The Batman: Eternal weekly review and discussion thread

You'll be happy. He's in a suit in this week's issue.

Oh for sure. It was expected seeing Selina's face/reaction back in #2.

I'm really curious how they have Selina handle her possible parentage. Having her become daddy's little villain would be a little lame, but her assumption of the Gotham Underworld is coming. Maybe she steals it from daddy and tries to run her own version of his dream, one that's a bit more altruistic thanks to the "regime" in charge of Gotham. Selina as a Rick from Casablanca plus Kingpin boss would be cool, and she's clearly on less hostile terms than you'd expect with Batman.

Tim Drake is back under the Bat Editorial board for this issue, and as per his usual luck with female peers, he pretty much crashes into Harper and uncovers the nano-virus mentioned in the flash forward issue. This subplot seems disconnected from the previous issues, with the antagonist the weird techno-gadget guy from Zero Year's flashbacks. It seems this will be the main Sci-Fi story in comparison to next weeks more mystical fare and the previous issues' noirish themes.

Vicki Vale also makes her first major appearance here, with cajones the size of wrecking balls and her own expy of Jimmy Olsen. It seems that while our Interim Commisioner may be keeping the gang war under wraps, even he can't shut down the press. At least, not yet.

Harper herself remains a largely self-developed vigilante, and her brother succumbs to the same techno-virus Tim's tracking, probably due TK the signal Tim sent out himself. Tim's usage of his New 52 wrist guards already shows more creativity than in the entirety of Teen Titans vol. 1, and the shout out to Young Justice the TV show is nice.

Still, this issue was more like three plots that just happened to intersect here than any organic plot. No doubt these subplots will receive more coverage in a month. Personally, I'm hoping for some more retro-Tim Drake characterization and plotting and they avoid confining him to the "smart Robin" role. A major appeal to his solos were his times outside the mask, and with both Harper and Spoiler on a collision course with him, hopefully we get to see the awkward geek again. However, his own paranoid nature actually lines up well with his last book. Is it too much to hope for some soft-retconning to bring some of those elements in?

So glad to see Tim back in action with Batman. Here's hoping they can get back to the point of mutual trust they had in the 90s-00s.

Now that you mention it, I really miss the Tim/Batman pairing. We really haven't seen them work together in years!

Let's see. Their partnership was already slipping in the gang war when Stephanie Brown was "killed." That was right before Identity Crisis I think, so once Tim's dad died, they didn't pair up much. I can recall many Bat/Tim stories during Infinite Crisis They had lots of off panel adventures in 52. Once One Year Later hit I don't think they saw much of each other. And pretty soon after that Damian showed up and Bruce died. By the time bruce came back, Tim was Red Robin. Then New 52 kind of blew eveything to hell and between Barb, Jason, and Damian being active bat-team members, Tim lost his role in the family.

Issue 5 was my least favorite so far. Issue 6 was really interesting again. And Pyg is back today!

Today's issue really stepped things up and set the tone that's to come. Falcone may have the upper hand, but the capes and masks crew aren't giving up without a fight! And how sympathetic did Penguin come off as? You felt his pain, and believed him when he said he saved Gotham, and his reasons seemed pure. It'll be fun to see where Eternal takes him going forward.

great issue indeed. I liked the catwoman/penguin dynamic.

Pyg sounded the most like he originally sounded. That maniac is great to have in a story. His kind of crazy is different from the Joker, but as scary.

The art was also quite good.

The series continues to deliver. The catwman/penguin's dynamic was interesting, and Bard helping Bats in the shadows was cool. Also Bats in Hong Kong promises to be interesting.

I wonder who that woman is? I first thought it was Selina but in an interview with MTV, Layman confirms she's a new character.

Hopefully it's the New 52 introduction of Lady Shiva or Cass Cain. :awesome:

Shiva's already appeared with a stupid killer-ponytail, and Cass seems big enough they'd announce her reappearance, like they did with. Stephanie Brown.

What I'm thinking is we have our "Penny One" in the Batcave, with Alfred providing logistical support since apparently we can't have Babs as a badass genius in the New 52. I'm thinking we may be looking at "Penny Two," a new Pennyworth girl like Julia and Daphne, but built around the spy elements of Alfred's past. There's a confirmed new character operating the computer in Batman #28, and whoever miss British-slang is, she's apparently supposed to become important as well.

The thing that interests me about Hong Kong is that we have Jason Todd chilling there in a bar in issue #2, and his established past includes cleaning out the city's underworld multiple times. I have a feeling that Babs will try and have him help them figure out ways to take down Falcone, since the Roman probably had to have filled in the power vacuum.

Though I m hoping we have a confirmed Batman Inc. agent who went under some months ago as well...

#9 was great!

Julia Pennyworth! :wow:

I was glad to see Jiro. It's great that Morrison's legacy is so used lately, be it in Tomasi's run or here. Falcone has it coming now, with what he did to selina...

Is anybody going to get that phone?

Cause I called it!

So we've got Julia Pennyworth as a spy for the British government. The character's not quite new, but she's been out of comics since before I was born. And I have to admit I found it hilarious that they had to throw in two instances of British slang to properly convey her nationality. That's so hard to set up in comics it's a cliché.

And yeah, no Cass Cain in Hong Kong. I wasn't expecting her (they've proven they're smart enough to announce these kind of reappearances) but having Mr. Unknown from Japan appear in Hong Kong feels a little stupid. They couldn't use that Dragon guy from before or just create another character?

that's because every city in asia is chinese actually. Also, japanese and chinese are the same people. Just wait for Batman to meet Jiron in Seoul next time.

Dustin Nguyen's amazing covers for #15 and #16:

Janin was awesome on #12. Bard is nothing like the previous Bard, but he's amazing. I love eternal. Which comes as a surprise, since I don't care for Snyder's Batman.

I'll probably get flack for this, but I've always thought that Nguyen's covers were WAY better than his interiors. Don't get me wrong, I like his interiors, but his covers are nothing short of astounding. But maybe it's the inking or the coloring or something.

He's got more freedom for imagination in his covers. The guy's most eye catching art is when he's given free reign. He still damn good at interiors, but het can use different compositions and coloring techniques on the covers.
