The Catwoman/Selina Kyle Casting Thread - Part 2

Also, isn't Selina part latina in some of them comics?

It's been suggested she has Italian heritage.

''Batman: Dark Victory, the sequel to The Long Halloween, implies that Catwoman suspects she is the long-lost illegitimate daughter of Carmine Falcone, although she finds no definitive proof of this. Selina's connection to the Falcone family is further explored in the miniseries Catwoman: When in Rome. Though more circumstantial evidence is added to the theory of Selina's Falcone heritage, no definitive proof is provided.''

Get Waititi and Morrison on the phone and hook up with a Maori actress, you'd get immediate endorsement from Momoa and Rock =P

We'd get a DCPU, DC Polynesian Universe, that'd be pretty unique

FYI, there's also a comic in which she's described as the daughter of a Cuban mother and an Irish father, which is likely what BN was referring to. However, this particular origin story has rarely if ever been mentioned again since its inception. What's more is that it was recounted by Harley Quinn of all characters, not Selina herself. Make of that what you will. Some fans take it as gospel, though, even though they never even read the damn issue! lol You can always tell because they erroneously describe her father as "American", rather than Irish, which is how he's actually described in said comic.

As for the Italian/Falcone origin, I'm not sure if that came before or after the aforementioned Quinn story. If it's the latter, then I suppose you could say that the Irish/Cuban tale was retconned by DC. If it's before, then vice versa. Here's where it gets even more confusing, though. During the New 52, Selina discovered that she was indeed the daughter of an Italian-American crime lord, just not the Italian she had long suspected to be her father. His name? Rex Calabrese. As it turns out, Calabrese used to run the Gotham City mob before Falcone supplanted him. Selina, whose birth name is apparently Selina Calabrese, even ran his organization for some time when he came back to Gotham. You can read more about that here.

Other writers prefer to keep her origins deliberately ambiguous (she's a bit like the Joker in that sense.) Aside from describing her as a former stray who bounced around from orphanage to foster home, they don't really delve into her roots all that much.

I really like that Catwoman and the Joker's true origins have always been shrouded in mystery. Usually when iconic characters like Wolverine or Han Solo receive origins stories years after being introduced it's a let down.

Catwoman's backstory is not a mystery at all. Pretty much all writers agree she's an orphan and had to grow up on the streets. Details may change from continuity from continuity (which happens fot every character) but comparing that with Joker is a bit too much of stretch whem there's quite a bit of stories saying her mother killed herself, her father died some way and she grew up on the lower ends. Heck, for the most part the prostitution point in her life has been maintained. It's not like she's Donna Troy lmao Selina is eay more consistent

I'll just reiterate my earlier post that Sofia Pernas is exactly who should be cast. Other than not being "A-List" she fits everything to a tee. I don't necessarily want another Batman film where they load up on names despite them being so so for the parts. Just get the right actors, the film will sell itself

Clip of her in Blood and Treasure. .

I agree with this. Selina's origins are pretty clear. I even remember (Batman Ego), Darwyn Cooke fleshed out Selina's pre-Catwoman mob days even more. By introducing Stark as her old mentor who essentially taught her everything he knew. Her past isn't exactly a mystery

That being said, Rose Salazar is becoming one of my fav choices

So Kroll said he thinks Selina's casting will drop in October and that he heard "interesting names" (whatever that means). I'm scared, I hope it's good!

That some of the details surrounding Selina's origin keep changing is what makes her background a tad mysterious or convoluted, especially if you don't follow her exploits in the comics religiously. Nevertheless, if you're looking for some consistency based on most of what we've been told about her thus far, here's what you get as I see it.

- Selina Calabrese is born to Rex Calabrese, former head of the Italian mob in Gotham
- Carmine Falcone supplants Calabrese, forcing him to go on the run and leave Selina behind
- Selina, now a stray, ends up at the orphanage and the occasional foster home
- An Irish and Cuban couple, respectively Brian and Maria Kyle, become her foster parents for a short time before Selina goes on the run again
- Selina eventually discovers that she has ties to the Italian mob, suspecting Carmine and Louisa Falcone to be her parents -- the trail runs cold
- Years later, Selina is finally reunited with her actual birth father, Rex Calabrese and temporarily assumes control of his criminal enterprise

She eventually parts ways with Calabrese, and we enter the Rebirth era.

Of course, given that Selina's a fictional character, you can ignore all that and imagine her as you see fit to. After all, she managed to sustain relevance for well over 50 years before any details surrounding her parentage were applied thus.

Interesting names? Hmm.

Interesting names? Hmm.
From his tone and context of his overall spiel, it sounded like they're all big names and attractions. I wouldn't expect anything below A-list at this point.

I think Reeves is setting out to make his debut a real splash. It already seemed that way from the multi-villain thing, but even with the cast it looks to be an assembly of either elite talents or stars.

Vanessa Hudgens

I could see her falling under the category of "Interesting names", given her musical past. And honestly, she could probably be great in the role. She at least has personality.

Call it a hunch, but I'm guessing by "interesting names" are actors that most audiences wouldn't immediately think of for a role, but wind up being perfect for the part once you sit down and mull it over. Like Pattinson for Bruce or Wright for Gordon.

If I had to guess, based on what we've heard here and there over the past month, Janelle Monae is probably one of those "interesting names."

Well, every single name we've been discussing lately (Salazar, Naomi Scott, Ana de Armas, Hudgens and Janelle) can be clasified as interesting.

It's a shame he won't just come out and tell us what he's hearing. On the other hand, given what fandom culture has become in recent years, I can see why he might not want to do that just yet.

He noted on that episode he makes a point to hold off on scuttlebutt until he's assured the report he puts out is concrete. It's why he has the reputation for being so reliable. Doesn't really partake in the rumor game.

Seeing as he already has names, I think we're a few weeks away from something exclusive once the negotiations come into play. He seemed very excited about potentially breaking the casting news, so he's definitely being aggressive in nailing down the one name that actually matters.

Actually the reason why he's not saying it is mainly that he doesn't want agents screaming in his phone and e-mails lol

I thought he just gets names from the trades, it's up to him on whether he wants to ruin the deal-making and p*** off the studios or report it when studios wants him to to keep getting goodies from them. =P
