Bumblebee The Bumblebee Spin-Off Official Thread

pretty much, which make for some fun action

Ah okay.

I've actually noticed this too, I don't mind some Autobots like Crosshairs being violent and mean if that's his personality, but I do feel like it would be nice to have a couple kind-hearted Autobots in the mix to balance things out. All of the Autobots from AoE act like jerks at some point in the movie.

They really aren't. Not to mention the movies show Optimus just becoming darker and more rage filled and basically nothing like the Optimus fans hold in high regard.

Prime can be plenty dark and rage filled in the comics. These movies aren't just based on the shows, they have plenty of elements from the comics as well. Agree to disagree on them being well defined. I would throw Megatron in as well.

It was never as bad as Dark of the Moon, Age of Extinction, or The Last Knight.

Can't comment on TLK, but DOTM and AOE gave him good reasons to be mad. I have read many comics and Prime gets rate filled and vengeful there also.

“I know we’re doing a spinoff first in the Bumblebee movie, and that is a very distinctive departure from what you’ve been seeing so far… The objective of that movie is to develop more time with less robots in a way, and to go back to 1985 and go back to sort of the original heritage if you would of the Transformers. G1.”

So it definitely sounds like this movie is doing a G1 homage, which I'm cool with; G1 is where it all started and is probably the most beloved version of Transformers. I've wanted for years that the movies be more like G1 since that's the original incarnation, and although I still want that, I have found more appreciation for new interpretations of Transformers. It's nice that they're giving something to the longtime fanbase.

I actually hope there aren't too many in-your-face references, I don't need to hear "The Touch" playing over the radio or any quotes from the '86 movie, that's all been done to death in this franchise. I would love to see Bee as a VW and some kind of reference to Soundwave's original tape-deck; other than that I hope it's mostly general retro 80s nostalgia, a lot of rock songs and whatnot.

Actually looking forward to the spin off. The comparison to the Iron Giant was interesting.

I'm looking forward to it too, it's been a while, but I remember enjoying the Iron Giant. I like small scale adventure stories about an everyday person who meets an alien or whatnot and befriends them, in some ways more so than typical large-scale action movies that end in city-destroying CGI battles.

Unfortunately TF5 sounds like another mess, so I'm hoping with all the hopes I have that Bay doesn't have too much say in this movie.

Edit: Looks like they're hinting that we might see Bee in his classic VW mode in this movie: http://comicbook.com/movies/2017/06/20/transformers-bumblebee-movie-volkswagen-bug-g1-body/

Please be true!

The robots aren't characters though. Will the robots be characters this time? And who would be the villains?

I would think (or at least hope, lol) that a movie that's being marketed as a Bumblebee spinoff would give Bumblebee halfway decent characterization. I would argue he's one of the better developed ones already, at least he has a few distinguishing character traits.

I'm still curious about what they'll do for villains. I'm probably in the minority, but I'm actually kind of hoping this movie will go very small scale and be more of an adventure, maybe it will focus on the friendship between Bee and his human friend. It technically doesn't even need a villain to be a good story, although I wouldn't mind a villain to show up here and there to add some tension. Maybe just a single villain like Barricade, or some new car-based Decepticon who can die in the end. I'm just really hoping that this one doesn't end in an overblown CGI/explosion-filled destruction fest like most blockbusters do these days.

I guess I just don't see the point or use in doing a Bumblebee-solo movie and can't really grasp how that will work.

the 1980s? He's a VW bug again?

so how does this square with the continuity of the previous movies?

I've seen a lot of people who want Bumblebee to be the beat up '70s Camaro from the 2007 movie in this spinoff, but I don't think he should/will be. It was implied that he took on that disguise to appeal to Sam Witwicky (so he would buy Bee at the car lot), but Sam wouldn't be around in the '80s. If anything he should be an '80s Camaro, or a different car entirely.

I don't think the movie should end with Bee pulling into the car lot from the 2007 film. That would be a really awkward time jump, and I think this movie should distance itself from the Bay movies as much as possible. Just make it a standalone story.

Hailee Steinfeld's character shouldn't be a Witwicky. Not everyone has to be related in movies, and I like the idea that Transformers have adventures with random people. Plus, Shia LaBeouf is the last person you want to bring back memories of, lol.

Just thinking out loud, these are some theories I've seen going around the Internet that I thought I would address while we're waiting for some more news to come in.

Well, these movies have never been known for their strong continuity, but I don't think either of these facts contradict anything in the existing movies.

The movies aren't tied to the original cartoon, so technically he's never been a VW Beetle in this canon. (Actually he was a militarized VW Kubelwagen in the TLK flashback, but it wasn't the same model as the traditional VW Beetle.)

The Last Knight established that Bee has been on Earth since the 40s (at least), so I suppose he was just hanging out, having adventures and looking for the Allspark between then and 2007.

I hope this movie can restore some faith in the franchise. I liked the previous 4, but TLK was awful.

is this possibly being set up as a Herbie the Love Bug type of thing? a wacky races adventure, more geared toward younger kids?

Actually looking forward to the spin off. The comparison to the Iron Giant was interesting.

A Transformers movie in the mold of the Iron Giant was the original premise for a pre-Bay Transformers movie way back when Steven Spielberg was attached to direct. It was to be more like 'a boy and his robot car' movie as opposed to the hideous mess that Bay has given us.

Wow, they really slashed that down after the last Transformers movie basically bombed. They are going low risk on this.

Well, they only gotta deal with one bot and maybe a villainous one.

As a Transformers movie that sounds pretty boring :D

As a TV show, that sounds fine for an episode scenario, but not for a spin-off movie...

Then again, maybe scaling it down will be good for the franchise.

It was Andre Meadows who stated that was the one decent or good aspect of TLK and we're certainly getting more of these genre movies centered on kids.
