The Avengers The Avengers Critics Reviews Thread - Part 2

Didn't someone in this forum reported that Ebert likes this movie and is giving it a B+? Since LA Times loves TA, I hope their East Coast brethren would like it as well.

I think that was a false alarm.

That was truly hilarious!

AO Scott liked Captain America. He didn't like Thor. Which of course seems to be the trend for critics. He could go either way on Avengers. I expect a barely positive review.

I expect the guy from the Wall Street Journal to hate this movie. Other than that, I don't think there are any obvious Top Critics that are guaranteed to hate Avengers.

I wouldn't be surprised if A.O. Scott likes the movie... In fact, he's one of the reviewers I trust the most and since I haven't seen the movie I really hope he comes out with a positive review. He positively gushed over Spider-Man 2, which I still hold as the gold standard of Super Hero Films (at least on the Marvel side).

I think he was a little hard on Thor, but also a little easy on Captain America (both films were decent but had their share of flaws). I love that they nailed how likable Cap is (and holy Hayley Atwell!! Gulp!), but I really hated how they chickened out on Red Skull's Nazism and though Weaving is great, he couldn't quite lift Skull out of Generic Villain territory. Also The Howling Commandos came off as goofy and the action scene that led to Bucky's death was a missed opportunity of titanic proportions. Scott gave all this a pass because he liked the overall gee-whiz, fun tone of the film.

So far almost everyone seems to agree that the casting, characterization, humor and action of 'Avengers' is on point, with some plot holes balanced by a contagious fondness for the source material. Sounds like a good time at the movies so far!

I agree completely with AO Scott's assessment of Captain America. But keep in mind that CA and IM are much much lower on the "superhero silliness" scale than a Norse God and a Hulk. Dont get your hopes up.

I really don't expect A.O. Scott to like this. This movie is essentially the root of the problems he had with the other films ("the only purpose of this film is to get you to see the next one!"), and it ends with yet another promise of more to come. He's sick of this stuff. CA:TFA only got to him because of how charmingly earnest and old-fashioned it was. I predict his verdict on this to be a slightly less snobby version of the Village Voice's.

Doesn't look like Eric Alt's a top reviewer, but he is on RT.

Would be nice if it can stay above 90% & 8/10 but it really doesn't matter. I would definitely have taken anything close to that if you'd asked me a few weeks ago.

Armond White has returned!!

His reviews are liike the kiss of death, ONLY IN REVERSE!!

We can all relax now.
I was kinda waiting...and hoping that he hated it. That the best thing a movie can have going for it. Heck...put it on the movie poster, "Armond Whites hates this movie!"
LOL, he post edited his piece to say "barely a cameo in LAST YEAR's Iron Man 2"

Holy cow! we entered a worm hole!
That's interesting...I thought he made mistakes on purpose to cement his "King of Trolls" status. If he is correcting things...that means the other stuff is really him being stupid? :wow:

It's at 86% with top critics. Hoping it goes back up soon with more reviews. Don't care either way. Just it would be awesome.

Exactly what I hoped. Great review!!

He gave IM1 three stars, so makes sense.

And a long string of positive reviews has bumped up the RT score to 94%, for those interested.

I thought Ebert gave Iron Man 4/4?

I read that Armond review, it was so funny

A lot of what he says I agree with, but I would not give it a rotten like he clearly is/has

Sucker Punch is an under rated movie in my opinion, so are all Snyder's films

That is why I am so looking forward to Man of Steel so much, because I rate Snyder highly, plus Nolan is involved with it too, so I think it is gonna be epic

Yep, just as I suspected, that Colorado review was indeed Ebert. And also as I suspected, a 3-star review. Works for me.

And yay, Avengers has officially won the hearts of all 3 of my favorite critics (Berardinelli, Travers and Turan)!

Yeah, I'm glad Ebert liked it, but that was barely a review. Blah blah superhero films bore me blah blah plot summary blah blah it's well made, though. Three stars, done (three stars is also what he gave Serenity and Cabin in the Woods... you'll get that 4th star one day, Joss).

The Turan and Morris reviews are my favorites so far. Two smart critics and great writers who both totally get the film.

I thought Ebert gave Iron Man 4/4?

He did, though there is another link on his site to a review by editor Jim Emerson that has at the top showing Ebert giving it 3 stars, which is odd, but still, says 4 on the main review page.
