Time for my review of Bumblebee. I’m gonna get straight to the point. Simply put, this is hands down the best Transformers film of all time! Yes, even better than The Transformers: The Movie, for all you G1 purists out there. I know, I love me some G1 but it’s not the be all and end all. Having said that, this is the Transformers film that fans have wanted.
The first 5 minutes on Cybertron, I was genuinely like “oh sheeeeit!” lol, especially when you see some of the iconic characters and their designs are recognisable! Some of the characters we’ve seen in the Michael Bay series of films, but they looked nothing like their classic counterparts. They nailed the looks of the characters, Optimus Prime in motion though - absolutely loved it, the still images don’t do him justice. Those first 5 minutes alone were pure joy, was gutted that didn’t last longer but the film had to move on. Not really a spoiler but I’m gutted we didn’t get to see more of Blitzwing, especially after the way he was hyped up. Still looks like Starscream to me though, regardless. As this is an origin film, the lead up to a key moment was predictable, especially after the line that was said. That 1 moment was the only blemish of a good film, but it’s very minor in the grand scheme of things.
Hailee Steinfeld puts in a good performance as Charlie Watson, going through the motions. From teen angst to joy and emotion, she had some really touching moments that tugged at the heart, easily a better lead character than Shia LaBeouf, she had more range in this 1 film than the 3 that he did!
It’s no secret that this film was set in 1987 (best year ever, ahem ) but I have to give credit to the film’s commitment to the 80s setting. The soundtrack was really good, plus the tone and aesthetic was pure 80s. Speaking of 80s, John Cena in the role of Sector 7 agent Jack Burns was good for his acting range, as he played a typical 80s macho man/jock type character. The film is very 80s and it definitely plays like the John Hughes inspired coming-of-age films. A running gag to one of the defining films of the 80s also helps to cement that position. The first time Bumblebee does a particular action in reference to said movie had me laughing out loud. Watching this, I got some vibes from, plus clear and obvious references to, films such as ET, The Love Bug (Herbie films), Big Hero 6 and The Iron Giant, the latter being pretty much homaged during the final act. Also have to give credit to Jorge Lendeborg Jr in the role of Memo, the humans actually came across really well in this film.
Of course, there isn’t really a Transformers film without a battle against the Decepticons. Triple changers Shatter and Dropkick were good, some of the best villains yet, played even better than Megatron within the film series. The transformations of all the robots were glorious and the action was clear, you could make out the parts and see who was punching who. The film stayed consistent to the fighting style Bumblebee has portrayed in the previous films, plus the ending was definitely earned. All in all, Travis Knight delivered a true spectacle and this is how the Transformers should have been from the very beginning. There have been talks of an Optimus Prime solo film. I can only hope it’s a fraction as good as what we got in this film, I really hope Travis Knight returns to helm all future instalments. I give it 8.5 Energon cubes out of 10
