The Batman Reboot Casting Thread - Part 7

It's not so much that there was no detective work in the Nolan films, it's that it wasn't the focus. Those films lean more towards the action/adventure side of the Batman mythos. We have yet to get a live-action Batman film that is as simple as Batman solving a mystery.

It's a rumor for now, but if Reeves really is looking at films like Zodiac and Se7en for inspiration, that's music to my ears.

Yep. And that's really all I was getting at before a certain someone, who seems to be really close personal friends with Jake Gyllenhaal, decided to turn this into an internet dick measuring contest.

And I agree, that sounds amazing. Hopefully Reeves has Riddler in mind for the villain. A mental chess match between Batman and Riddler would be a FANTASTIC concept for a Bat movie. Alternatively, Hush, if done right, could make an effective villain, especially with a mystery angle (i.e. "who is Hush?").

I'd also like Colin Firth as a younger Alfred.

Colin Firth would be the most charming, dreamiest Alfred ever.

Alfred is the comeback role Day-Lewis is waiting for.

Who cares about a Day-Lewis comeback? Time for a Billy Petersen comeback as Gordon!

I'm skeptical of his mustache ability, though. It's always been a little pencilly, even in Young Guns 2.

:funny:

And that, my friends, is how you duck a question when you know you have no substantive answer.
Lol think what you want. It doesn't change my life. If you can't pay attention, I don't see that as a Shauner problem. And you can call me pompous. That's ok. I'm on a forum, it's not going to hurt my feelings. I really don't mind.

You're right about it not being the focus. But there were a lot more scenes in TDK than the bank scene. Like, really? That's the only one you can think of? Nothing substantial? I'll let you figure the rest out for yourself lol.

As for the Reeves movie. I'm down for more detective work. I'm only good with Riddler if they cast a good actor and write him like you said, as the Little Finger. He still has too many similarities to the Joker for my taste (yes, I know there are differences too).

If Pete Postlethwaite were still alive he'd be my Alfred. But I would cast Liam Cunningham.

Anyone else think that Liev Schreiber would make a stellar Jim Gordon?

I wouldn't be opposed to a Gordon that isn't quite so geriatric.

I'm kind of pulling for Kyle Chandler.

If Gyll's gonna be it, then Gyll's gonna be it. Whether or not he'll sign a multi-picture deal is the question.

I realize that Malcolm McDowell could be another Jeremy Irons but Malcolm is one of my favorite actors and he has great comedic timing. I think he would be similar to Jeremy, but better in the end. Especially with a juicier role.

As for an Alfred with warmth, I'm still thinking of who that could be. Sean Bean is only a good pick if they want to go much younger. Kyle Chandler would be my choice for Gordon if that's the case. But for the classic 70 year old interpretation, hmm.

If anyone was wondering, it's Maria Bello (above) for Sarah Essen. Naomie Watts would work if Kyle Chandler was the commish. And Robin Wright would have been my pick for a Nolan trilogy Essen (impossible for here because Wonder Woman is carrying on). Bello fits well IMO. Believable as a detective.

Too bad Reeves wasn't doing a Batman set between Nolan's TDK and TDKR cuz he worked with Gary Oldman before. I realized that the other day.

I am intrigued and have (tempered) excitement for this iteration, based on what Reeves has said (noir thriller). He nails it with his assessment of TDK (one of if not my favourite CB movie ever), that it is basically a Joker movie. Waititi on Thor 3: There's no point calling the movie Thor if he's not the coolest thing in it.

Reeves has mentioned he will focus on the detective aspect of Batman which has been sorely neglected in his cinematic appearances. I hope they write a movie where Batman is the smartest thing in it, and the mystery that unravels is a surprise to the audience. Write the screenplay in such a way that this is focused on and every time the viewer makes a deduction, Batman should have already been there half an hour ago.

Finally please use the Batman we saw in BvS as the baseline for his fighting ability. WB, I know you're not listening, but make Batman invincible against (groups of) low level thugs, he's earned it. Anything capable of giving him a challenge in a fist fight should either be one of his deadliest foes or a metahuman. If BvS did one thing right it was capture the essence of Batman's fighting style visually based on the combat system in the Arkham series.

Without having to add a single scene for a shared universe, you can plant a seed by making it obvious he's the smartest person in almost any room. When you inevitably see this Batman in another Justice League movie, you will have faith that this version of the hero will have a plan to save their metahuman butts when it hits the fan.

This might seem like a silly thing to really need in a movie but I want a movie that celebrates the fact that Bruce Wayne is exceptional, he would have to be.
