Bumblebee The Bumblebee Spin-Off Official Thread

As a Transformers movie that sounds pretty boring :D

As a TV show, that sounds fine for an episode scenario, but not for a spin-off movie...

Then again, maybe scaling it down will be good for the franchise.

I can completely understand why fans might find it boring, with less robots and all. I'm probably in the minority, at least among the TF fanbase, but this premise intrigues me far more than any of the previous films.

I really don't want or need another movie about saving the entire planet from a super-weapon, I'm kind of looking forward to seeing what they will do with a movie that focuses less on spectacle and huge action set pieces. This sounds like it will be more in line with something like Spider-Man Homecoming (which seemed to have more screen-time dedicated to Peter's high-school life than it did to Spider-man punching bad-guys). I'm really just hoping for a smart and well-written movie.

“The story is set in the year 1987, where Bumblebee finds refuge in a junkyard in a small Californian beach town. Charlie (Steinfeld), on the cusp of turning 18 and trying to find her place in the world, discovers Bumblebee, battle-scarred and broken. When Charlie revives him, she quickly learns this is no ordinary, yellow VW bug.”

I absolutely love the premise, it sounds small-scale and full of personality. Also, it actually sounds like a premise for a story, not just a bunch of vague mumbo-jumbo about ancient knights and unlocking the secrets of the past, etc. It's actually very similar to what I assumed the setup would be, and I'm glad it's coming true.

This also seems to confirm that Bee will indeed be a VW Beetle in the movie, which is great.

The Transformers Prime show cast wrestler Dwayne Johnson as Cliffjumper, so it would be interesting if John Cena (also a wrestler) voiced the same character in the movie series.

As for the bad news, it's being pushed back to December 21st. Why? I can understand pushing it back a couple months if the schedule collides with other movies that come out in June or to give the studio more time, but pushing it back all the way to December? In general I have more trouble getting excited for December movies than summer movies because there's so much going on around that time with Christmas and all. I loved Rogue One, but the experience of seeing it for the first time didn't really stick with me that much because that time of year was so busy. Aside from that, something about the Transformers brand has always felt more like a summer thing than a winter thing to me. I'm really hoping they change that release date.

Woah, neat trivia. Had no idea that was The Rock.

It's possible they're going for more of a winter feel this time.
Would certainly stand out even more.

It's possible, but a couple set photos just popped up on TFW2005, and they feature Hailee Steinfeld's character at a pool, so it seems like the movie at least partially take place in warm weather.

Basically sounds like ET but with Bumblebee. We shall see. I'm not getting my hopes up. But if it turns out OK, great.

The film is set and shot in California. It's always warm weather here. You aren't simulating snowy roads and winter in the 1980s in Southern and Northern California.

I'm trying not to get my hopes up too high either. It's hard because I really want a good Transformers movie, but part of me thinks it's just going to be another Bayformers. Some of the decisions during the production and filming of TLK made me think that TLK might finally be the one that pleased people and critics, but it turned out to just be more of the same. I hope that's not the case here.

That's quite true.

I :hrt: Hailee Steinfeld, she looks great!

(Motorhead!)

This movie's damn lucky to have her...

Do I dare ask if she's a Witwicky by blood?

As a fan of 80s rock, I'll definitely be checking out Ace of Spades by Motorhead very soon.

Do I dare ask if she's a Witwicky by blood?

Eh, I hope not. I'd prefer her just be a new character, I don't think everyone needs to be related in movies.

Agreed, have her be her own character separated from the main movies. Really hope we get lots of Bumblebee in this. You would think so given the nature of the movie, but after TLK I am cautious.

At this point I feel like they would be wise to distance themselves as much as possible from the Bay films, even if they are set in the same timeline. The last thing they should want to do is bring back memories of Shia LaBeouf in the first three movies, especially with the bad reputation he has gotten recently. Aside from that, I simply like the idea that any random person can stumble upon a Transformer, having all the lead humans related by blood makes the universe feel so small.

Yeah I agree, the only thing that should connect the movies is Bumblebee himself.

I have a small amount of faith in this just because the premise sounds potentially interesting, it's a period piece, and they got the guy who made Kubo of the Two Strings (which was really good) to direct.

Oh and Hailee is a talented young actress, hopefully they use her better than Bay uses his female characters.

They have no choice but to distance the new movie from the Bay films after the performance of the last one.

I listened to to that album by Motorhead (the one on Hailee Steinfeld's shirt), and I'm sorry to say that I'm not a huge fan. I love 80s music (my favorite era), but I'm not really into stuff quite that heavy. I really hope this movie has an 80s soundtrack, but I'd prefer it be a bit more like GOTG's.

It's absolutely beautiful! I'm almost beyond words to express how perfect I feel this is, it's exactly what I was hoping for, very simple and retro looking. Knowing Bay (who isn't directing, but is the producer) I was half expecting black stripes, flame designs, huge offroad tires, or some other bizarre and overly stylized design cue. Nope, it's just a plain old Volkswagen Beetle that would go unnoticed by most people, and that's EXACTLY what a Transformer should be, and should have been from the beginning. The hubcaps are perfect, the bumper is perfect; I just hope the movie itself is half as good as this design.

This is what we should've gotten 10 years ago.

It wasn't Volkswagon. It was because Michael Bay didn't like it!

I agree. Seeing this makes me even more mad at Michael Bay for wasting 10 years with his nonsense. All it took was one different director to get what fans have been wanting for 30+ years.

Edit: I do wonder if we'll see Bee upgrade to a Camaro in the film. I don't really like him as a modern Camaro, but I actually think 80s Camaros look pretty cool so I'd be fine with it. As long as he's an 80's model and not that 70s one from the first film, that would be dumb; hopefully he stays a VW for the majority of the film. I would like something like this:

“Vallejo has got great bones,” he said of the town’s infrastructure. “It’s an Anywhere America, Back-to-the-Future type vibe. The great thing about Vallejo is there aren’t these huge chain stores. There a few other cities in California like it, but not that many. The city hasn’t been turned into a strip mall.”

I love this setting and vibe they're going for.

Mare Island’s drydocks have been perfect for “Bumblebee,” said Hook.

So good, he noted, “the ending of the movie was re-written after finding the location.”

The “Transformer” films allow the improvisation, he said. Not so with a movie like “Inception,” where “you have a completely finished, polished script before you start and honor every word.”

Hmm, the ending of the movie was rewritten after finding this new location? It's a cool location, but I just hope the story makes sense. This idea of making the movie flexibly and not setting anything in stone makes me a little worried, hopefully it all comes together for a good final product.

di Bonaventura explained that the movie, which is about halfway finished, is set to be the most emotional installment in the Transformers series.

Thank goodness, emotion is something this series is desperately in need of.

In terms of the film’s style, the ’80s setting allows for a lot of fun, from the cars to the music (and the terrible hairstyles). On the action front, it’s impossible to top Bayhem, so there’ll be a “different type” of action.

This sounds like a lot of fun. But give them a break, lol, the hairstyles weren't that bad. :D

And I'm really intrigued by the phrase "different type of action". As someone who does not like Bay's excessive style of action, I'm hoping this movie has more grounded, well-choreographed, and minimal action sequences.
