Who could have ever predicted this COLOSSAL of a hit for this?

Black people. I'm just sayin. Since that first Black Panther trailer black twitter has been saying this will be HUGE.

Well DC does have the rights to Icon and his story is based deeply in african american culture. I think Icon saw the end of slavery, has a black sidekick, and matches superman in a straight up overpowered fight.

He's basically to Supes what Black Panther is to Cap.

DC doesn’t like to go outside of their comfort zone, and a lot of the upcoming movies are still related to the Batman universe (Batgirl, Joker, Gotham City Sirens, etc). Personally, I doubt they would ever make an Icon movie.

Oh not saying it has a chance in hell. I just wanted to let a poster know that they have an ICONIC black superhero if they wanted to push that agenda.

Damn, the predictions are going up by the hour!

I like Icon but he's too much of a blatant Superman rip off.

Static is Spider-man rip off but far less blatant.

What agenda?

Why is anything but a white male protagonist an agenda?

White males are only 35% of the US population.

Still, Justice League will destroy BP when it comes out. Oh, wait... :loco:
Heh.

Boxofficemojo are calling it $185m for the 3 day and $210m for the 4 day!

I've only followed two of these Box Office threads, and man, it must jarring the way estimates for JL kept going down and this one keeps going up.

ironically that's about the range i predicted for BP first weekend box office in a previous thread. (183 mill)

How long ago did you predict that?

I'm white, and I knew BP was going to pop with black audiences. I just didn't expect BP to overperform the way it is now (having it open to Deadpool numbers would've been expected, but not a $200M 4-day haul). BP is benefiting from crossover appeal with black audiences and Marvel fans alike.

How fast will Warner try to push Cyborg now?

Oh, they will... either that or GLC. WB knew Marvel was onto something when they moved BP up from July 2018 to February. That's when they booked mid-February 2020 and 2021 for their "Untitled DC Film" and "Untitled WB Event Film".

If WB can find a similar director who loves Cyborg and has a vision for the film that fits with the studio's -- they will fast-track it for early 2020. I don't know if they have a Cyborg script yet, but I imagine they're getting Geoff Johns to craft a treatment and send it out to potential writers.

I hate when people simply judge one post without finding out why something was posted.

Someone asked if DC would fast track a black superhero due to Black Panthers box office success. Someone else said DC didn't have that type of iconic black superhero. I said Icon was a iconic black DC superhero and if DC wanted to push a black superhero due to Black Panthers box office success, Icon would be it. The idea of fast tracking a black superhero JUST because Marvel was successful would be an agenda.

Just like pushing a justice league movie because of The Avengers success.

Back on topic. I think Black Panther will make 1.2 billion.

I thought that $600 million was a safe pick just because of Marvel's name being attached. I just didn't realize how good Coogler was and how much resonance this movie was having. With it's performance so far, $800 million is looking like a certainty with $900 potentially happening as well.

Does Cyborg have the "it" factor though? Black Panther has everything going for him...awesome suit, has gadgets and high tech that can't be matched, great at hand to hand combat. Those are things audiences eat up. I don't see that kind of appeal in Cyborg and I don't think Justice League did his character any favors like Civil War did for Black Panther.

So silly numbers like $400m don’t even seem far away now. More a question of how much more can it make?! It might even have decent legs after a huge opening if the reception is as good everywhere.

Static is an amalgamation of Spidey and Black Lightning. I agree with you that Icon is too much of a blatant Superman ripoff/archetype despite having a slight twist. However, for the sake of fairness, MOST comic book (and non comic book) superheroes are ripoffs/or archetypes or an amalgamation of 2 or more previously existing characters., including the Black Panther.

IMO, instead of trying to make either a Cyborg or John Stewart GL film, they should try to make either a BATWING (the Luke Fox version of the character) ,ORPHEUS,or a SIGNAL movie.

Nope he does not. DC doesn't have a lead character who is Black because they never bothered to build one up. The closest one is Black Lightning. John Stewart, Vixen, Cyborg, Steel, Mr Terrific...etc are team/supporting characters not leads, at least as of 2018. Static and Icon are leads, but DC doesn't own them, they just have the publishing license.

DC does have Hispanic and female leads however.

It’s not just about having a black lead. BP is unique because pretty much the entire cast is black. It’s story centers around black culture and Afrofuturism. I don’t think you can reproduce that same buzz and box office by casting a black lead any more than you can make a billion by just throwing a bunch of superheroes in the same movie.

It shouldn't be about trying to garner the same buzz as BP by copying BP. It should be about making more superhero movies with Black lead characters regardless if the cast is mostly Black or not. I wanna see lesser known and less popular ORIGINAL DC and Marvel Black and other minority characters being utilized in these films either as leads starring in their own movies or as part of an ensemble cast. Trying to copy another films success by rehashing and/or ripping off the things that were done in said successful film is a bad idea and often results in a bad movie (Like the GREEN LANTERN movie tried to imitate the IRON MAN movie).

Screw Cyborg. People are not going to suddenly turn a every black superhero movie into a hit. It doesn't work like that. There's nothing aspirational about Cyborg. He's a depressed eunuch. Why would black people want to overly celebrate a character like Cyborg. Just because he's black? It doesn't work like that. Black Panther is aspirational in every way possible. A King.

DC has a near-equivalent to Black Panther in Mr Terrific, but they are sort of too stupid to realise it. Michael Holt is a self-made billionaire, the third smartest man in the world, and incredible fighter, a former Chairman of the Justice Society. Respected by Batman as an equal in mind and body. Mr Terrific is as aspirational as Black Panther. In some ways moreso for African-Americans, because he's American and fufills the notion of American exceptionalism. Wheras Black Panther is great, but as an African King, almost a fantasy figure to most black Americans.

And unlike Cyborg, Mr Terrific still has a functioning penis, and can make love to Power Girl when he feels like it.

.

Mr Terrific should have been. He was given solo title during New 52 that only lasted 8 issues. He got sabotaged with one of the worst creative teams out there. It's like DC deliberately sent the comic out to fail. The writing was pedestrian. His comic had some of the worst artwork I'd ever seen (all the characters looked unattractive. Even Power Girl. And it's hard to make a cheescake character like Power Girl look unattractive, but that Mr Terrfic artist managed it). I took one look at the art, and I knew the comic was going to get cancelled very quickly.

If DC editorial at the time really wanted to make Terrific an A-list solo hero, they would not have have saddled him with such an uninspired creative team. At the very lest, they'd have given him a stronger artist to increase the title's odds of survival.
