The Catwoman/Selina Kyle Casting Thread - Part 2

I just haven’t seen de Armas in any role that convinces me she has any of the edge I’d want to see in Selina. She’s always been the good, long-suffering wife/girlfriend in just about everything I’ve seen her in. Jaded, mischievous badass seems like it would be quite a stretch to her for me.
Well, based on that scene where she was whispering on Gosling's ear (and the giant hologram scene) she does a perfect sultry voice and I can definitely see her having a playful villanous side. Hathaway playing a femme fatale was also considered a stretch when she was cast, regardless if people turned out to be wrong.

That said, Kirby would be great in the role. I'm still not totally convinced by the Pattinson casting, however.

But Hathaway still had a much wider variety of roles to her name at that time, suggesting she had the range. I've seen De Armas in several things now, and I just don't see much depth to her as an actress at this juncture, beyond being able to play one particular type of character (that ain't Catwoman). I'd be happy to be proven wrong, but Kirby seems like the better actress AND fit for this character to me.

None of her roles screamed Catwoman to me, the skepticism was huge. However I supported the choice. I think De Armas proved to me capable of breathing life into a character with superficial writing with aplomb, I disagree.

Vanessa makes a lot of sense as a candidate. I and others have mentioned this before but they tend to cast people who are on an upward trajectory career-wise and have some “heat” on them. She’s gone from the Crown to Mission Impossible and now to Hobbs and Shaw Fast and Furious spin-off.

Honestly, I still really love Vanessa Kirby for the part. There's been a ton of names we've gone over for Catwoman in the past month or so since Pattinson got the Batman gig, and aside from Sonoya Mizuno, Kirby's got one of the best 'vibes' for Selina in general and the acting chops to match.

Yep. Granted I bet we hear more names soon who could also make a lot of sense for the part too. We're still aways off from Reeves making his final decision, I'm thinking.

Her role in Knock Knock is mischievous and kinda badass, but I'm aware that is not the best flick to go by.

:o

Has anyone suggested...?

Kirby’s one of my faves too, so I hope this is true.

Not only is she a great actress with a great look for it, but her voice, y’all. Granted, I don’t know what she’d sound like with an American accent but with her Brit one it’s so perfectly sultry and Selina-esque, imo.

If she gets the role she needs to keep her Brit accent!

I wouldn't be opposed to that either! But I know some would. I wanted Cotillard to be Catwoman back in the Nolan days so I've never had a problem with the idea of Selina having an accent. But I also get the reasoning behind those who do.

GWW is pretty good overall, they get the casting list and works with production people

Tho I don't think Kirby will get the role now, she was rumored by the same guys for BOP lol

She would be great tho, rooting for her, and expect the physical attacks on her body by trolls once she gets the role. #Annenothotenough

If she can do it I'd prefer going American. Would help differentiate her role from M:I and the upcoming Hobbs/Shaw flick, which looks to be similar.

I like Kirby, but she seems like the type of gal who doesn't shave her pits and would make me pluck the one hair from her mole. We would then get in shouting match because we have guest coming and she isn't ready. Granted, 10 min of work and she'd looks divine after that, but I don't know what to make of it.

No british accent for Selina. She needs to be born and raised in Gotham and have everything in her persona demonstrate that.
So no De Armas for you then? There's no chance in hell she'll be able to pull off an American accent. She's not a native English speaker.

Actually I think a lot of the backlash will be more to do with her not being Latina, judging by DC fans' reactions on Twitter...

That said, I think Kirby's more likely to get the role here than she was for BOP. Part of it comes down to the teams involved for both projects; Cathy Yan and Margot Robbie prioritized casting more diversely for Black Canary (which isn't a bad thing at all), while I think Reeves will prioritize acting chops.

Also Kirby can do an American accent, so she'll probably do that for the part.

I'm flexible with Selina. She can be a British socialite that emigrated to the United States and creates the Catwoman persona because she is a thrillseeker. Wouldn't bother me.

I have no accent preferences either. There are things I'd like to see - I want the "Robin Hood" version of her where her crusade is against Gotham's elite and she's sharing with the people in the slums...but that version can still be an immigrant or have non-Gotham origins. I'm not picky.

Selina being a british socialite basically removes... 60% of what makes her character interesting and her dynamic/contrast with Batman layered.
Batman TAS did something like that and the result was probably the most uninteresting and bland portrayal of Selina. She's not supposed to be just "Female Bruce Wayne".

Nah. Selina is at her most interesting when she's a girl that was born and raised in Gotham in the lowest class of all, goes through a terrible life and becomes a thief upon seeing the arrival of Batman, using her looks and charms to be able to fool rich people into inviting her to fancy parties. It makes her dynamic with Batman and the way she operates more interesting rather than just being a socialite kleptomaniac.

ya pretty sure Brits, Italians, Indians etc migrate to US and can speak in their own accents if they want...unless Gotham has accent killing pollution or something.

Brit accent is just so much hotter than American accent lol, sorry USA

You do know people can still migrate to other countries and still be in the lower lower class right? Regardless of where they come from?

I kind of like the idea of "British socialite" being a made-up persona she just kind of conned her way into, now that you mention it. Could be fun.
Yep. Like Irene Adler in Sherlock Holmes.
