The Daily Planet Vol. 2: Superman News and Speculation Thread (🚨TAG SPOILERS🚨)

Reactions seem a lot more mixed from what I'm seeing.
I've just read a mega-thread compiling the first reactions.
From what I saw, it's mostly positive, even very positive, but there are definitely a few flaws that come up regularly.
Like the fact that the film may be a bit overstuffed (but it seems to be more about lore and concepts than characters) or that the narrative/pacing is a bit off. BUT, virtually every time, the reviews point out that all this is outweighed by the pure fun of everything else. Which, honestly, sums up what I think of the many Gunn films I've seen : structurally flawed but generally entertaining. And frankly, it's a lesser evil!

I think the movie will be well received by professional critics. I still expect the audience to be a bit more disivise though, even without the lame US politics debates.
Here in France per example, even after the 2010' golden age of CBM and more mature films, there's still a strong idea of superheros being silly and so, I guess a Superman leaning hard in Silver Age won't talk to everybody. WOM will be fairly decisive imo.

But really, I think everything points to the film being a success.

I was told by somebody that I wouldn't like the film. :argh:

I bet it starts out in the upper 80s and settles at the mid to lower 70s.

I've been doing extremely well with what I am allowing myself to see for Superman but I woke up this morning with that Christmas-like gut excitement and the reactions thus far have not disappointed! I can't wait to open my gift on July 10th at 6:40pm with my Kryptonian crew :legacy:

I start off the week with leg day and finish the week with leg day. Mostly heavy kettlebell work. I hit atleast 17k steps with my job nightly. It's extremely important. Legs feed the wolf. 🔥 I've had a few sports injuries to my quads and left knee, but legs are genetic anyhow lol.

Hot take: I don't give a rip about the shirt rip. :o

Aside from Reeve and Cain, the other live-action Supermen have had Supersuits that don't believably go underneath clothes at all (and even with them....where is the cape?!?!). It's a fact I have no problem ignoring.....until they do the stupid shirt rip to remind me. And yes, I have no trouble rolling with the glasses disguise. This is just the bridge I can't cross. :funny:

Spider-Man did it, though. :sadcat:

More like Smallville fans. As big of an abomination as Josstice was, the shirt rip was within' 4 years.
Oh I didn't know he did it in the Joss Whedon one. The Zack Snyder one had the black suit still which was strange.

And thematically made ZERO sense. The black suit was fine. But that final shot was supposed to show Superman's return and embracing of his role. Instead he's still got the black suit. One more example of Zack Snyder getting in his own way ... and don't get me started about the Martian Manhunter reveal or the newly shot "teasers" after the actual ending... Holy ****ing moly, talk about sabotaging your own movie.

I can't believe it's been 12 years since Man of Steel and 19 years since superman returns.

Can't wait to watch this one to see how it is. Even though I don't really care about critics and social media reactions when it comes to movies, superman has had such a tough time connecting with the general audience on film, which is a shame because I think the character has a lot to offer and it sounds like they may have nailed that.

it’s nice to wake up and see the good verbal reception, but I won’t be fully relaxed until that’s stupid tomato website that everyone gives so much power to reflects the sentiment

Just think about some of the best comic book movies that general audience and fandom love that have a score less than 90%

Don't weigh too much on the rotten tomatoes score. Go into the movie with your own expectations.

That's understandable and one of the many charming reasons with the Superman mythos that isn't supposed to make any sense lol. But the prior Super-suits were sleek enough to atleast trick the eye and suspension of belief. David is huge and his suit is of thick material, so it will be a tougher sale. But he is wearing over-sized clothing ala All-Star in Gunn's version, so that should be interesting. :legacy:

I agree about never trusting RT scores, but pretty much all the most beloved comic book movies have had great RT scores over 90% lol

The Dark Knight, Spider-Man 2, Iron Man, Avengers, Black Panther etc

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 & 3 have 85% and 82% (and they're both GREAT IMO)

Outside of James Gunn's CBMs Super, which I happen to love, has 50% (his only feature as a director that has a rotten rating). Slither has 87%.

Batman and Batman Returns have 77% and 82%

Batman Begins and The Batman have 85%

I could go on and on making examples, but ultimately.. who cares?

My favorite CBM (by far) that Gunn has made is his lowest-rated one on RT (GotG Vol. 3), so I know the critics and I aren't totally aligned on his stuff...BUT we do agree they're all generally well-made films/shows, so if this gets an actual bad score on RT it will certainly be cause for concern on my end. But a "good, just not as good as some of his others" score will bode perfectly well for me based on our Gunn track record lol.
