It'd be a great way to allude to the shady, hidden agenda side of Fury as well, if at the end they imply that Fury KNEW all the aliens wanted was the cube but didn't want to give it up, and engineered the Avengers so as to be able to keep the cube.
Imagine a menacing, half friendly half hostile confrontation between Cap and fury at the end, where Steve suspects Fury had hidden motives. I mean, Tony or Steve would give up the cube in a heartbeat, I reckon, to save the entire planet.
Wouldn't that draw criticism towards the Avengers though and somewhat, lower the importance of their formation in the first place? I mean if they just got together simply because Fury wanted a powerful team to go up against an alien race that he didn't want to give the cube to, then that could potentially draw criticism and lessen the heroism of the team even.
