Not to mention the absolutely ludicrous treatment of Darwin in X-Men First Class. I love that movie but there aren't many scenes in CBM's that i hate more than that death scene.

I hate that whole segment of the movie ..... especially when they're sitting around naming each other. I cringed.

Love me some Watchmen. When I want emotional depth and layered social commentary in a CBM, that's my go-to. Nothing gets me more than when Rorshach yells at Oz to end his life.

I like DOFP more than Avengers.

Days of Future Past for sure. As awe-inspiring and iconic as it is seeing Marvel's superhero films connect in one cohesive on-screen universe, X-men has gravitas through the actors' fantastic performances - particularly James McAvoy. Also, the series is riddled with social commentary and that continues in DOFP. It has a certain emotional core that is not present in The Avengers and I can't connect to any character arcs on an emotional level in the Marvel Studios films. With that said, both are great films, but DOFP is perhaps the best comic book film since The Dark Knight.

Finally someone understands lol

Watchmen is awesome, definitely in my top 5 overall Superhero movies

I picked X-Men: Days of Future Past but I'm also an X-Men fan so my opinion may be biased. I loved The Avengers but I haven't watched it since my initial viewing in the theaters and I own it on blu-ray.

The story just wasn't meaty enough for me - it's all about the spectacle, set-pieces, joy and action with very little emotional punch or storytelling. Even the one emotional moment they immediately retconned in Agents of SHIELD.

DOFP is the epitome of diversity for the sake of it. Storm, Bishop, Blink, Sunspot, and Warpath are all disposable with no depth and characterization. All the important characters who drive the plot are white. It's ironic that you discount Fury, when he's practically far more developed as a character and hold greater importance not just to his film but also to his universe than any of the characters you mentioned.

This.
My instant reaction to the future scenes was to noticed how all the minority characters plus Colossus are pretty much written out of the plot and on guard duty while all the white characters are inside to handle important stuff. They are not given even a tiny victory over the sentinels and die these gruesome deaths. Twice. Since the movie doesn't do anything to connect these characters to the audience, their deaths didn't have an impact on most of the audiences other than, wow mean sentinels. They came across to me as lambs to the slaughter. Add that to the Darwin death and everyone else in FC being killed off screen plus Storm's handling in these movies which continued in DOFP.

They so do not get any credit for diversity. I rather not have any than this disposable treatment.

Voted for Avengers. It was the better movie overall and handles all their characters well even if some got more screen time than others. If it weren't for McAvoy and Fassbender, I wouldn't be engage in the movie. Singer just doesn't direct exciting movies.

I also give the diversity credit to Avengers and Marvel studio movies than to DOFP or X-men movies. Is not about the quantity, is about the quality. Marvel studios has a long way to go too but they are in better shape.

How so?! Every single one of their leads are white males and they only have one female lead in the entire universe. The only other one (Maria Hill) is a barely developed supporting role.

The only other African-American characters outside of Fury are also in supporting/side-kick roles. Also, the one time they do hire an African-American actress, she's being painted green.

They aren't breaking any diversity barriers anymore than the X-Men franchise and with Ant-Man and Doctor Strange now on the horizon is doesn't look like they have any interest in doing so either.

I just figured Magneto controlled the sentinels by manipulating the metallic rods. Not truly reprogramming.

See, that's one thing that drops the movie's grade for me. There were so many little things like that that just made no sense. I wasn't on board with him putting the rail road track into the sentinels to begin with. But after watching him fully control the sentinels' robotics afterward... sorry, I'm not buying that.

Don't forget about the key role Pepper Potts has played, killing Stane and Killian.

To be fair, the only CBM breaking the barrier is Fantastic Four, right? Who else is really doing any radical racial moves in their films?

X-Men added Blink, Warpath and Bishop
The MCU made Melinda May and Antoine Tripplet strong roles in Agents of SHIELD

No one is really doing anything incredibly unexpected except Fox with Human Torch

I'm not for or against any radical or controversial casting decisions and don't want to get into that argument.

Falcon in Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

And DOFP gave us Blink, Bishop and Warpath, but they were minor characters. Hell, Storm was relegated to a minor.

I think that Black Window is better handled than any x-women. They just starting giving Mystique a little more depth in dofp. Maria Hills stands out way more than Storm ever has. The rest of X-women I would argue aren't even handled as well as the love interests in MCU like Potts or Peggy.

Nick Fury is important character even if he is not part of the main Avengers cast. Rhodes, Sam Wilson and Idris character in thor again have more character than any minority character that showed up in X-movies.

They do have some ways to go but at least none of their minority characters have been throw away or disposable the way they have been in the x-movies.

Here's my take on diversity on cbm casting. Many of the iconic heroes were created in the 40s...in America. By anyone's definition of bigotry, that was a very racist time in the USA. No major comic publisher was going to make their lead heroes anything other than white, str8 and mostly male. So minorities never had a chance to be represented. Today, we have an opportunity to change that scenario. Every kid deserves to pick up a comic or go see a superhero film and see their faces represented in the most popular characters.

A female Wolverine? Why not?

A gay Batman? Well, maybe we already have that. :yay:

A black Captain America? Bring it!

because...it's time. Past time, actually.

I'm glad someone finally said this.

Over in the DOFP forum, I was told when he said "Go and do what you're meant for" that it wasn't really a command. LOL

Well, to be fair, Xavier's emotional scene was reconned in the same movie in X3, and the deaths in DOFP were imo superficial since theirs too were reconned after Wolverine's mission was successful. I don't agree that Avengers' story was all about the spectacle, because Whedon put many scenes where the characters argued and bickered to each other, until the end when they finally got together to defeat a common enemy. There is more than enough meat in TA, although DOFP does have more emotional moments than TA.

Avengers over DOFP.
DOFP was the best xmen movie since X2 but it doesn't touch my top 3 favorite cbm's. Maybe if apocalypse is good it'll join tbe ranks of the best of all time.
