Bumblebee The Bumblebee Spin-Off Official Thread

Once we get a trailer I imagine the hype will begin to build. I am hoping this can get the franchise back on track after TLK.

Were these movies ever on track though? The first film was mediocre and the other 4 are god awful. Transformers 5 made half the money Transformers 4 made, people are getting sick of these films, because of their many, many flaws.

Maybe Travis Knight may make this movie good, but Bay has the poisoned the well, the world Bay has created in these films makes no sense. These movies just contradict each other, really there is not much for Travis Knight to build on. How could you make a good movie out of this fictional world, that makes no sense?

To be fair though, there are a lot of successful movie series that also don't make sense. Before The Force Awakens I thought Star Wars wouldn't be able to continue in the same continuity because of all the problems and continuity errors in the prequels. Turns out a lot of people enjoy the new Star Wars movies regardless of that. I honestly think it's more important that the individual stories be good than to have a timeline that makes sense overall. Only the dedicated fanbase cares about that.

Unpopular opinion, but I honestly feel like The Last Knight opened new possibilities for the franchise, far more than the '07 film. TLK left me wanting to see more of this world, whereas the first one left me wanting nothing at all.

Okay, but then here's the big question, what elements should Knight take from Bay's world to make his story and want elements should he ignore? These films can't make their mind when the Autobots arrived on Earth, for example, so you have to do a lot of picking and choosing which elements to focus on and which to ignore.

I'd say he should just take whatever elements fit the story he wants to tell. It might even by possible to reconcile the two together. If I were in charge of making one of these movies, I'd err on the side of using the newer stuff since it's probably fresher in people's minds (and is a little more interesting to me).

I don't necessarily see how or why the knights of the round table stuff would/should fit into this 80s prequel. Also, they better not turn John Cena's or Hailee Steinfeld's character into another Witwicky.

I'm not necessarily saying that stuff will fit in, but it's there if they need it. The Last Knight set up a lot for future movies/spinoffs, the WW2 stuff (which I assume will be referenced in the BB movie), Unicron being the Earth, also a lot of historical figures throughout history.

I agree 100% about the second part though.

Bumblebee: The Movie To Become The Focal Point Of Transformers Brand Blueprint

The new movie will test the waters for a low-budgeted series of Transformers movies that will not only be profitable against the breakeven, but will also test for their potential on the hands of another director other than Michael Bay.

Ooh, this has me intrigued. I've thought for a while that Transformers should move into lower budget movies that are more focused instead of just the big spectacle/explosive "save the world from a superweapon" movies. I feel like there's more to explore with smaller scale stories, not to mention it might help remove the "big dumb" stigma that the brand kind of has thanks to Bay.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The article also implies that the Bay-era might end after this year. A few years ago I would have been overjoyed to hear this, but now I'm a little sad. Maybe it's just Stockholm syndrome, lol. But in all seriousness, I felt like the Last Knight opened doors for the franchise to go new places (I honestly sort of saw that as the main goal of the movie). There's a lot to build on after ten years, a lot of it is flawed, but they could still work with it.

A reboot could be fun, but at this point I'm kind of afraid of it just being a G1 clone like a lot of other recent TF stuff. I love G1 (admittedly I wouldn't mind designs that are a bit closer to G1), but I want the story to go new places. I don't want to keep hearing "One Shall Stand One Shall Fall" and seeing endless homages to the '86 movie (not to mention all the nonsensical Aligned mythology that Hasbro wants to cram into everything). I like how the movieverse has steered away from that and created it's own world. If we get a smart reboot I'm fine with it, but I'm just afraid of getting a reboot that's too controlled by Hasbro.

I'm not sad at all. I was ready for it to be over many years ago.

I don't need a reboot to be a G1 clone at all. But I would simply like it to be better than Bay's trash.

Transformers Prime is in no way a G1 clone. It also takes many cues from the Bay films, but it's still superior.

Prime in itself was an okay show, but the Aligned continuity overall was a mess.

Hasbro wanted to create a single universe to be the central (and possibly only) continuity in the TF brand that the cartoons, games, comics and all would tie into. I actually think this is a cool idea as opposed to everything being a separate continuity. I like the idea of a single continuity that builds upon the same story (like Star Wars), it keeps things simple and prevents retreading the same stories each time they reboot with a new cartoon.

The problem is that the execution of this idea was terrible. Hasbro couldn't get everyone to play nicely. The Prime people put zero effort into making their show fit with the War for Cybertron game (which was already in the works). The game studio modified the sequel game to fit better within the Prime universe and the Prime people still wouldn't make any effort for continuity with the games. Eventually Prime had a lot of behind the scenes drama during the creation of the third season. A while back it was revealed that Prime was a mess and sort of killed the Aligned project.

Overall I honestly think Aligned was a bigger mess than Bayformers. Bay's series was bad simply because Bay lacked vision and didn't care about continuity. This could be corrected by hiring talented storytellers and putting them in charge of Bay's universe. The average viewer doesn't care about past continuity errors, they just want entertaining movies moving forward.

The people at Hasbro simply aren't storytellers and have no business touching their own fiction with a ten foot pole(much less a series of feature films). They've shown their ineptitude at storytelling multiple times. If they do a reboot, put talented filmmakers in charge, and leave them be I'm all for scrapping the Bayverse; but if they're going to take tighter control I think there's the potential that it may turn out equally bad.

I didn't love the aligned continuity. However, I like the aligned continuity over Bay continuity, which changes from MOVIE to MOVIE.

Prime was still a good show and we got a lot of good stories out of it.

I'm sorry, but no they weren't. Bay's movies were trash and had no definable characters. He just made big special effects movies with no character development at all. I don't even really care about aligned continuity.

Were the Cybertron games good entertaining games? Yes. Transformers Prime was a good Transformers animated show that lasted 65 episodes and an animated movie. IMHO all were superior as Transformers products over the films.

I agree that those projects are better than Bayformers, individually. But all of those are good because the studios and storytellers that worked on them were talented (High Moon studios, Jeff Kline, etc). Hasbro's role was to unite these projects into one continuity, which they failed at miserably. The individual projects are strong, but Aligned overall is a fail. Keep in mind that Aligned was Hasbro's big future vision for the brand, and somehow they screwed it up. I could see that exact same thing happening with the next attempt at a TF movie series

I'm just worried that Hasbro will run this into the ground too. If they were smart they'd revoke the rights from Paramount (if possible) and find a team of talented filmmakers to oversee a Transformers reboot, and leave them be. I don't think that will happen though.

And I'm not necessarily defending Bay's universe here. I'm all for getting rid of Bay, I just want the series to be in the hands of actual filmmakers who have creative control, not a toy company that will focus on product sales and fanservice.

I remember a Hasbro guy telling me Prime and Cybertron were in canon with each other, and I'm just like...no. Too many contradictions.

Aligned was never going to work because you just had too many people working too many projects to keep them straight.

But to me just because aligned didn't work doesn't mean the products were bad. You could tell playing the Cybertron games and from watching Prime that the people working on them actually loved Transformers. As in they love the lore, the history, the characters, the mythology and the toys.

Yeah, Transformers started as vehicle to sell toys that were like a bunch of unrelated Japanese diaclone toys. But somehow this all coalesced into this compelling story with characters we all fell in love with. And despite some separate continuities and what have you, some amazing stories were told over time. I think if you compare the writing and acting of Transformers compared to other 1980s toy cartoons at the time, I think the writing and storytelling for Transformers is significantly superior, especially the final seasons where the stories got a lot darker and more mature. Where they weren't afraid to explore death and characters dying which you didn't see a lot at the time. People even said kill instead of "destroy."

Now I mean, I love Thundercats and He-Man. But if you go back and watch those old episodes, they don't hold up as well. A lot of the dialogue and acting are just very stiff and clunky and at times awkward along with the storylines. I will say in Thundercats favor that its animation does hold up fairly well and better than most. For He-Man, while I like some of the designs and background art, the animation is almost non-existent throughout that show.

Now by comparison, with Michael Bay, I never got the sense he actually liked these characters and their mythology. I think he just wanted to make a movie with some really fast and sleek looking cars doing cool stuff. Plus his really goofy, awkward sense of humor that tends to degrade both women and minorities.

Now look, I'm not like some ultra PC dude. But here is my point. I'm not saying you should never use that type of humor or use those jokes. But it's so out of place in a Transformers movie. The toilet humor. The sex jokes and humor. All the genitalia references. All the general dorkiness.

None of the humor comes out of the Autobots or Decepticons' personalities unless it's some racist stereotype, like the twins. Just for example, with Wheeljack, his gadgets don't always work. So in one episode, he actually makes a joke about one of his inventions actually working for once. Like we don't really get anything like that. What do we get? We get to know that Wheelie is in love with McKayla so much that he starts humping her leg like a dog. Or Bumblebee will urinate or splooge goo on someone he doesn't like.

Then in Last Knight, for no reason out of nowhere, Cade makes sure to tell Laura Haddock that she dresses like a stripper WTF?

THIS IS TRANSFORMERS! Leave that **** in Family Guy where it belongs. I'm not saying no jokes or humor. But the jokes and humor need to be situational and driven by the characters and their personalities. Bay does not have a knack for good comedy.

Yeah, I can agree with that. I found a couple of the jokes in TLK funny, but I doubt that was Bay's doing (probably the writers or the story group.) One of the jokes may or may not have been lifted from Prime. For every funny joke there were probably 2 or 3 unfunny ones.

I really don't like how crude and vulgar these movies are. The '07 film has endless potty humor (and from what I've seen the sequels do too). TLK didn't have quite as much potty humor, but replaced it with tons of bad language. Both of the "kid friendly" robots say the F-word. Every other word felt like a swear word, even from the kids. I don't why that enhances a movie like this, it's not even trying to be semi-realistic like the '07 film was.

You know what I'd love to see in this movie? A reference to Soundwave's tape deck mode from the classic cartoon.

I'm not saying Soundwave literally has to shrink into a cassette player, just give Hailee Stienfeld's character a Walkman that looks vaguely like G1 Soundwave. Bonus points if they do something clever with it. For instance, maybe Soundwave (in his satellite form) could hack into it to pinpoint Bumblebee's location.

That would be really cool! :woot:

Soundwave will be the cassette player in the Decepticon car. :oldrazz:

Since they like to base Barricade on the Ford Mustang, I'd like to see an 80s version in here somewhere.

You know what else I'd like to see? An opening credits set to cool music instead of an opening action scene. They rarely use opening credits these days, but it would be such an awesome throwback.

There have been several rumors that he'll be in the movie (mostly based on toy leaks), but as far as I know no police car has been seen on set. This has me really curious.

I just pray to God they let him talk in a regular non-annoying voice. No more radio stations. Please.

Don't know if this was posted, but John Cena spoke with Collider briefly a few days ago about his experiences on Bumblebee.

What was the appeal of that, for you? Were you a Transformers fan?

CENA: I was actually alive when they first came out and was at the age to enjoy them. I was a superfan of Transformers and the rival Gobots. I know Transformers is gonna kill me for saying that. To be able to see where the franchise went and where they are taking it now, I thought it was extremely interesting. I can’t talk too much about it, but I really think everyone who enjoys what they were, initially, and what they became, and wants to further the stories, it’s so very story based. It’s so awesome! It’s not too busy. It’s really a fun movie, and I think people are gonna like it.

It’s a cool idea because it can be a part of the Transformers world, but still do its own thing.

CENA: I think so. I think it’s gonna open up the floor, for people who are truly passionate about Transformers, to want to know more about these individual Transformers and the story behind each Transformer.

I’ve been a really big fan of what Travis Knight has done with stop-motion at Laika. How was he to work with, as a director?

CENA: He is awesome! When you wanna redefine the look of something and the feel of something, they chased Travis and really were a fan of his work, as well. I wanted to be a part of the film, but sitting with him and having a 45-minute conversation with him, I really wanted to be a part of the film. He has such passion and such a vision for what he wants to see. Even with this process, he sticks to what he wants ‘cause he can see it. It’s pretty cool, when you just have sticks and artificial stuff, but he sees it. He absolutely sees it, and it’s really impressive.

bumblebee is getting very positive word of mouth from cinema con described as a coming of age story and very intimate

Footage from the CinemaCon panel

Tonight during Paramount's presentation at CinemaCon, filmmaker Travis Knight took to the stage to discuss his upcoming, Bumblebee-centric Transformers spinoff -- and to share a little bit of footage from the film.

ComicBook.com's Brandon Davis shared this account with us:

In a featurette, Knight is shaping figures which later became animated in his earlier films. The cast highlight his ability to see "a drawing on a page brought to life."

He is excited to bring the same details to Bumbleebee, whjere he wants to showcase his love of films like Indiana Jones and Back to the Future. It will be an origin story for Bumblebee and Hailee Steinfeld's Charlie.

"He's taking the story back to the bieginning, set in a period where I first fell in love with Transformers," John Cena says. The video concludes with behind-the-scenes footage of Bumblebee in old bug car form driving away with a camera crane following, and a logo for the film.

Knight takes the stage. He wanted to return to what made the franchise so exciting when it launched, which includes "spectacle" and "lots and lots of explosions." He promises there is "an emotional core the family will come to love." He introduces Hailee Steinfeld, John Cena, and Jorge Lendovore Jr.

Cena riles up the crowd and ultimately thanks the theater owners for their work.

"One last thing before we give this long awaited sneak peek that I'm excited to see myself," he says. "It really was an incredible experience working with Travis...He really is a special kind of storyteller with a sensitive heart. One thing that was incredibly important to me with the relationship between Bee and Charlie Watson was that it was authentic and it was emotional and I think we accomplished that.

Knight introduces the clip, which will see Charlie Watson get her old VW Bug.

An alarm goes off at 8:00 AM. Charlie shuts it off, unhappily waking up. Her room is covered in posters. She rocks out with headphones on while brushing her teeth. In the garage, her car is playing the same song. When she enters, it stops.

A piece of the car hits the floor. She look beneath it. Getting on a board with wheels, she slides under the car. Ultimately, she finds Bee's face, which lights up in the eyes and stands up above her. She's shocked. This thing fits in the garage! They have a standoff. Bee stumbles around. She reaches for the door handle but sees he is just stumbling around and scared as he huddles himself into the corner.

She approaches and says, "Hi." Bee chirps back. He's still scared and avoiding her in the corner. "Do you speak?: she asks. Bee nods to indicate he does not. He stands up, holding his neck, after seeing the wrench in her hand. He analyzes her hands and comes closer, allowing them to touch his face. He can understand her. "What are you?" she asks. "Where did you come from?" He shies away from answering. He points to her shirt. He is asking who she is. "I'm Charlie," she tells him. "Charlie Watson, I'm 18 today. Actually, it's my birthday today. What's your name?" He shies away, with his ears going down. She rules, "You sound like a little bumblebee." That's what she's going to call him from now on. "Matches your outfit, too," she says.

Later, clips of Bee running from a helicopter, trucks exploding, Bee playing on the beach, driving Charlie around, and other Transformers cut into the frame. A red and white winged Transformer is fighting him. He uses his arm cannon. He fights fighter jets. Charlie does her best to help him. He lands in a desert.

#Bumblebee looks like it should have been the first Transformers film. Small, surprisingly sweet, and with some more decent retro-ish designs including a more classic-ish Starscream. Hope he's the villain. #CinemaCon

I've been furiously refreshing Twitter with the hashtags "bumblebeee" and "cinemacon" all day. Some may go as far as to say I'm a nerd with no life.

In all seriousness (although the first part isn't entirely inaccurate, lol) I'm extremely hyped for this movie. That description sounds great, I really hope we see some publicly available footage soon, or even stills of Bee and the other robots.

December can't came soon enough.
