The Daily Planet Vol. 2: Superman News and Speculation Thread (🚨TAG SPOILERS🚨)

The final scene with Superman and Lex… I don’t think there’s ever been anything more faithful to the comics than that, I had literal chills

You could feel the hatred radiating off of Nic Hoult, the veins were literally popping out of his head lol

For all of the minor tone/aesthetic things that may have fallen a little short, they really did nail the most important aspects in terms of character development and chemistry

Just saw Jeremy Jahns didn't like it and he's usually easy to please. :(

Also the usual suspects didn't like it like Tyrone, but we all knew that.

I don't watch Jeremy a lot, but the little bit I've seen he usually seems pretty fair. It seems to me. His likes and dislikes are all over the place though.

It is hilarious to me see the people you'd expect to not like the movie and have been trashing it in the lead up sticking to their grift.

Nerdrotic, Snarky Jay, Geek & Gamers, Tyron, Film Junkie, etc. They are all doubling down on their negative takes.

Are they going nuts over there trying to predict the box office or did they just hate the film?
When the nimrod from The Daily Beast broke them embargo to trash the film they apparently went crazy thinking the reviews would suck and the film would bomb, I didn't read any of it because that site is pretty divisive on a good day.

Angry Joe seemed to like it, but not love it.

He's a Snyder fan that did it to create negative attention for the film.

I've had a look at the main cinema site here, and out of 28 press reviews listed, the film scores 3.2/5, and 3.3/5 for the audience, out of 328 votes (but it's only the day of release, so that score doesn't mean much yet).

I wanted to compare the difference in perception with US critics, and it's interesting. If the satirical aspect is perceived as too caricatural to be truly interesting, it's the whole idealistic and heroic (some would say "poetic" and, even "romantic") aspect that is enshrined.
There's also talk about a blockbuster that “smells of the '80s", not in a gimmick sense but in its way of aiming at pure spectacle, without cynicism and with an assumed kitschness, in stark contrast to the rest of today's production.

Overall, it's great! Even if the tone doesn't talk to everybody (like I suspected in an earlier post), the film is still globally saw at a solid and singular effort.
An interesting quote : "Gunn took the job seriously without taking himself too seriously."
That quote is 100% true. To me this felt like a guy who read Superman comics who wanted to put a Superman comic on the screen so everyone could feel how he felt. I mean most directors would not have gone as far into some of the stuff as he did and honestly I think he is the only one who can get away with it.

Anyone else whose seen it, did you get a bit of a live action Scooby Doo vibe from this? And I mean that in a good way, because I love those movies lol

And they were written by Gunn himself
Oh of course!

For the first time in quite a while I decided to read a review...I think Variety kind of nailed it. Its not a top tier CBM (like say The Dark Knight) but it is in that next level with Batman Begins or Iron Man. Its a very good film (to me it was more than that but still) that lays the groundwork for more to come while telling a self contained story.

I wonder, and please none of you take any offense to this, but it seems that some of the people that are disappointed or underwhelmed expected this to be what in all likelihood the sequel will be. We are so hyped we want/ need this to be the next "10". Its why someone always says "best film since The Dark Knight" because that is what everyone wants. Hell I felt myself kind of doing that early in my viewing...wondering if I was wrong about the film. Then I remembered this is just the beginning of the story and they kind of dropped us right in meaning we didn't get the easing in through origin to do some of the heavy lifting of world building. Its like Star Wars...we get a few lines of background and then boom there we go!

So my advice to those that are seeing it soon...remember that this isn't The Dark Knight or [insert what you consider a true "10" film is] but is on par with some of the most enduring of the films we have seen in the modern wave of cbms. Actually I think my gf said it best when she said it is like the X-Men films and I would add with the tone of Raimi Spiderman.

Those guys are best friends...you can tell from every interview they do!

I think the criticism from the usual social media suspects is that Superman is not all powerful or unbeatable. From what I know about Tyron and Film Junkie they both loved the Snyder DCEU. This film was not going to be loved by the Injustice fans who want a serious real world take on Superheroes, especially Superman.

Superman reminds me of Matt Reeves (The Batman). It’s a new take on the hero that has never been seen in live action but most people will love the movie.
