For ****'s sake, it is a reboot. Even Sony Pictures twitted about it when they announced the cancellation of Spider-Man 4, back in Jan/2010.

[Update 1: Sony Pictures Tweeted that the reboot will see Peter Parker back in High School and that the film will come in 2012 as opposed to Spider-Man 4's May 2011 planned release date]

[Update 2: Sony put put their official press release on the matter - See below]

Culver City, CA (January 11, 2010) — Peter Parker is going back to high school when the next Spider-Man hits theaters in the summer of 2012. Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios announced today they are moving forward with a film based on a script by James Vanderbilt that focuses on a teenager grappling with both contemporary human problems and amazing super-human crises.

The new chapter in the Spider-Man franchise produced by Columbia, Marvel Studios and Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin, will have a new cast and filmmaking team. Spider-Man 4 was to have been released in 2011, but had not yet gone into production.

“A decade ago we set out on this journey with Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire and together we made three Spider-Man films that set a new bar for the genre. When we began, no one ever imagined that we would make history at the box-office and now we have a rare opportunity to make history once again with this franchise. Peter Parker as an ordinary young adult grappling with extraordinary powers has always been the foundation that has made this character so timeless and compelling for generations of fans. We’re very excited about the creative possibilities that come from returning to Peter’s roots and we look forward to working once again with Marvel Studios, Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin on this new beginning,” said Amy Pascal, co-chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment.

“Working on the Spider-Man movies was the experience of a lifetime for me. While we were looking forward to doing a fourth one together, the studio and Marvel have a unique opportunity to take the franchise in a new direction, and I know they will do a terrific job,” said Sam Raimi.

“We have had a once-in-a-lifetime collaboration and friendship with Sam and Tobey and they have given us their best for the better part of the last decade. This is a bittersweet moment for us because while it is hard to imagine Spider-Man in anyone else’s hands, I know that this was a day that was inevitable,” said Matt Tolmach, president of Columbia Pictures, who has served as the studio’s chief production executive since the beginning of the franchise. “Now everything begins anew, and that’s got us all tremendously excited about what comes next. Under the continuing supervision of Avi and Laura, we have a clear vision for the future of Spider-Man and can’t wait to share this exciting new direction with audiences in 2012.”

“Spider-Man will always be an important franchise for Sony Pictures and a fresh start like this is a responsibility that we all take very seriously,” said Michael Lynton, Chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures. “We have always believed that story comes first and story guides the direction of these films and as we move onto the next chapter, we will stay true to that principle and will do so with the highest respect for the source material and the fans and moviegoers who deserve nothing but the best when it comes to bringing these stories and characters to life on the big screen.”

The studio will have more news about Spider-Man in 2012 in the coming weeks as it prepares for production of the film.

pretty much

it's a Raim-boot....see...what...I...did there? I just took the first four letters of Raimi and put "boot" at the end...because it was stated that it might not actually be a reboot :awesome:

jk btw

I guess nothing changed between January 2010 and when they began shooting in December 2010 even though we kept hearing word of different writers coming into 'polish' the script, Bendis being on board and then off board, Peter in college then Peter in HS then Peter in college again and then in HS again???

Wait...are people still clinging to the hope that this isn't a reboot? Why? How?

We can ignore Avi Arad like his comments never happened and continue to live

I don't know of anyone begging for that per say. I just noticed that blurb in the Entertainment Weekly issue, found it interesting and threw up the whole quote in an article.

Arad could be blowing smoke, out of his mind or EW misinterpreted what he said.

This isn't a sequel, I think that is obvious. But I always thought they wouldn't completely nullify what came before and totally reboot a well received franchise where we would see the same villains that were in a movie a decade ago.

I think Avi Arad is just pulling **** out of his ass. It wouldn't make much sense if the film was to take place in between Raimi's films. Based on the possible facts, if Webb's film is taking place in High School, then Peter would have battled with Lizard(assuming he's the villian) in between the start of the first film to midway through the first film(since he graduated).

Then you have the web shooters debate.

No Mary Jane or Harry.

It's a reboot.

Pretty sure you're not allowed to use that .gif.

I dunno, maybe Avi is trying to please the fans who may still be peeved about the reboot by telling them ,"If you don't like the idea of a reboot, you can always look at it as a sequel of sorts". It sounds like more PR then anything else.

Otherwise , I can't think of why he would claim the film isn't a reboot when everyone who's making the film clearly knows it is.

Screw the whiners that don't like the idea of a reboot. It's happening. It can't be changed. Learn to like it or learn to invest the time spent complaining on it on something more productive.

It's clearly a reboot at this point. Avi is going to catch himself in a lie. He's basically saying these films won't tread over past storylines but I highly doubt that.

This is obviously only a reboot...gwen...young captain Stacy...back in high school...idk how you could weave this

Yeah, if this wouldn't be a reboot, why would Peter go back to high school? Maybe he wants to raise his grades :awesome:?

Yeah this movie defintely doesn't feel like a First Class situation where its half a reboot/prequel.

Everything we know about it indicates it's a full reboot. There isn't even room for loosely trying to make it fit in with the Raimi series.

Avi is just talking out of his ass. There are so many things that indicate it's a reboot.

Exactly.

This is another case of Avi Arad being Avi Arad.

Along with nothing else correlating with the Raimi series in the least.
