The Amazing Spider-Man 2 The Amazing Spider-Man 2 - User Review Thread! - SPOILERS! - Part 5

Right. Sure, people got upset when Sony first announced they were rebooting the franchise, but there was no need to go after Webb just because he was hired as the director. Or for those who do like the reboots to start gaining up on Raimi just because those films are older.

Yeah, that was something I was discussing with the others on the Spider-Man podcast last night. I think that, based on what was rumored about the alternate cuts of Gwen's death, I was very satisfied with what was in the film. That whole sequence (with the exception of the heavy-handed symbolism of the "web hand") involving Gwen's death and funeral and passing of the seasons--best moments of the film bar none.

Well, if you go to the Crawlspace's contact and staff bios, I'm the guy holding a copy of Amazing Spider-Man #394, the one with the foil cover that you have to flip to read the back-up story.

Oh, you're absolutely right. Peter's motivation should never be about his parents but his sense of guilt over Uncle Ben's death. That's why the first film all but cut out the "Untold Story" from the first film.

oh tell me about it. seriously, can yopu imagine someone like kevin smith or maybe even the guys behind breaking bad or mad men were to direct this film and got trashed before they even gotten started? it's really irritating how critics on youtube even people who want to be writers care more for their pride. i can tell you that once webb makes a new film he's gonna get trashed regardless of the evidence-_- and before the reboot wasmade the writers were revealed to be the ones from the harry potter series, zodiac, and even the first spdierman movie. all talented writers and yet the reboot still gets trashed. and people should stop picking on sam. they should come clean already. i know you guys already feel like *******s but really all of you guys really need to step up and apologize and could we just move on already for the love of god?

i really love gwen's death. i can see that the web hand is kinda bothersome to people but i didn't mind it. i'm kinda a big fan of artsy style scenes. but the death istelf briought alot of tension when gears came down almost close to gwen's face while they both were staring into eachother before she got a whiplash.

a guy name Teekay in the forums stated that the goblin fight was much longer and that peter found gwen's note instead of a flash drive.

do you believe we'll be able to get a director's cut this time?

thanks for the picture. for a minute there i thought you looked like your icon.

so jonathan hickman writes a great spiderman and not only that seems to write a mature spiderman and even seems to criticize some of the problems in OMD and dan slott's writing like the speech he gave to franklin about moving on, how he got his new costume, and even seem to mention about getting a new girlfriend which makes us agree that carly is kind of a weak character.

what do you think about brian michael bendis and marcos martin teaming up?

Your lack of complete sentence structure makes your posts awful to read...no offense.

Indeed.

Oh, I liked that as well. And about the gears, that's what I was trying to allude to when I talked about Richard Parker's wristwatch and the "Phony Beenox Logo." It that the film begins with seeing all those clockwork gears and you zoom out to see the face of Richard Parker's wristwatch. And then you have the fact that Gwen's death happens in a clock tower and how the clock face stops at 1:21 or 1:22 (which alludes to the issues of Amazing Spider-Man where she died). Well I thought the face on Richard Parker's wristwatch was a reverse of that time--i.e. 1:41 or 1:42, but I could be wrong.

a guy name Teekay in the forums stated that the goblin fight was much longer and that peter found gwen's note instead of a flash drive.

Yeah, I read that. Personally, I think the video of Gwen's speech on the flash drive worked, too. Although, as someone pointed out, Peter has now heard a recording of both Uncle Ben and Gwen at the end of both films, so whose recorded voice will he hear next? :oldrazz:

do you believe we'll be able to get a director's cut this time?

Oh, there's definitely enough for a director's cut based on what I've heard has been cut and re-shot from the final film.

thanks for the picture. for a minute there i thought you looked like your icon.

:woot: You're the second person to say that.

A Spider-Man story with Bendis on writing and Martin on art would indeed be awesome to see.

Indeed.

i really hope we get a director's cut. we didn't get one in the last film so do you believ we'll get one in this film?

in general i'd like to see bendis and marcos martin teaming up. seriously marcis is beautiful on his artwork and with bendis' manga-like full page splashes it'd be a beaut' to see.

so if marvel does get the rights back and andrew is not casted dop you think dylan o'brian would make a great peter parker/spiderman?

what do you want in your marvel animated universe?

We'll probably get something like what they did with Amazing Spider-Man on DVD/Blu-Ray were they put all the deleted scenes separately. I did just find something on Screen It where the article is mentioning what might have been edited out (spoilers of course):

Oh, I agree. Marcos Martin really knows how to channel that Steve Ditko like style with Spider-Man, no question.

Hmm...I haven't seen Dylan O'Brian act since I don't watch Teen Wolf, so I have withhold judgement on that.

I'd have to think about that a little more. However, remember those Marvel Anime series where we got Iron Man, Wolverine, X-Men, and Blade? I would really like to see Marvel and Madhouse do another Marvel Anime series of shows which would include a Spider-Man Anime. Especially considering how Spider-Man is pretty big in Japan from what I understand.

Saw it tonight, overall it was OK. I wouldn't rate it better than the first one however. But it was still fun. Electro was the highlight for me. Rhino and Green Goblin were underutilized though, hopefully they'll be better next time.

7/10.

No, Marc Webb doesn't deserve the vitriol; nor does Sam Raimi for that matter. Thing is, I do think Webb is a good director; in both films he had a great visual style when it came to the Spider-Man action scenes, and his portrayal of the Peter and Gwen romance, with a few minor quibbles, was by far the best aspect of both films. The downside is that I don't think he's quite learned how to take control of the screenplays he's been given. While I think he was right in taking the Mary Jane scenes out of Amazing Spider-Man 2, there certainly was other things that really didn't add to the film (like say the whole Parents mystery) that was kept in.

Agreed for the most part. I do like Webb a lot, but from what I understand, the whole parents thing was his idea, not something that was forced on him? I could be wrong, but I've heard him talk about how he wanted his movies to be about "not only the origin of Spider-Man, but the origin of Peter Parker". And he's said other stuff along those lines. Again, I could be wrong, but that's the impression I've had this whole time.

Btw, I listened to the Crawlspace's podcast review of TASM... reading your posts I get the feeling that you're the guy that lists the way in which the events of the Raimi movies and TASM could take place in the same timeline? Lol, correct me if I'm wrong. That was funny.

Sadly, the only reason Sony had that garbage in these films was simply to make it a bit different than Raimi's films. I don't know about anyone else but I don't give two ****s about Parker's parents. For me it was all about Uncle Ben and Aunt May.

Oh, frack yes. I feel exactly the same way. Spider-Man is interesting because he's Spider-Man, a regular kid who got bitten by a spider, needs to atone for the death of his beloved uncle and is therefore forced into the role of a hero. Not because of some legacy bullcrap. That whole storyline is the definition of dead weight to me.

Totally awful? Batman & Robin-level bad? No. It's still quite bad though.

I thought the first movie lacked confidence. This one tried to fix that, but ended up with false confidence instead. Too much of everything: characters, plots and styles. Tone is all over the place; between everything from self-seriousness to over-the-top antics – sometimes even in the same scenes.

Small praise: Much of the lighter Spider-Man stuff is quite fun. And there is no denying Garfield's and Stone's charming chemistry (though the romance is so back-and-forth and screams "this is quirky awkwardness!" too much).

Different from the first film, but about as weak.

5/10

I don't want to dissapoint anyone who really LOVED the film, but after the emotional impact has worn off significantly, I'm starting to sympathise with the critics much more, whilst it was an emotional rollercoaster, that rollercoaster was a little defective and not entirely safe to ride on.

I'd probably put my rating down to 7.5/10, but it could go up or down depending on my next viewing on friday

Watching the movie for a 5th time today.
Seriously cannot wait for the blu ray. At least the disappoint BO means I'll get it a month sooner.

Dude:wow: Now ive been hovering all over the place on this board and your comments have been really positive, how many times you seing this now. Why im interested is because your comments have been quite balanced. Was it certain scenes that brought this on, maybe on your next viewing you will try to put aside Pete and Gwen's relationship to see more of the movies background elements.

My opinion hasn't changed one iota and I'm seeing the movie for a CBM record equaling 5th time (tied with SM2).
I why this movie is getting hate but I absolutely loved it and the sea of negativity is doing nothing to change my mind because when I sit down to watch the movie, all of that negativity washes away. I guess I love a movie most people hate, I can live with that.

If I go on friday, 7 times. Now before people freak out, I didn't plan for three of them but I convinced people to go, 2 were family, and then I ducked in after work to see it twice.

Honestly, it's just a lot of stuff crammed into such a small amount of time, and everything feels like it deserved an extra five minutes. Maybe I just had a bad experience the last time, but I just didn't get that feeling of awe that I got previously. Pete and Gwen's scenes are still absolutely beautiful, I won't back down on that. I still feel electro is serviceable and GG is great, Rhino is funny and Kafka doesn't matter. But it just lost its sense of granduer. I think I've over-seen the film, but yeah, at the moment it isn't hitting me as hard and the little "cinema sins" are starting to show. It's really difficult to put into words. Could be the critics getting to me as well

I had a really long review typed out, but I think I've voiced my opinion all around these boards, so I don't want to repeat myself (and thus sounding like a broken record).

If I had to rate this film, it would have to be a 4.5-5/10. Studio interference and the writing are what kill these movies for me. I find that these films have an identity crisis. I don't see these films as labors of love; I see them as big ol' cash grabs, and they aren't even apologetic about it now. It's been a while since I've witnessed a film franchise with such contempt for itself, but here we are.

That said, though, this movie is not without some of its merits. I love the look and the color palette of the film; it's very pleasant to the eye. Also, the web-slinging is the best we've seen in a Spider-Man film thus far, period. And the already-wonderful Spider-Man costume looks even better on film.

I also love Andrew Garfield when he's Spider-Man, doing Spider-Man things. Saving a kid from bullies? Helping firemen take down Electro while wearing a hat? Some of the quips (like "A god called Sparkles?")? Love all that stuff. I still really dislike Garfield as Peter Parker, though. The accent was over-the-top in this movie; Peter was loud and obnoxious. I felt that Peter was an ugly caricature of a New Yorker in this film, and I was just annoyed by him. Oddly enough, I felt that Garfield's performance was much more nuanced and subtle once he put the spandex and the mask on. Go figure. It's obvious to me that Andrew Garfield feels much more comfortable as Spider-Man. Unfortunately, Spidey himself isn't enough to save the movie for me.

I will say this though: A standout part of the movie for me was the whole dynamic between Electro and Spider-Man's webshooters. I don't like that Gwen solved the issue for him (I don't think these movies show enough of Peter's scientific prowess), but I do love that they created an interesting and really cool plot point with his webshooters. Again, I'm complimenting parts of the movie that deal with Spider-Man doing Spider-Man things. :)

I just feel kind of "done" with these movies. I'm really not interested in seeing any future Spider-Man movies right now. I told myself that I wasn't going to see TASM2 in theaters, but I had an opportunity to go to an early screening a week ago, and I took it. For TASM3 (and the spinoffs), I definitely plan on skipping. Thanks but no thanks, Sony.

I'm not excited for ASM3 but that is because I think S6 will ruin the movie and Gwen (one of my favorite characters) is no more. Nothing to do with ASM2 as I absolutely loved it.

I just think it's dumb that they're not making dr kafka a main villian and it is going to be hard to recover

This baffles me. Who the hell lets their opinion be swayed so much after loving the film? You're starting to sound like a troll with this and your Kafka comments.

i liked TASM2, but i´m not looking forward to TASM3 :csad: now that i know how the "writters" did this one and the fact that they are rushing it for Sinister six

I think he's taking the piss. He went from being one of the films biggest defenders to saying "Eh, all the critics are getting to me. It's not very good anymore."

I've never ONCE seen a reaction like that from anybody anywhere for a film.

You keep bringing up the "writers", but i haven't seen you elaborating on that one all that much. I think they did a good job on balancing the elements in the film and Matt Tolmach mentioned that the script was huge. That probably means that a lot of stuff were cut that might have made the movie more cohesive. But, that's how films work, especially these blockbuster movies. You can't have everything. There were of course some lines here and there that could have been cut, but i think they did a solid job.

the marvel animes suck. at least keep spidey good.

what i want from a marvel animated universe is to have the same tone as the comics, and the justice league animated series even young justice. i want some kevin conroy voice actors to reprise their roles like josh keaton as spiderman, brian bloom as captain america, eric loomis as iron man, chris cox as hawkeye, grey delisle as wasp, wally wingert as ant man, rick d wasserman as thor, and charles adler as the super skrull.

will friedle can play spiderman in the marvelo adventures universe.

you should totally watch teen wolf. it's not like those hoaky dramas like twilight or the notebook

If I liked a movie and everyone told me it was rubbish/good, it would give me pause but after watching it again if my opinion was the same I'd pretty much ignore outside influences. I've seen too many movies that are lauded that I dislike and too many movies that are trashed that I like.
Movies are completely subjective.

All true. I guess he could have burnt himself out to quickly with the film.

I did that with the first Raimi film. I adored it. I saw it 5 times in the theater, had a...uh, advance home copy:woot:.....would watch that repeatedly, got the DVD the first day it came out and watched the hell out of that too. I must have watched that movie between 2002 and 2004 (when the second came out) upwards of 50 times. No joke. After I was disappointed in the second I maybe watched it once or twice before Spider-Man 3 and after that debacle I kind of forgot about it and let it slip by the way side and dismissed it. I hadn't watched it in years and decided to give it a go after I enjoyed the reboot and discovered how much I still love the film.
