That's certainly TASM2's best hope, though it's debatable how well TASM will do on home video. Although it made far more money than BB thanks to the Spider-Man brand, I daresay word of mouth was generally stronger for BB. We'll see.

TASM2 needs a much better villain and a much stronger marketing campaign. If it doesn't have a big increase from TASM then the reboot was a waste of time (maintaining the rights notwithstanding).

The general audience score for ASM is 87% on Rotten tomato so you'd hope word of mouth for ASM would be good.

Excuse me?

Did Batman Begins make over 300 m in pure profit?

Did Star Trek?

Did Casino Royale?

Face it...ASM will be one of the most successful reboots in history. It should help reverse the steady decline of the Spider-man franchise in the domestic market. ASM2's prospects are far better than SM5's would've ever been.

This movie ain't making $300 million in pure profit from its theatrical run so I have no idea where you got that from...

Bond and Star Trek are no where near as popular as Batman or Spider-Man so that's a straw man comparison. But...oddly enough...Star Trek looks like it will beat ASM domestic.

It is a successful reboot. It will make a profit....albeit a mediocre one. If it made $1 profit at the end of the day then it was a success. Should help reverse the steady decline of Spider-Man's box office? No...it continued the steady decline of Spider-Man's box office. At the end of the day, this movie will make a profit. We will get a sequel. But...it could have made a lot more money had Sony not f-ed up.

SM2 made 30M less than SM1 domestically despite increasing the budget by 70M,increased ticket prises and being better received critically
Why didnt sony panic then? By your logic they should

Thanks for bringing that out because that's exactly when Raimi lost creative control over it's franchise.

This is the only point I will further adress because the rest of your messages sound like you're trying to start an argument over things you obviously don't understand. Then again do the maths and please don't trust any information that you get from a studio. That's PR BS at it's best, I mean if you have to believe every statement issued, WB was happy with GL's revenues, and that makes no sense at all.

If Sony spent 360 millions to make and promote this movie it's because they expected some profits out of this investment (the again it's just business logic wich you apparently fail to understand, nothing groundbreaking). Numbers show that they probably won't make any profit out of TASM's theatrical run and that they even may lose some money.

But in the end, if you think they're off to an amazing start with the franchise despite barely positive reviews and mixed results at the box office, whatever works for you man.

This will be the first Spider-man film that wasn't no. 1 at the box office for at least two weeks. That's pretty sad in and of itself.

ok this isn't a thread for discussing the parts of the film or Webb vs Raimi...its for discussing the BO.....double the BO and add the marketing and thats where a movie starts to make money. This isn't some new formula that people came up with to hate on this movie...this has always been the case.

This entire summer has been kind of meh in regards to massive hits, aside from Avengers and honestly, Ted. Everything has either underperformed or performed about with what we expected.

TDKR probably won't beat Avengers' opening weekend, but it might be able to sell more tickets.

Ice Age is expected to take the weekend with 50M although Fox is predicting 38M-40M
Spider-man is expected to come in at number 2

It still hasn't dropped from #1, and I wouldn't say that Ice Age is going to be a guaranteed #1 box office hit. Pretty sure that kids enjoy Spider-Man more than Ice Age usually.

Ice Age is tracking at # 1 though.

Oh well.

its expected to make about 50M this weekend

Meh, it almost reached 2 weeks.

I wonder what Sony was thinking releasing the film at this time?

they were thinking they'd get a nice bump from the 4th of july...honestly i would have pushed it back to give it more time

Yeah August would have been a good time there are hardly any movies coming out besides Bourne

Where was the mid/late June tentpole this year? Brave?

I would have went mid June. Then again, that wouldn't work with MIB III in house. That's why they needed separation.

This was supposed to be Sony's year. Instead, Disney and WB are pulling way ahead of them.

I think a week or 2 earlier in June would have been good. July 4th weekend isn't the bonanza people think it is, early May (Avenger's slot) is much more lucrative.

August or any time after TDKR would be ill advised, as there would be the unavoidable comparisons of 2 comic juggernauts releasing just months before. Ideally ASM would have maybe come out last winter holiday to be first out of the gate, or mid to late June for a little more separation from TDKR.

As for Sony's boxoffice performance, they're doing great. Will be close to clearing $1 billion domestic by the end of ASM's run. They still have a few big films coming out this year, including Total recall and Sky Fall. WB is having a bad year as far as I can tell, with no Harry Potter to float their boat. Disney's major hit is Avengers, but other than that they haven't had such a great year either with John Carter. I still think it very well can be Sony's year:

Total Recall is Sony? Well, they can kiss goodbye any profit they made from TASM then.
