I guess it's too much to hope that they kill of Carlie Cooper

Hm, I didn't see the MJ thing as overreacting or pre hating (I'm actually liking most of what's going on). I mean, it's a message board, if it wasn't for the letters bit that seemed to cast a target on MJ I wouldn't have had the reaction I had or speculated. I'd still be thinking about Brock potentially kicking the bucket.

Just don't do it Dan! :argh: Or....or...I'll cry! Trust me, there's nothing more sad and uncomfortable than a big black Canadian dude in a makeshift Anti Venom costume crying on your porch holding a "Remember Brock" placard. :o

Uhhh...really, dude?

I'm...I'm a bit insane...that's my defense. :woot: ....*hides head in shame*

Dear God, man! STOP! WHEN (outside of the times when future solicits SPOON-FED you the answers) have you EVER been right about ANY of your ASM predictions? Your track record on this is HORRIBLE.

People, this is a guy who steadfastly predicted Jay Jameson's death from his arrival in the book-- almost 100 issues ago-- that he would die "next issue." (Still waiting on that, ain't ya?:woot:).

Big finger wag to ANYBODY here who takes ANY of stillanerd's predictions to heart. Seriously, I wag my finger at you.
And WORLD'S BIGGEST EYE-ROLL at someone who uses stillanerd's predictions to PRE-HATE the book for SOMETHING WE WIND UP NOT DOING. (I'm looking at you spideyboy_1111, ya big Pre-Hater.)

Jeez.

Hmmm.... Me thinks thou doth protest too much. Maybe you simply fear that stillanerd is on to something, and that eventually he will unlock your trove of secrets and knowledge of future events for all the world to see.

I imagine it'll have an effect much like the Ark in Indian Jones, with the melting of the faces and whatnot.

:woot:

Yes. That's it. Because the 1st 250 times he's come soooooooooo close.:oldrazz:

Seriously, after 4 years, it boils down to this: I am so f'ing sick of this pattern:
1. Mike posts a bizarre theory of something we're NEVER GOING TO DO.
And then people talk about how awful the book is GOING to be, when we do that that thing-- that we're NEVER GOING TO DO.
2. Eventually, after a few pages of this crap, the message gets muddled and people start actually BELIEVING we're going to do the thing that we're NEVER GOING TO DO.
3. And then Mike runs around the web like Paul-Frickin'-Revere posting his theory on multiple boards-- so the idea pollinates-- and people from ONE board use the fact that since people are talking about it on ANOTHER board-- it MUST be true. OY VEY!

4 years of this.

Seriously.

Mike has a gift for this.

I just wish he'd leave that gift wrapped and tucked away in the back of a closet. :oldrazz:

Dan...

MTU #55... the last page.

Do it. Your love of MTU & continuity & Bill Mantlo just screams at you wanting to do it.

Actually, I said I thought he was going to die in issue #600 before his wedding to Aunt May. How was I supposed to know you'd be crazy enough to actually go through with Aunt May getting married? And yes, still waiting for 'ol Jay to join Uncle Ben, Captain Stacy, and Nathan Lubensky's Poker game in Heaven...but I probably have a pretty long wait, don't I? :o :cwink:

Ummm, so what? Isn't part of the fun of reading any fiction guessing what may come next? If he's wrong he's wrong which would be the probable case for any work of fiction. I love game of thrones and I'm often wondering what will happen next. Most of my predictions are way off but part of the fun is seeing what really happens. (I do have a good one I'm fairly certain of though that seems to be coming true which is cool)

You're acting like someone's predictions are going to hurt your book or something which is just silly and without basis. If he's wrong then just show him in the story. People will only be more interested with added controversy. As long as a bad (story wise, prediction doesn't come through) then it only shows just how well you covered your true agenda. But to call someone out on their guesses especially someone that will readily admit when they've been wrong is just small. Bottom line if your skin's so thin that someone guessing where your story might go offends you enough that you have to call him out in this way (which is pretty childish considering he didn't say something like "If Dan Slott's THOUGHTS are gifts then I just wish he leave that gift wrapped and tucked away in the back of the closet" then perhaps them internets are not the place for you. Cause everyone (even you) are going to guess and hypothesize on what's going to happen in stories they're reading. If you don't like that try your hand at nonfiction.

I don't think the issue is simply "guessing what comes next"... but more the fact that when people present their "guesses", and then people jump all over the board thinking these "guesses" are fact, then go on and on and on and on and on an on and on ad nauseum about how these "facts" (based on guesses) are going to ruin the book at all the haters come in and join the blood frenzy.

If you go back a few pages when all the "guesses" began, you see how it quickly (and ridiculously) turns from mere guessing to full blown attacks and hate towards the book.

I just read the book, and I'm pretty annoyed with it.

:yay:

I would like to point out that before One More Day "Spider-Man Selling his marriage to Mephisto" counted as a stupid thing that I though Marvel would never do.

I don't want to bring up that whole argument again, and I agree that the OMD/BND arguments have gotten to the point where the dead horse has been reduced to subatomic particles from all the beating it's taken, but I am pointing out that previous mistakes made by Marvel, make it easier to believe ridiculous claims.

So people assume the hypothesises are fact and that's what he's angry about? Then he should really be calling those people out shouldn't he? I mean SAN isn't saying this is what's going to happen he clearly is saying this is what I THINK will happen. So Dan is upset that people are misreading SAN's posts?

Isn't part of the fun of fiction guessing what will happen, how it will turn out, and then debating whether it would be a good or bad outcome? Reverse the situation and say someone was guessing an outcome that was very positively thought of by most everyone and they were going on and on about how great that would be. Would dan also be upset with that? Would you? If the answer is no (and we all know that is the answer) than it's hypocritical to be upset by the converse isn't it?

I looked over the posts and most everyone was saying something like "if MJ dies, that would just be stupid and I'd hate it". They are basing thoughts of guesses and that is part of the fun of fiction. They were also basing these guesses on easter eggs laid in the letters pages of the book itself.

Here let me show you how this all could have been done in a way that shows both class, tact and doesn't condescend:

Oh, Mike, Mike, Mikey boy. You're always making these predictions and they never turn out to be accurate. But it is fun to see just how far off base your thoughts take you. Read the book, based on what you think, I think you and everyone else here scared I'm going to murder MJ after turning her into Venom of course, cause that's what I do) really are. I think and hope you're going to enjoy the ride.

^These are not Dan Slott's words just an example of how he could have handled a situation he dubbed as inflammatory in a way that showed a touch of class.

I don't really care how the outcome was handled, but as far as I am concerned, I am annoyed when the can of spray hate comes out... it goes beyond fun debates on a possible outcome, which I agree, used to be a LOT more fun before the internets.

But as far as how peopel conduct themselves on this board... that's a ship that has long sailed... :o

You're annoyed by anything saying anything negative about ASM ever. You enjoy any positive comments about it.

Personally I like them internets and the debates that come out (why I'm here) they let you communicate ideas thoughts and feelings across national boundries with others. They can get carried away, but that too can be a lot of fun. If you don't like it, then really staying away from these boards would be your best bet.

The problem is, Dan Slott, just demonstrated that he too is one of those people that is capable of conducting himself in a childish and hypocritical manner.

Again, if this was an incorrect theory, that everyone was saying would be awesome and how much they would love to see it in ASM Dan and you wouldn't be complaining. You're being upset by people's theories and reactions to theories and only when those are not the reactions you like.

I like the book, so why wouldn't I enjoy "positive" comments?

An I've not liked everything since BND... and those recent FF team-ups in ASM were boring in my opinion (and those were just off the top of my head)... and people are definitely entitled to a negative opinion about anything that goes on in any book....however, when the haters (and you know who they are... people who dropped the book 3 years ago but yet look for any excuse to make their hatred of JQ and Marvel to voice there prosaic "Marvel sucks!!!" opinion yet again) just get pissed about something that isn't real, it's stupid an annoying. Bring something new to the table people. We know you hate the current Marvel admin for what they've done to "your" precious childhood idol (even though some people like the nw direction of "their" childhood idol), but if your just going to post repetitive angst that we've all heard before, then go to Spider-Man Crawl Space instead.

But I certainly don't get annoyed by a well crafted negative opinion. In fact, I like them because it enables me to see something from a differing point of view. I just wish I could read such an opinionmore often. :whatever:

Internets debates are indeed quite fun. Let me know when an actual debate pops up in this thread. Perhaps one that doesn't involve Venom/Flash/Eddy Brock (that's the last one that I can remember that actually has some decent discourse in it)

If you think that the "hate" comments that followed the specualtion of MJ's demise to be actual debate worthy (my apologies to the one or two people that might have actually said anything worthwhile), then you need an english lesson to understand what a debate actually is.

The problem is, Dan Slott, just demonstrated that he too is one of those people that is capable of conducting himself in a childish and hypocritical manner.

How Dan Slott represents himself here (or anywhere for that matter) is irrelevant to me. However, if you think he's conducting himself ina childish and hypocritical manner, maybe it's because he feels the need to stoop that low so that the people he responds to understand what he's saying. I don't think it's fair that he has to subject himself to some invisible "professional standard" while the rest of us just poops on him... if people are allowed to sling feces where they want, then it's only fair that the person on the receiving end gets to fling it back... tit for tat.

Again, if this was an incorrect theory, that everyone was saying would be awesome and how much they would love to see it in ASM Dan and you wouldn't be complaining. You're being upset by people's theories and reactions to theories and only when those are not the reactions you like.

I couod care less about SaN's theory about MJ dying... it was interesting to read, but until such an event sees print, I'll believe it when I see it.

I'm 44 years old... I never get upset by anyone's opinion on anything because I have learned a loooong time ago that people's opinions are just that.... opinions. And SaN's theory was interesting when I read it... I usually find most of his theories interesting... but they are what they are.... theories. Nothing more, nothing less. I am getting a kick out of your goading, but I have expected nothing less from you over the years.

In any event, you can say what you want, but it doesn't make it any more valid than anything I say. However, if you want to keep this "debate" going, keep it clean and I'll play with you for a long time.

Cheers.

Mike

It's just the double standard, you can enjoy what you wish. Just remember we are talking about theories not the book itself and therein lies an obvious difference.

People are just as entitled to be haters as they are to be ass kissers. Again we are talking about people's feelings and opinions. I would say the problem with your something new to the table thoughts are that the "haters" as you call them are upset because marvel isn't allowing anything new to be brought to the table, they'll just reset everything. If they were doing something you absolutely hated and completely disagreed with that you thought ruined "your" childhood hero you'd be just as upset, don't deny it. You're only ok with things cause you like the status quo maintained.

It isn't well crafted negative opinion, it was a theory that was put out and what people thought of that theory. It wasn't even opinion of the book itself it was opinion of a theory that turned out incorrect. Aren't you getting a touch defensive if an incorrect theory and the opinions on the incorrect theory are upsetting you?

How anyone chooses to represent themselves is a direct statement to who they are and who they choose to be to someone else. I greatly respect anyone that can give me a good debate, moreso if they can do it in a glib and sarcastic manner since that's kinda my thing. But if you're being a little child expect to be called out on it. He was, he got called on it. Bad argument, whiny, small. That's how it came off and he was trying to put someone in their place not with argument (which I'm all for) but by just talking down to them and telling them to go away. I'm not saying he needs to be at some standard different just the same as any of us. If you act like a child and give no argument then I will call you on it. If I do the same I expect to be called on it. So if dan slott does it guess what he gets? No more, no less.

See now that's the right, or at least fair, way to take any theory despite any reaction it may receive.

Now that's a lie. Everyone, I mean everyone, get's upset by other people's opinion from time to time. You, me and apparently dan slott as well. Opinions of others matter, no one is above that. It's how you handle that when someone says something that bothers you that shows your character.

Goading? Me? Never. I just speak the truth in an eloquent, charming and awesome way. If you feel the need to respond to any counter point, well that just speaks to your excellent taste in debate partners.
