They didn't really modernise his costume though, so much as gave it full sleeves. It's a very basic design (plain green leather trousers, green jacket sewn on remnant of island hood), which is surprising considering they hired someone so talented for the job.

I hope they put some real effort into making the costume great. They got an Oscar winner to design Arrow's look and it's literally just a hooded jacket and leather pants. Spare no expense here, guys. You've got David Nutter to do the pilot, find someone who really knows their **** to do the costume.

This was a great post. Lol.

Well, Flash is going to be a MUCH more difficult costume to pull off than what Arrow's costume ended up being, so if they brought in someone with acclaim and awards to her name for that, they better be getting serious about this. Like, immediately.

Seriously, they need to be prepping that like RIGHT NOW.

Michael Wilkinson could be a good choice. I think his work on Tron: Legacy is a good template for what a Flash costume should look like. Sleek and form-fitting, but not flimsy. He also worked on MOS and Watchmen.

The Flash Speaks! Arrow's Grant Gustin Teases Spandex Supersuit, Wants Character to Time Travel
by JOHN BOONE

It's pretty safe to assume that if you're playing The Flash, the best preparation you can do for the role is run. Fast. So that's what Grant Gustin, who just landed the part on the CW's Arrow, is doing.

"I'm kind of running around a little bit, but mostly just for fun at this point," Gustin laughed on the red carpet at The Hollywood Reporter's Nominees and TV's New Season pre-Emmys party. "Just because I'm really excited...I'm a little fanboy. I'm so excited to be a part of the show."

Gustin, who previously starred as Sebastian on Glee, told us how he got the part, explaining, "I got an audition and I was really excited and a little skeptical at first, because I'm a comic book fan. I know the character and know I'm a little young."

He said it was a "long audition process" but the moment he found out he got the part made it all worthwhile: "I was at the ocean in Malibu with a buddy of mine," he recalled. "And just had a movie moment and jumped in the ocean afterwards. It was pretty amazing."

The Flash, aka Barry Allen, will appear in three episodes of the upcoming Arrow season, with the last acting as a backdoor pilot to a potential The Flash spinoff.

But Grant doesn't know too much about The Flash of the small screen just yet: "I know I'm coming on as up-and-coming in my field," he said of the assistant forensics scientist. "He's not going to be The Flash immediately, obviously."

He continued, "We're going to be Barry Allen first in two episodes and then he'll come back later as The Flash. I haven't actually had a chance to read any scripts yet, so we'll see." That doesn't mean he doesn't have ideas of what he'd like to see happen.

"I didn't realize before I started doing all my research that he can actually time travel, he can run so fast," Gustin explained, noting that he's been reading a lot of comics by Geoff Johns, who writes the DC comics and is also a writer for Arrow. "I think that'd be a really fun thing to play with on the show is him kind of going to different times and experimenting with that. That'd be fun."

As for his costume? Expect The Flash's signature red spandex. "I would image, when The Flash comes he'll be in a pretty traditional Flash costume," Gustin teases. "That's kind of what I've caught wind of."

Though it might not be as sexy as the suit some fans are dreaming of. We asked him if he's seen any of the fan art that's popped up of him online, including this racy piece by ~zephyrianBoom (check out her deviantArt portfolio here).

"Oh, the one that's like open?!" he laughed. "Yeah, I sent that to my mom actually. We just died laughing. She thought it was hilarious."

I hope he does good.

And Barry was 24 when he got his powers in the comics so Grant's age is fine, IMO, especially if this is origin Barry.

I don't think Gustin is going to be Flash in the big screen. It seems Warner will do the same thing they did with SR and Smallville (two different versions of a character). Then there's the scheduling conflict, these movies take around six months to shoot, so it would mess up the tv show season. I think is better to keep both separate, they would not have to worry about continuity issues and have more creative freedom.

This. They should remain desperate universes for many good reasons.

To be fair though when it comes o Green Arrow that's pretty much the best way to modernise his costume. The Flash is obviously a different kettle of fish as he has a cowl and a tight fitting costume.

Smallville did more than just basic for a modern GA costume, without even an Oscar winner. Arrow's idea of GA costume is another good reason why they won't crossing over this version to the movie verse lol.

Except that I like Arrow's version of the costume more than the comics, except for the face paint. Also, why would they want to have two separate live action universes featuring the same characters? It makes little sense.

If WB/DC would ever decide to bring the "Arrow" version of GA for a live action movie, Justice League etc, it wouldn't be that surprising that they would give him a new costume.

Hopefully Flash will have a proper movie quality suit from the get go.

The costume GA's got on Arrow looks fine for the character, I don't see what's the problem.

Wait a minute....I thought the Ban Sawyer thing was a joke...it was real?

Nobody said the costume doesn't look good. It's just inherently plain, superheroes are defined by the trope of the iconography of the costume, and this is anything but. It's not just subdued, but almost non-existent: green leather trousers, green leather jacket, appliqued green hood.

I think we'll see him adopt more superheroic qualities to his costume when he stops being a vigilante and becomes more super hero. We may see the start of that this season since Flash and other teased heroes will be stopping by.

Even though the costume is simple I think it looks really good. It matches the tone of the show and in certain shots it looks very comic booky. It could have been a lot worse.

The flash, like most have said, is a much different costume. They really should be hiring whoever works with Snyder on the movies. Something tells me after the wonder woman tv costume debacle, they may have learned there lesson.

An idea for a modernization of Wally's origin. Instead of Wally coming to visit Iris after Barry is the Flash he comes before and takes a tour of Barry's lab. Both of them have the accident at the same time, but we don't discover Wally was affected until later.

It would kinda ruin the irony of "lightning striking twice" in the same place.

I've been playing with a similar idea in my concept for a Flash movie, which I keep procrastinating on. Except instead of Barry's lab, I changed it to S.T.A.R. Labs, where Mirror Master killed a security guard attempting to steal tech.

Barry's called in on his day off, while he's spending time with Wally. Wanting to save time so Barry can get to the scen faster, Wally promises to wait in the car. Except Wally spots someone suspicious going into Star. Perhaps a result of reading one too many of Barry's comics, he follows. A storm brews overhead.

Inside, Wally loses him, only for Mirror Master to cause him to fall into a rack of chemicals, in the process pulling and loosening an overhead cable. Which provides Mirror Master with the distraction he needs to steal the tech he wanted.

When Barry comes to Wally's aid, a small crate labeled "Project Mercury" falls, splashing its contents, in addition to the other chemicals, onto Barry and Wally. This triggers the labs alarms, causing Barry and Wally to be sealed within.

The cable falls loose. At the same time, lightning strikes the building. We go into slow motion as we follow the electricity traveling through the cable before it makes contact with the chemical soaked floor, causing the explosion that engulfs Barry and Wally in fire and lighting.

cut to black.

Project Mercury is later revealed to be what remains of the experiment that gave Jay Garrick his powers.

It's a work in progress.

Don't like. Dilutes Barry's origin too much, I feel it takes away from it too in some ways. Barry's origin should really be a very rare, one-of-a-kind occurrence, where even if there were others involved, simply because they were NOT Barry Allen and not in the exact spot he was in they do not have the same powers he does.

I'd rather it be a case where Barry can somehow transfer his powers to Wally somewhat or something like that some way...
