The Dark Knight The Composite Christopher Nolan Interview Thread

Really good, interesting interview with Nolan. On the subject of Nolan "not thinking about sequels", I think what he means is, rather than thinking about what he's going to hold back for sequels or whatever, he just tries to make each film as complete and fulfilling a cinematic experience as possible, goes all-out with it. And when it comes to the sequels, he'll think about them when he gets to them.

I'm so glad he said Harvey Dent is one of the strongest aspects of the story. I was worried he'd be forced into the background.

^ Yeah, about time Dent was given justice on film.

Howdy! A long time lurker, first time poster all the way from Finland. My english isn't perfect so I hope you guys just bare with me. First of all, quite the forum you guys have here. There are some movie forums here in Finland, Batman threads etc. but nothing compared to this thing you call SHH. Batman Begins was a big deal here few years ago and now the anticipation for TDK is going through the roof. I think there is something about the character that really connects with the finnish people. Batman has always been such a beloved character here in Finland. And we are calling him "Lepakkomies" by the way. The Joker is "Jokeri" and Two-Face is "Kaksinaama". You just gotta love our language!

But anyway. Such a cool interview! Too bad Chris Nolan doesn't do any commentaries. I think he is a very pleasant guy to listen to and his thougths about film making are alway interesting. I've been watching the Begins DVD extras over and over again just to hear the man talk! Great director without a doubt.

Welcome, or should I say Tervetuloa. ;D

I think that interview was awesome, especially now when we have read like 2 or 3 interviews with Heath Ledger and he has only said the same things over and over again. What I thought was cool too, was that Nolan is really open and honest about TDK, the way he talked about the Two-Face bar scene and so on.

I just hope he already wants to do a 3rd film deep down inside. It seriously would suck if we get set up for Two Face and he doesn't want to direct the 3rd.

It's interesting how each interview and press release seem to give off information that contradicts the one before it. Premiere said that Goyer & Nolan had a trilogy laid out, Empire says that he never intended to do a sequel, now he says that he never thinks about sequels. It's not that big of a deal (other than the fear that he might not do a third), but its weird.

I think Nolan/Goyer had plans to do 3 films but didn't do any extensive planning on the other films until they got BB completed. They might have done a very rough story arch but thats it.

IGN: So it's expected that the third film will focus more on Two-Face. Will it be a solo story for him or will there be another, secondary villain included in it?

The way Nolan off-hands this Q makes me think Harvey is turning into Two Face then getting offed in this film.

He won't. Nolan has commented various times that he hated how they killed the villains in the old franchise.

On the flip side of that, I really hope he doesn't do a 3rd film just for the sake of doing a 3rd film. It would suck more if film 2 was awesome yet film 3 (as often happens) was the opposite.

I think he wanted to do a trilogy he just says nothing is set in stone.

I like that Joker is gonna have a weird walk. It seems they really put a lot of thought into the character and try to make him something we have never seen before.

Ahh, a fellow finn! But we shall not speak finnish here b/c that is very rude to our hosts ;D

The Joker's weird walk was something I didn't know about. That sounds very interesting indeed. I bet it's not like he's injured or anything. Maybe his walking style is a bit twitchy and jittery. You know, in order to underline his unstable state of mind.

yeh the walk is all part of the totally psycho messed up Joker Ledger is going for :)

My god, finally an interviewer with some f'n sense. He asked all the important questions I've had, so kudos to that guy. Took a damn year, but it finally got done.

My only complaint was Nolan completely sidestepped that permawhite issue, lol. Could be something, I don't know. It's certainly not nothing though.

I love that he apparently has a weird walk. It's surprising how much you can convey with a walk - people are able to recognize each other from afar simply by their posture and walk.

Very cool that Harvey will finally be done respectfully as well! It makes sense - Joker will always be crazy, he'll never change. So you can't base an entire movie on him, because he'll never have a character arc.

looks like a lot of details were put into the joker .walking?

details and details

Well, that seems to settle the perma-white issue. No surprise, really. Joker with a bizarre style of walking sounds great. Can't wait to see that. AMH's role is confirmed, after all the speculation people had about him being The Riddler etc.

Very informative interview

Well, it looks like the rumors about Chris Nolan mad about the JLA movie have been proven false. He seemed like he didn't mind. :brucebat:

Just cause he said he's a journalist doesn't necessarily mean he's not The Riddler... I don't think he is.. but what nolan said didn't dispell it at all...

Right on. Especially if the person is menacing. The Joker is one sick SOB so there should always be something unsettling about the way he moves.

I have to say I like the kind of slouch he seems to have in the pictures as well...

That was a good interview , I like how Chris Nolan explains how the stills we have seen of the Joker , dont really capture the character ....

''but what he does in the film is very difficult to capture in stills to be perfectly frank. It's one of the reasons we wanted to show this sequence as well, to get his introduction out there. It's the total package. It's the way he moves, the way he is, it's the way he inhabits the character. I'm just so excited by it. I think people will be really blown away by it.''

The Dark Knight sounds so epic ... cant wait . I would be interested in hearing him talk about the viral marketing , the websites etc , just his responce to it . Mind you I think his brother Jonah would answer that better , I read Jonahs more a web surfer .

"Nolan: I wouldn't want to give away too much about this film, but the thing I will say, and I said it a lot about Batman Begins and it was genuinely the truth, is I don't think in terms of sequels. I think in terms of making this film the best film it can be and the most complete film it can be."

You may not, but Warner sure does.

Nolan is a ****ing fantastic director. TDK sounds incredibly ambitious and I'm utterly pumped for it. He said he took some inspiration from Heat. Which, in a way is the ultimate epic cops and robbers flick. TDK might become the ultimate epic superhero movie.

Heh, love how he dodged the makeup question. He wants to keep people guessing until the end. ;)
The way Nolan off-hands this Q makes me think Harvey is turning into Two Face then getting offed in this film.
I can't see that happening at all. To give us a serious depiction of Two-Face and then kill him off just minutes after his reveal would be an even bigger slap in the face to fans than what Schumacher did with the character.

Well I doubt he'll be the guy that makes the crossword puzzles.
