The 'Back To The Future' Appreciation Thread

The second one was the first I saw, then the third a few weeks or months later (taped them both, loved the hell out of them, particularly the second). I was four years old, I think. And I didn't see the first movie until... maybe two or three years later! SO you can imagine I was a little confused about aspects of the the second (basically the whole third act) but it didn't matter. Incredibly entertaining. The second is still my favourite.

The second movie is...different. Very dark. It definitely wasn't the way I thought a sequel would go. The first movie is one of my all time faves but I've only seen the second one once.

The second one is my favorite one because it was so ambitious.

I just checked out the box office numbers for the trilogy because I was curious. The first was a smash hit and the second one was really big. Why did the box office totally drop for the third installment?

Same thing for me, but I was about 10. Sprinkle in a very rough exposure to the cartoon and I was about 13 or 14 before I had it all sorted out.

I don't know. Maybe franchise fatigue or the old west setting. We might never know.

BTTF II and III were filmed back to back and released 6 months apart. Maybe the short time between movies had something to do with it as well?

I think the short length between the two had a big part of it as well. 6 months isn't a lot of time inbetween sequels.

I love part III as well. Mainly because as ambitious as Part II was, with all the timelines and story to track it can be a little exhausting.

Part III slowed it all down and gave the audience a chance to settle down and "breathe".

It went back to the formula of te first film.

Having said that, all 3 are classics.

I think Part III is the least favorite for most people. But I also remember Part II being promoted a LOT more than Part III. Everybody was playing up the future angle of Part II. It's just easier to promote, and I guess they just thought that the success of the second would be enough for the third?

Who knows?

Just for the record, I love all three movie by all different reasons and they are my favorite films of all time. I wrote an extensive article about those movies, but it's in spanish, I don't have the time or energy to translate all that. This trilogy encapsulates everything that I love about movies.

I love all three for different reasons as well.

The first will always been the best but the sequels are great because they change up the tone for two and three.

And hey, Doc Brown gets a love story in Part III which is nice.

That's one of the best things about it, they don't repeat themselves, but when they do it's because they take advantage of the time travel aspect without doing anything (which any time travel movie could, it's a very tricky thing). Instead, they focused on one place over several periods of time. It's genious stuff, I can't pray this movies enough.

I love em all equally but the first is still my fave I still get white knuckles during the race to the clock tower at the end. I am still hoping they will release the animated series on DVD someday I still love it.

IF I was forced to pick a favorite, i'd say it's Part II. I just find it to be so damn creative and just a great film that really explored the idea of time travel and its dangerous consequences.

The whole idea of returning to the events of the first movie in the 3rd act I still say was absolute genius.

If I had to pick, I would probably pick part II, but I really do love them all so much. It's the perfect trilogy to me. They're just so good!

Obviously I know it won't happen as the writers and Zemeckis have said that a part 4 won't happen, but do you guys think Universal has considered it at some point?

I'm sure a Part 4 has been considered at some point. Hollywood seems to consider everything at least once! But due to several factors, including Fox's health issues, I don't think it'll ever happen. The story's been told.

Regarding why the third film's box office was down I recall Spielberg, the producer of the trilogy, believing that despite the 2nd being a success there wasn't as much overall audience enthusiasm for it due to it being darker and more complicated in plot and as a result it dampened people's expectations for the BTTF 3.

Also Bob Gale said at the time people felt cheated that Back to the Future 2 had a "To be continued" as most didn't know it was going to be a trilogy. He says today we expect it but back in 1989, there had only been Star Wars that had done it.

That makes no sense, since there was a "to be continued" at the end of the first one.
