The Bond 23 Thread

You are a clever man, Mr Bond. Perhaps too clever. Twice our paths have crossed and I do not intend to be interrupted by a third.

"Oh that interesting car of yours! I too have a new toy, but considerably more practical."

Ah right I see, so you'll be watching this new one but probably not buying it?

I'm not sure which bit that is, in my mind I am seeing it as the sequence from FYEO where Bond and Melina are dragged behind the boat in the shark infested waters.

:funny: I almost forgot this isn't just a general James Bond thread given all the great discussions over the last few days about the whole series.

Bringing Moneypenny back is interesting, I wonder if the role would be bigger than usual, as the size it normally has been seems a small role for Harris to take.

I'm guessing these are a more recent spin-off series?

I'll watch it. But I've not felt moved to buy a Bond movie since Goldeneye. CR my dad got for me. It's not some weird thing with me, it's just that there's this huge disconnect with the literary and film character that it's hard to watch sometimes. Stories that start like the book and just veer left 2 mins in. Or scenes (or characters) from one book showing up in another movie and acting completely out of character to the point where it would have made sense to create a new character.

Yes, the scene in the movie FYEO (thanks for correcting me, see I wasnt even sure what movie they used that climax in) when they are being dragged behind the boat came from the climax of the novel LALD. That's how all the bad guys died, at sea. Don't remember how they did it in the movie, but I know that it didn't play out like that.

Or how many times has Milton Crest, smuggler, wife beater been used? He was in one story but he showed up in LTK and one other one if I'm not mistaken.

The Moneypenny Diaries are not that recent. They came after 96's (Benson's last Bond novel) and before '02 (Higson's first Young Bond novel). Three books written in the first person about Moneypenny. Bond does show up, but they are about her and her work in the service.

Feinnes starts shooting Bond 23 in DECEMBER!!!!

LONDON -- Ralph Fiennes will play Prospero in "The Tempest," Shakespeare's final play, at the Theater Royal Haymarket in London's West End. Helmed by Trevor Nunn, the production will begin previews from Aug. 27.

Fiennes's movie commitments mean the run will be strictly limited. He is skedded to start filming on the Sam Mendes helmed "Bond 23" In December. The latter is scripted by John Logan who also scripted Fiennes's recent movie helming debut "Coriolanus."

In other casting news, Dame Diana Rigg will join the forthcoming West End production of Shaw's "Pygmalion." She will play mother to the previously announced Rupert Everett. The Chichester Festival Theater production, directed by Philip Prowse, previews at the Garrick from May 12 ahead of a May 25 opening.

www.slashfilm.com:

We haven’t had a lot of real news about the Sam Mendes-directed Bond 23 since the release dates were confirmed, but here’s a nice batch of confirmations and one new bit of info. Javier Bardem and Ralph Fiennes, the former heavily tipped for a role (going so far as to reveal that he would be the villain if cast) and the latter rumored for some time, both seem to be confirmed for the film. And Miss Moneypenny, a staple Bond character who hasn’t been seen since the Pierce Brosnan films, will make an appearance as well, played by Naomie Harris.

The Daily Mail says that Naomie Harris is in final talks to take the role, and also says that Ralph Fiennes and Javier Bardem are confirmed. As is often the case with Daily Mail reports, the outlet itself can lead to some suspicion, but writer Baz Bamigboye has been on the money with Bond info, and other reports.

Naomie Harris has been rumored for a bit, so this isn’t any sort of surprise, but it’s an interesting note, given the way that the Daniel Craig Bond films have generally done away with many of the classic elements of the franchise. Miss Moneypenny has been a very minor character in past installments, but in casting Naomie Harris there is the suggestion that she might have a bit more to do this time out.

Meanwhile, there’s the question of who might sing the theme to Bond 23 and Bond composer David Arnold still wants Amy Winehouse, who was courted for Quantum of Solace but didn’t do the theme thanks to her own personal issues. Recent tour problems suggest those issues haven’t gone away, so this doesn’t seem the most likely move. She’d be good for the theme, no doubt, but so would Adele, who David Arnold also mentions.

The voice over on this trailer for OHMSS is hilarious, especially in the first few lines. :D I wonder if trailers were seen as less important back then.

What was the story in the book version of Live and Let Die?

It has certainly been that recently. Maybe when the movie starts shooting and the thread becomes centered on Bond 23, we can make a separate all encompassing Bond thread.

I think you're right and it's really effective, one of my personal favourites bar Bond being operated on to look Japanese, I imagine that silly idea wasn't in the book, but the plot was cool, Blofeld and SPECTRE indulging in a spot of Grand Theft Space Shuttle. :D

I like this OHMSS trailer better, especially the voiceover.

[YT]DVP2n_GcdlQ[/YT]

An Avalanche of action; bigger, better; they've got to be when he's around.

I think it would be a good idea for when more news pops up about Bond 23 that there should be separate thread discussing older Bond movies.

Interestingly the bolded bits were incorporated into Licence To Kill and You Only Live Twice. I'm guessing Teehee and the Baron Samedi were not in the book?

Haha told you many parts of Live and Let Die were used in other movies.

The way they used the Baron Samedi idea seems much better than in the movie, I was surprised in the movie when they went the whole way with the character and had him sitting on the end of train at the end.

I thought it was cool that he was on the train at the end. I wish they used him in another movie like they wanted to.

I guess the earlier news about Naomie Harris playing Money Penny is correct!

This is awesome news. Bardem and Fiennes will guarantee great performances!

Also, I think Adele would be great with the theme. I'm guessing the article that said Kings of Leon would do the theme was false?

It's cool that the article is saying that Bardem and Fiennes are confirmed, but to be on the safe side I'd wait for a confirmation but man that got me so excited! Harris as Moneypenny is good too.

Mendes is certainly bringing in the star power. I don't think a previous Bond movie has gotten so many noticeable stars.

It's like Batman Begins or "The Dark Knight"

Javier Bardem and Ralph Fiennes!!!!!! Awesome news!!!

It's about time they start breaking the mold. Many times I feel like Bond has become that stepping stone franchise to catapult unknowns into Hollywood. It doesn't help that the roles aren't particularly all that engaging.

With Fiennes and Bardem on board, I expect a huge leap in character development.

I'll wait for more confirmation but damn this is exciting stuff. :applaud

It's interesting to note that SMERSH were involved in drug running in the books.

I like your set up, it sounds great and would fit well, plus your idea for the shot that leads into the credits would be visually amazing.

ah right, i havent seen those 2 films since i was a kiddy wink

as i recall smersh were actually smuggling gold from inside the volcano i think - but a modern update could be a drugs farm/factory inside the volcano, and they could line fish tanks to smuggle it out just like in the book

I'll watch it. But I've not felt moved to buy a Bond movie since Goldeneye. CR my dad got for me. I pretty much feel the same way, but casino royale was pretty close to the book really

People should be able to separate the movies from the books when watching them. It can be hard, but it's not fair to the film. But I can see what people mean, especially if there's missed opportunities from the books where it could have easily figured into the film. Did alot of legal trouble prevent this?

I haven't read the novels, but since I've been accustomed to the films all these years, it shouldn't be hard to forgive the changes.

Moonraker as a novel is very different from the movie, and it sounds a lot better. They don't even go into space.
Bond does not even leave England and i find that excellent. Id love to see a Bond film where he spends the entire time in England or at least 75% of it....

This is some good news on Bond 23. Sounds like Eon or MGM or somebody feels like shaking things up by getting siome more well known names. Can't wait for the title.

Saw the news earlier of javier, and raplh are close to locked in for film. Can't wait to see whhat there roles are. Also nice to hear namoi will be in film. I was hoping she be a bond girl then moneypenny. Can't wait to see how her moneypenny is.

Random question: Which Bond movie do you think Judi Dench gave her best performance as M?

I have to say Quantam of Solace. Although the movie wasn't the best, Dench was brilliant in it. She had some terrific scenes with Bond. I particularly loved when they were checking out the apartment of the bodyguard who betrayed her.

From what I hear of the Moonraker novel I also wish we got the novel version of that for the movie. :csad:

I can certainly understand that if you grew up on the books.

Milton Crest was the guy who got combusted in License to Kill isn't he? Can't recall him in another movie, unless he was played by a different actor on the other occasion.

What sort of things do they cover? as we only really see her behind her desk in the films.

I like this OHMSS trailer better, especially the voiceover.

That is a better trailer, some of the shots in the snow really do stand up well.

We'll need a snazzy title for the thread. :woot:

Haha told you many parts of Live and Let Die were used in other movies.

It's amazing to see how many of the films contain bits plucked from other books in the series

I thought it was cool that he was on the train at the end. I wish they used him in another movie like they wanted to.

They were sort of playing him as supernatural though, which I don't think fits with Bond. What plans were there for him in another movie?

There's certainly the potential to take some of the old books that have been made in name only, and take the elements and fit them into the new movies.

From what I hear of the Moonraker novel I also wish we got the novel version of that for the movie.

DAD was partially Moonraker, partially Colonel Sun, partially Icebreaker. You got your identity changing villain who is hiding in plain sight who is setting up a weapon from space (instead of rockets as in the book) to destroy British interests. They replaced the cardgame at Blades from the book with the duel at Blades, but the aim of the scene was clearly the same. Many of the beats of DAD were pretty much MR.

I can certainly understand that if you grew up on the books.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure Crest showed up played by another actor in one of the Moore movies.

The Moneypenny books cover different things. She's got quite the illustrious Navy career herself, not just anyone is the assistant of M. We also see more of the day to day at Universal Exports so we get to see more of the agents and office staff.

Wow. It makes you wonder how EON managed to f**k that up so badly.

There were no solid plans for Baron Samedi, but at the time they wanted to use him for another film, but just didn't. Either way, I still think that's cool ending.

Also, if you want to see badass moment from LALD, see my avy. :woot:

I'm in the mood to watch LALD now. :awesome:

Yeah i wish they would have made Moonraker the novel and Icebreaker as seperate films instead of the ******** we got in the form of Die Another Day. I still want to see a bond film set mainly in England though, just like the Moonraker novel....

Well, it's not like pieces from several adaptations in a series can't be adapted correctly, but I understand your frustration.
