The Catwoman/Selina Kyle Casting Thread - Part 2

Call it a hunch, but I'm guessing by "interesting names" are actors that most audiences wouldn't immediately think of for a role, but wind up being perfect for the part once you sit down and mull it over. Like Pattinson for Bruce or Wright for Gordon.
I wouldn't agree with either of that casting.

Sis... she looks 15.

That's partially because us forum-dwelling folk tend to spend far more time and energy thinking about this sort of thing than the average fan/movie goer. Or reporters and scoopers for that matter, it seems.

When I hear the phrase "interesting names" or the like tossed around by scoopers or reporters with connections, it rarely ever turns out to be a name that shocks me or doesn't make sense- because usually it's a name I'll have talked with someone about on the Internet already before, because we tend to fall into a rabbit hole of names of actors and actresses that could potentially play a role in order to keep the conversation somewhat interesting for us.

Take the Vanessa Kirby rumor that bubbled up this past summer? One scooper who'd heard the name ahead of it being dropped publicly tweeted about their surprise on the name and thought it was an "interesting" choice- but it was an actor that us here in the thread had been bouncing back and forth with for awhile!

We're not the norm here. So when Justin Kroll teases that Reeves is looking at "interesting names" for Catwoman, that doesn't necessarily mean it'll be someone none of us here ever spitballed or guessed- if anything, we've probably already brought them up several times in the past by now.

Have we talked about Samara Weaving's wrist tattoo?

I would love her as Selina but that's not happening.

It's like I always say. I'll believe it when Kroll or Kit report it.

Of the various names that have been popping up lately in the rumor cycle, Janelle Monae probably makes the most sense- she fits the profile of the sort of serious actors that Reeves typically goes for (Pattinson, Wright, Hill). Plus she co-starred with Mahershala Ali in both Moonlight and Hidden Figures, and we know Reeves initially approached him for Gordon.

Samara Weaving is becoming quite the big star and with her scoring big role after big role now; her latest being Bill & Ted 3 being cast as Alex Winter's daughter in Bill & Ted: Face the Music (2020) if she were to be cast as Selina Kyle...it would be one of the best casting choices bar none

20 actually . And again. I get the argument that it doesn't matter if a woman is older, heck, every single relationship I've had is with someone 2-5 years older than me. But I don't think it's necessary to get an older actress for Selina when the character doesn't really require it as it always has this youthful energy to her and there's a lot of young talent that could play her.

hmm

I was aware of her music career (Dirty Computer is a damn good album, check it out), but didn’t know she was an actress. Huh.

She's a legit actress too, at least based on those two roles, unlike a lot of other singer-turned-actors like Beyonce or Ed Sheeran. I don't really see her as Catwoman personally, but I'd certainly take her over Vanessa Hudgens, lol.

I've actually been a fan of her music since shortly before The Electric Lady came out in 2013! It's almost criminal that it's taken so long for the public eye to really start to notice her IMO. :funny:

She definitely hasn't played a Catwoman type character yet on film, so I get what you mean, but that doesn't mean she can't do it either. Like you said- she's a legit actress. And if you watch her live performances or music videos, you'll quickly notice that she's absolutely got the charisma and sensuality needed for a part like Selina.

I don't have a gag reflex anymore. The diversity agenda has been shoved down my throat too many times.

Oh sure, just go with this argument of all things.

Selina's been portrayed as a woman of color on and off now for decades. Eartha Kitt played her in the Batman 66 show, she's depicted as African American in the new DC Super Hero Girls cartoon show and is set to also be African American in the upcoming Harley Quinn animated series on DC Universe too. And of course, there's that one backstory in the comics of her being Half-Cuban that's bubbled its way into canon a few times since the 1990's.

Selina being played by a woman of color makes total sense.
