The Catwoman/Selina Kyle Casting Thread - Part 2

I have no doubt De Armas is talented... but is she talented enough to portray the edge, complexity and depth Catwoman should have? I have my doubts about that, especially next to Pattinson.

Ana has gone toe to toe with Edgar Ramirez, she'd be fine next to Pattinson.

She did but... what type of character did she play? From the plot synopsis it seems to be just your standard love interest and Selina is not that at all, she's supposed to have depth to her character, complexity, multiple layers to her. Pattinson will no doubt add a lot of layers and complexity to his performance as Batman, can Ana de Armas do that? What about her screen presence, how is that gonna look like in that type of role? Has she ever been cast in any role that requires her to do that? Can she be something more resembling to a leading lady?

Because sure, she's worked with a lot of great directors, but unless I'm missing something, the characters she's been cast to play haven't been that complex to begin with.

Son, that is what actors do. Say what? Of course she isn't going to act like Selina in that boxing movie, man, she is playing a real life character in that. But it also tells me she'd be fine going up against Pattinson for one thing, Edgar Ramirez isn't no chump with no acting skills. She also got cast to play Marlyn Monroe and will no doubt take great discipline and great acting technique to not only sound like her but get rid of her accent. That takes real acting chops.

IF she were to be cast, are you all of a sudden going to question Matt Reeves after champion him for his casting of Battinson? Yes, I have no doubt Ana can add all that complexity you go on about, I would also trust Reeves and his writing. It also comes down to the material. Them Xmen flicks is filled with great talent, but we saw how they ended up.

Exclusive: Ana de Armas Eyed to Play Marilyn Monroe in Andrew Dominik's 'Blonde'

If she gets cast I'll trust Reeves judgement, I just kinda doubt she will. Although I will say that had Armie Hammer been cast as Batman I'd have been pretty sure de Armas would get Selina.

Also, has she really been cast as Marilyn Monroe? The only official article I found saying that is this one which says she's on early talks and the project hasn't even been greenlit. No update since then. Maybe there's a followup I haven't found, but she's not the first actress that has been mentioned for this role either.

I thought Hugh Jackman was the front runner?

According to John Campea Daisy is indeed being eyed for Batgirl.

Even if that thing from We Got This Covered is true... there's no way in hell they get Chloe Grace Moretz for Catwoman.

"She was a great get for my movie, Let Me In...I'm also going to have Kodi play The Riddler"

I feel like Catwoman is one of those roles that can go “eh” really fast. The iconic performances (60s and Returns) added something to her while Hathaway was just sort of there in the movie. I’ve only seen clips of Berry but that was a misstep from jump.

The character is at baseline just a burglar. Her dynamic in Gotham is what makes her memorable so the actress would need to make her stamp in some fundamental way.

Admittedly I've only seen the trailer for The Love Witch so far, but from that brief sampler, I'm not sure I get the hype around Samantha Robinson there. Maybe I'll get it if I see the film in full later?

As for Ana de Armas, I think the questioning against her range is valid, but my takeaway is that if she does wind up landing the role, then she'll have demonstrated in auditions and probably a screentest with Pattinson that she has what it takes to play Selina. For now, she's a question mark in that regard.

Daisy Ridley's a top tier actor and I wouldn't complain if she were cast as either Batgirl or Catwoman, but admittedly she's not my first pick for the latter role.

Working with those directors and she still without making a memorable rol, showing some great acting or proving something more. I don't think you made a good point.

Anyways..
If Matt watch Climax, it's done for Sofia. Now that's what you call showing off acting chops.

I would argue De Armas was a highlight as Joi in Blade Runner 2049. She's demonstrated that she has a presence at the very least. It's more a question of what sort of range she may or may not have that factors in here.

As for Sofia, I'm not sure how likely she is to be a candidate for the gig, considering her age. Obviously the age range on the casting breakdown is more of a guideline than a rule, but I struggle to picture Reeves casting someone closer to 40 than 30 for a role that they'll likely be playing for the next decade.

She was just a stereotyped sex symbol there. And some posts here just prove that, but to be fair in general nobody talks about acting in this thread. She's far of being some tragic option like Eiza (yikes) of course.

My #1 pick would still be Sofia Boutella, who gave us one of the best performances of last/this year with a sucha metamorphosis act.

But I really don't care about this. The only thing that would worry me is if they choose Josh Gad.:whatever:

She has a timeless beauty I think, and likewise bears a strong resemblance to classic (and some modern) depictions of the character. I'm not all that familiar with her acting chops myself, though.

Well, no, Joi actually had one of the most thought provoking parts in 2049 IMO and I think de Armas played the part well. However I will concede that Joi as an individual wasn't necessarily a super complex character herself that required a ton of talent to play.

A lot of the memorability from her comes down to de Armas' general vibe and presence and the way Villeneuve and the screenwriters opted to depict her in relation to K's personal story.

I mean, if Boutella were to get the job, I wouldn't complain. She's a solid actor and I can see her in the role. It's more about the overall factors that surround this specific iteration of the character and what Reeves seems to have planned for his films as a collective whole that give me pause.

Yeah, I get that her appearance is on point. And admittedly the character she plays in The Love Witch seems to be a bit closer to Selina than say Joi in 2049 is, but I'm not really sure I see much acting range from her in the trailer or that she can even play that archetype especially well. She just seems to be doing a homage to the actresses that starred in various Hammer horror films that came out in the 60's and 70's.
