The Amazing Spider-Man 2 The Amazing Spider-Man 2 - User Review Thread! - SPOILERS! - Part 5

SO, I had skipped this movie in theaters (which is a big deal for me because I always watch every major superhero film in theaters) due to all the negativity surrounding this movie. Not to mention my love for Spider-man as a character has been on steep decline throughout the last several years. Despite all that thought, I bought this on vudu and just finished watching it for the first time. I gotta say, maybe it was my very, very low expectations and the fact that I already knew what happened in the movie but I actually kinda enjoyed this. DEFINITELY better than the first film.

There's definitely issues with this film and I can see where all the negativity comes from. The writing gets weird sometimes and there are some CHEESY moments, but there are some strong character moments in the film to latch onto and some pretty cool action sequences.

I found there were several moments where the movie was very cheesy but it would almost immediately redeem itself moments afterwards. For example when Harry first appears as the Goblin, I almost face palmed, it was so rushed and Dane Dehaan was chewing the scenery and not in a good way. But moments later they redeem themselves with the build up to Gwen's demise which I thought was well done. Or at the very end of the film when Aleksi appears as the full Rhino, Paul Giammatti's performance is INCREDIBLY bad but, again, mere moments later is redeemed when the little kid dresses up as Spidey and confronts him, unafraid. The film is very schizophrenic.

I'll need to watch this again to fully digest but this movie is not as bad as everyone says. I give it a 7/10 for now.

I can even admit to things getting weird haha but I agree about the strong character moments. So far thats what I've loved about both Webb films. Schizophrenic is a very good analogy btw. A lot of people have been saying the Rhino was really cheesy etc., but I really liked him in the movie. I thought the scenes were hilarious and felt like it was straight from a cartoon. Which I can see why it'd bother people but personally for me I liked it. I have to say, I really liked it more a second viewing. Same for the original TASM.

I loved a Rhino. He was OTT and hammy but it felt liked he stepped right off of a comic page.

His fight with Spidey at the end was probably THE most comic booky moment in film for me. The news report, Rhino being all grandiose and loving the power, Spideys speech on the car it was all just pure Comic Nook for me.

Agreed. It was great when Spidey quipped. It felt like it was straight off a comic book. I liked the way the movie ended. It showed Spider-Man fighting villains outside of the movie.

Rhino is without a doubt one of the worst villains ever to appear in a comic book movie. One of the most embarrassing parts of the movie. Paul Giamatti deserves a Razzie.

Oh, I agree. Despite not being in the film much, I really liked him in both scenes.

I just wish that there was more focus after Gwen's departure before that awesome end scene. That's the only thing that kinda took me out of that great moment.

So I rented this from the Redbox... I kind of feel like I was watching two movies, the movie Webb wanted to make, and the movie Sony wanted him to make. The tonal differences between the two (sweet young adult romance/family drama vs. campy comic book movie) were really jarring, and it was the first time that certain leaps in editing and storytelling were very noticeable for me. I just didn't like Electro's arc at all. Foxx' acting was too OTT for me, cutting in between all the very nice Stone/Garfield/Sally Field stuff. But when he finally joined up with Dane DeHaan's Harry Osborn, I enjoyed Electro more. I just kept wanting to stick with all the nice character moments than watching Spider-Man be Spider-Man :\

That said, I really liked certain parts of this movie better than TASM1, which I'd probably rate a 3.5/10. Garfield and Stone finally had a spark and lovely banter, despite the push-pull of the characters' stories. Garfield had some great, great scenes with Sally Field (I got weepy when Aunt May finally confronted Peter about his dad), and EVERYTHING WITH DANE DEHAAN!! Made me wish they had focused these two movies on Peter's friendship with him. He had fantastic chemistry with Andrew Garfield.

I'm also torn, because on a snarky level, I rather adored Dr. Kafka and the Electro stuff, minus Max Dillion. But on a "fan" level of watching the movie? Neither worked for me. Neither did misusing Paul Giamatti, Chris Cooper or Felicity Jones in their roles.

While I struggle to say whether this is a good movie, there were some really great parts. But the big stuff that didn't work for me may overshadow those slightly.

Hm... I think overall, a 5.5/10.

Oh, and also can Sony just please pony up for ILM or Framestore or Weta to make Spider-Man look good. The overuse of CGI in this really hurt it for me, but then again, that might have something to do with the weird tonal shifts and editing choices. The obvious comic booky effects of the first Spider-Man trilogy don't bother me at all, but the story and tones of at least the first two Raimi films are far more consistent than TASM2.

Paul Giamatti's Rhino belongs to a Saturday Night Live sketch. Just because he is a basic character in the comics, doesn't mean it's gonna work the same way in a movie.

Disappointing on so many levels. I liked the Peter/Gwen scenes, and there were a few other decent moments, but other than that, I did not care much for it at all.

5/10

My brother in law watched it last night, said he really liked it. I told him it was getting a lot of hate online and he didn't get why.

Everyone that I recommended it to and people that went to see it in theaters with me liked it as well.

I know there's people in the GA who don't like it, but it's more disliked by people online on places such as here who analyze it and actually read the comics.

Yeah I don't get why either I have never be so confused before. I didn't hate sm3 like a lot of people but I did see the problems just thought the problems where over blow. With this movie I don't even see the problems people have with the movie. To chessy? What sm1-3 where more chessy.

I would refrain from anymore comparisons if I were you, at least on any TASM threads.

It gets hated online for examples like: Gwen died for the fact that she was the only one who knew how to press the giant red restart button at the power plant to restart the grid. Maybe Peter should have looked that one up on YouTube... How to press a giant red button.

Not why she died tho *shrug*

Despite her being there just to push a button, they were successfull in eliminating electro. Job was done and over with. No one knew goblin was going to attack, and it would have happened anywhere at anytime, despite the situation, and she died for other reasons. She was in the same danger either way because goblin could have swept her up from anywhere and dropped her.

The red button and Gwen dying should be looked at as separate from each other, not the reason why she died. Because it's not the reason why she died.

Unfortunately Chaster is incredibly poor at distinguishing what causes someone's death, hence his signature ;)

Also, the one in Chaseter's sig is from the deleted scene... so, it's not how Uncle Ben died. ;)

Ben died over chocolate milk. Had the clerk been nice about the chocolate milk or Peter had one more penny lolol, Peter would have stopped the robber. Chocolate milk is serious business to Peter Parker and Uncle Ben paid the price. Only in this universe people die over milk and giant red buttons that only intelligent people know how to push.

I don't know if I should laugh or cry.
