest common denominator -the crowd that made the Transformers movie such hits, even if the last two were boring as hell- selling them several cool-looking villains is also smart, because showing them in the trailers is much faster than relying on word-of-mouth.
