Exactly, I can see why someone might not think he's amazing but how can introducing an unassuming character like Coulson be a massive negative to the MU?

Because they're not using him to enhance the comics. They're only using him as a prop to make more money. He's being exploited, and nothing more.

They're not even putting him in a major book. I haven't even heard of this series he's appearing in, and I'm a weekly regular at the comic shop.

I didn't say having the character was the worst idea ever. Putting him in 616 is.

Coulson is the face/name of the MCU. As much as I don't understand why, he's become one of the most popular aspects of movie continuity. Putting him in 616 takes that specialness away from him. He's being ****ed out to the sell more comic books. Even a character I'm not that fond of doesn't deserve that.
I know what you meant and my comment stands. I can certainly understand that some find it to be a bad idea, but you took it a lot further than that.

I would think people would be more upset about them probably killing off actual Nick Fury so that Marcus "Nick" Fury could take on a starring role in the Marvel Universe

why not coulson rather than some nameless or lesser known shield agent. irrespective he's already been branched out to animation before.

Because he's a distinctive, defining characteristic of the movie continuity. Bleeding him into the comics make the continuity even more indistinguishable, which has been slowly happening over the past several years. I don't like that.

it was obviously a hyperbole. I don't actually think it's the worst idea ever. :whatever:

edit:

yeah, that's ****ing stupid too.

So you're talking to Marvel fans rather than the general audience who won't be following this up in comic books. I bet most of the Marvel fans will be fine with the idea. At the very worst he won't have a big negative impact, it's his nature to be effective without getting in the way of the more important stuff.

Also comic books...every character that can be ****ed out to any extent has been done so x10000. Kill them bring them back 5 times, do whatever necessary to sell books. That's how it's always been.

First time I'm hearing of that series as well.

Coulson, as an original character, really isn't that incredibly special. He plays a very safe, predictable role that doesn't really demand much from him. He has his moments, don't get me wrong. I think I liked him best in IM2, he had some pretty funny lines. But that's really all I've ever seen him as. Comedic relief. A lot of people seem to make him out to be way more than what he actually is. I haven't seen this bad@$$ super secret agent everyone else seems to make him out as.

Yeah but this could be just the start. Nothing to stop him being in SHIELD related comics of the future.

And I disagree on not enhancing the comics. I think they can make a deeper character based on the film version which itself is just a template really for a senior SHIELD agent.

And my point wasn't to be taken literally either but as a comment on that nuanced points are gotten across better. But enough about that, it's not relevant to the topic of the thread.

Personally I'm kind of neutral. I really like the character in the MCU but it remains to be seen if that essence will be captured in comic form.

You think Coulson is being "exploited" and "****ed out"? He's a popular character who has appeared in four blockbuster movies and a cartoon series. His being used to promote the brand is par for the course. I don't decry Coulson's "exploitation", rather I embrace the fact that his value as a character is being recognized by Marvel. It's a good thing, as far as I'm concerned.

I hope that they will exploit Coulson with an action figure next. It's the least they can do.

what do you think of harley quinn?

I think eventually, he can enhance the comics. But it's pretty clearly not the case in his first appearance. It's Marvel saying "Hey look, you like this guy in the movies, so give us more money to read him in this ****** book that nobody really cares about!"

I knew it was a matter of time before he showed up in the comics. I just think the movie continuity should be kept clearly different from the comic continuity, and Coulson was one of the things that made the MCU so distinctive.

I had the same problem with Harley Quinn coming into comic continuity. But the way she was introduced seemed much more natural than this. And certainly more honest. She debuted in a one shot specifically named after her. Not in an unheard of mini series.

Harley ended up standing the test of time. Comic book Coulson could, too.

Well I agree with that. It's not really a big issue though mate :woot: & it will set the foundation for him to be used more meaningfully in future comics or to die a death if he doesn't work out.

Like Harley Quinn, I think Agent Coulson has alot of protential as well, if Marvel will actually expands his character far behind what MCU did for him. I'd like to see him interacting with the 616 Fury & Hill in the SHIELD HQ, and doing field assignment supporting the Avengers.

Coulson is awesome in the Ultimate Spider-Man show, pleased to see he's apart of the 616 now.

I'm pleased Coulson finally made it to the comics. He's a fun character.

So Samuel Jackson is now white 616 Fury's long lost son ;) .

convenient, isn't it? :whatever:

Yeah, isn't it great how it all works out? Nick Fury in the 616 universe is actually old enough to be Sam Jackson's father, which is just an added bit of authenticity. Interesting that both father and son lost their left eyes. It's like inherited karma or something. :awesome:

Just saw Avengers. It fulfilled me in every way possible. Amazing! Who knew Hulk would end up being in some of my favourite scenes? Ruffalol was great!
