The Daily Planet Vol. 2: Superman News and Speculation Thread (🚨TAG SPOILERS🚨)

Early reviews have me worried. Being too silly was one of my greatest concerns in the first place when I heard Gunn would helm Superman. Gunn is friends with Zack Snyder and worked with him on one film, but it seems clear enough that Gunn didn't like Man of Steel.

I'm indifferent. I still want Superman taken seriously, but I don't want a overly dark tone like Snyder's take, especially not like BvS. I feel like the red trunks and bagginess make the suit look sillier than it's actually supposed to. I appreciate David Corenswet's perspective on Superman that he doesn't want kids to be afraid of him, hence he wears a pair of trunks...deliberately??--so he can be laughed at? Interesting interpretation, but I don't want Superman to be seen as a joke. I like his positive perspective though.

I'm all for humor, just hope Gunn seriously doesn't go overboard. Snyder's films were almost completely devoid of any humor at all. Every time Snyder did have some humor included, you just wish the films had more. Even The Dark Knight trilogy had more humor in it, and it had just the right amount of balance for its overall serious tone. As Corenswet did state, Superman is still a "badass" when he's saving the day and in battle. That alone might be enough to win me over. I hope it does live up to that expectation.

I'm not against an emotional Superman, or a Superman that is 'huggable' because that is what Superman should be. He should be a beacon.

When Gunn announced he was writing, I didn't even know he was a Superman fan. I knew Gunn liked unique characters that were less popular and that he was a massive comic book fan, but the fact that he was even offered to direct Superman before he took on The Suicide Squad had me wondering. I've been convinced he gets the character better than Snyder. I just worry about the humor going overboard and being flat or cringe. This film has to succeed for DC's sake. I kind of worry that showing too many clips or maybe even marketing is draining out the anticipation for the movie.

I'm pretty tired of feeling like an executive or a studio investor that factors in budgets and reviews and critic reactions. I just want to sit and watch and enjoy a movie, dammit. I really don't want the discourse around movies lately to affect my viewing experience. It feels like I'm always comparing my own thoughts with what has been discussed ("this wasn't that bad", "it's better than the RT score"). It's such a sh**y way of watching movies. I'm tired of defending or making an argument on why I like or dislike something. Sorry, I just had to put it out there. Moving on.

Whatever may be in the media about this movie, I am going in with an open mind. I plan on seeing this movie AS I WANT TO SEE THIS MOVIE.

maybe it is just a function of age, but I am not hitting the panic button early. That may change in a few days, but for now I am blissfully unaware of the behind the scenes machinations.

Some people have an edge, a vendetta or a chip against this movie. I can see it, you should as well. We will know more in the next 36-48 hours. Why let others ruin your happiness. See the movie first, then go from there

I get that, it's the consequences of the start of a new cinematic universe, if this was just another superhero film from an established and moderately successful franchise, Superman scoring bad reviews would've sucked yes, but wouldn't impact the DCU that much, unless there was, say a string of failures in a row, it's one of the few silver lining Disney/Marvel get to have for establishing the MCU, even if F4 fails and marvel ends up with 3 underperforming films this year, they still have Avengers and many more films to make bank on.

Superman has waaaay more riding on it then nearly every film releasing this year, this might be the one film of 2025 that if it fails, could heavily impact years of films releasing in the coming years, it really does need to be a critical and commercial success if the DCU wants to have any hope of surviving an already saturated superhero film market in the near future.

i checked my showing and there's hardly any seats sold in there so far.
but i am watching on a late afternoon on the 2nd weekend of this.
watching with very few people around is ideal for me though.

Maybe that is true...but not for us.

The Sunday Times broke the embargo. They gave it a very positive review.

Rocha is the definition of a drama queen and always seems to find a negative angle in everything he discusses. Not surprising given he platforms Sneider. There's far more objective YouTubers in the movie space such as Harloff or Campea.

Same here. I may just stay away from social media for a while (I need to be doing that anyway) until the movie.

These days anyone with a camera, a microphone and large following wants to tell you what to watch or what not to watch, what to like or what not to like.

If I don't end up loving this movie, then I'm a Snyder cultist who can't let go of the past. If I DO love it, then I'm a James Gunn/WB shill.

Heaven forbid I decide for myself what I like and what I don't. Okay, rant over.

Opening weekend is sold out here too. Hyped to see a movie on opening night with a packed theatre. As someone with kids, I usually end up seeing movies on streaming or a few weeks after the movie has already come out lol.

I'm one of those people that goes in the middle of the day on a weekend to see a movie just to avoid large crowds, but this is actually the first time in a LONG time where there's several movies coming out in one year that I want to see with a packed audience, starting with Superman.

I want to have the same experience and feel the way I did when I walked out of Avengers: Endgame.

Why would you want to feel like you wasted almost three hours? :o

More seriously, I like quiet audiences, but I can understand that some people enjoy an energetic crowd.
As long as they cheer with the movie and don't act like they're at a random party where the movie just happened to be shown...

I'd said I'd wait until the end of the month, but I'm beginning to wonder if I shouldn't try to find a screening earlier. The idea is still to go at a time when it's not too crowded, it's just that I don't want to be too "out of the loop" of the passionate debates that are about to begin...
